Witnesses: ee Connelly Margaret Lewis Wayne Orbison 37 Betty Lou Goodnight 38 CLASS HISTORY We, the Seniors of the 1959 Class of Mount Ulla, go back to the time when we steppedupon the first step of the ladder—that all important step called school. Now although it is a happy time for some anda sad for others, the time has finally come when we must leave our school life behind. Yes, the twelfth step of the ladder has been reached and before we start our careers, we look back into the happy memories of our school days. In the fall of 1947, 19 little pupils were ledinto the first grade to starton the first stepof the ladder. Nine little girls dressed in starched dressesand 10 little mischievous boys dressedin short pants were eager to learn the three basic fundamentals: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Soon, eight steps of education hadbeen completed, leaving only four more. During these years many friendships had been made. In 1955 we began our high school life with a total of 45 pupils, partly of which were from Hurley School. After getting acquainted, we chose as ourleaders: President, Mickey Houck, Vice-President, Russell Connelly; Secretary, Margaret Lewis, and Treasurer, Eddie Teeter, under the leadership of Mr. J. O. Stradley and Mr. Bruce Owens. We were proud of Louise Watson, Neely Houston, Frank Correll, and Frank Coble who made the basketball teams, and Donald Ridenhour, James Meadows, and Ralph Atwell who made the baseball team. The following year we entered the tenth grade as silly sophomores under the direction of Jimmy Blackwelder, our President; and Mrs. David Knox and Mrs. Glenn Daniels, our sponsors. During this year Betty Lou Goodnight, Gary Howell, and Jerry Wise were addedto the basketball teams, while Eddie Teeter, Frank Coble, Clyde Rex, and Wayne Freeze made the baseball team. Brenda Little and Pattie Meadows were elected as cheerleaders. Our Junior Year started out with plenty of work toward our Junior-Senior Banquet under the leader- ship of MissFaye Stewart, our sponsor, andEddie Teeter, our President. We were proud of Margaret Kistler, Betty Lou Goodnight, Sara Graham, Wayne Freeze, and Jerry Wise who became members of the Beta Club.. Six members remained on the basketball teams, five on the baseball team, and two on the cheerleading staff. Yes, finally we have reached the twelfth step of the ladder. Even though we have lost some class- mates, and gained a few during the preceeding years, forty-four students entered the twelfth grade as dignified Seniors.'' Our main projects this year, under the direction of Miss Ina Stevenson, our sponsor, and Eddie Teeter, our President, have been graduationand the publishing of the KEEPSAKE, Six members remained on the basketball teams, five on the baseball team, and two on the cheerleading staff. And now as we prepare to leave Mount Ulla High School, we can truthfully say that al l the steps of the ladder, from the first to the twelfth, have marked many happy memories which will never be forgotten. Neely Houston Historian CLASS PROPHECY A most unusual event occured yesterday. I met an aged and decrepit Hindu who is regarded as a healer. I asked him if it would be possible to see the future of all my classmates. He insisted upon making me some broth with strength in it to make me see the future. As I driftedinto unconsciousness I found myself floating over a modernranch home in Virginia, and whom did I see, none other than PATTIE MEADOWS, now married to a cute Army Sergeant. As I passed on I saw a Dairy Bar owned and operated by FLOYD GRAHAM, My, my, his cows must be doing pretty well. AsI wasleaving, anairplane came over. I wascertain it wouldhit me butI landed on a wing. Good- ness me, that's JAMES MEADOWS, piloting the plane and who is his cute hostess? Why of course, MARGARET PARKER, keeping her passengers entertained by telling her childhood anecdotes. Two of her passengers are RALPH ATWELL and CAROLYN JACKSON, now famous entertainers, going to Mount Ulla on a personal appearance at the big Movie House owned by Mount Ulla's richest man, WAYNE ORBISON, As I sailed through the sky I happened to see the school which has now increased five times in size. Maybe I can float through a window and see what is going on inside. Well, my stars, there's WAYNE FREEZE, now principal of the school. I might as well goon down the hall, there's JERRY WISE and PATSY SUMMITT. Jerry is the science professor and Patsy is the new commercial teacher. I look through the auditorium window, and I see SARA GRAHAM, who is a missionary, and her husband, telling of their adventures in Dark Africa. Hey, what's all that commotion? Think I'll investigate. Oh here it is, why it's just the Mount Ulla basketball teams practicing. There is GARY HOWELL boys' coach and NEELY HOUSTON, girls! coach. As I look down the floor I see DONALD RIDENHOUR, who is head baseball coach. He always was a good player. Help, listen to that screaming. Oh, my, it's juss MARY LOWRANCE, trying to teach her music pupils the scales. As I float over the city of Mout Ulla, I see an exclusive dress shop owned by MARY AGNES BROWN, MARIE FREELAND and JO ANN SAFRIT, I think I'll look around. Gee whiz, look at that mink coat mod- eled by SHIRLEY WEAVER and ther e's JUDY REX, head sales manager. I thought her experience would take her places. A signon thisoffice door says, Styles by Betty, I'll just peak inside. Well, well, there's BETTY RANEY, fashion designer, talking to her assistant RUBY SHOAF. I suppose their Senior Superla- tives meant well for them. I began again to float into space. I see through the window of a building, EDWARD CORRIHER, town mayor, and his secretary, IRENE ALEXANDER. Why is she hovering so near? I never knew she was hard of hearing. Look at that sign on that door, RUSSELL CONNELLY; Attorney at Law. Let me gaze inside, willikers, there's SYLVIA WAGGONER, his bookkeeper, I see she is putting her school studies to practi- cal use. Look at that neat garage down there and whois that man under the hood? Why it's JIM CORRIHER. Wonder whose car he's working on? As I stop to chat, I learn that JIMMY BLACKWELDER has married and moved to Florida where he owns a huge orange grove and a race track where CLYDE REX and GROVER SLOOP are steady winners. I also hear that FRANK COBLE and FRANK CORRELL own a successful farm from which products goto all parts of the world. I find that MARGARET LEWIS is writing poetry for 'The Poetry Review in New York and BETTY GOODNIGHT has published a book on How To Get Along With Boys for Girls Under 16.'' My what a big world! How the time does fly, guess I'd better move on. Oh there is DORIS SIDES, who is still happily married, with her husband, And here comes RACHEL CARPENTER, who has just married a rich engineer from Tennessee. As I float over the hospital, I see MARGARET KISTLER, head nurse of the staff talking to SYLVIA LOWRANCE, a noted beautician and LOUISE WATSON, now married and the proud possessor of red-haired, freckled faced twin boys. Well I really must be floating on. What's that on that billboard advertisement, ''Teeter's Chain of Food Markets, and I see that EDDIE TEETER is President and RICHARD CONNELLY is Store Manager. What a team! Look who is behindthat billboardon motorcycles, LOREN EDWARDS and TERRY SEAMON, now on the Mount Ulla Police Force.
