Mascots Linda Barger Tommy McLaughlin Our Rise to Stardom CLASS HISTORY Approximately twelve years ago, about half of our present senior class was brought into the first grade here at Mt. Ulla and placed in a chair around a table. There we spent nine months drawing, coloring, and getting used to going to school. Down at Hurley the other half of our class was starting out on their long, mischievious, fun-filled, as well as educational journey. Well, time passed, as time does, and we moved along growing mentally as well as which stand out most in my mind, however, are the physically. The events of these years recesses we had. Our class has always been very athletic and we had some very wonder- ful times playing ball every recess, not to men- tion the grand arguments that we used to have. Sometimes we became so engrossed in the arguments that we forgot about the game. Thank goodness we finally entered the grow- ing-up period about the seventh grade. This period lasted a good three or four years. In fact, many of us are still growing up. During this time, each of us started acting silly, some got inferiorty complexes, and some got all mixed up, but we finally got better adjusted about the time we hit the ninth grade. At this time the other half of our class joined us from Hurley, and after a few weeks of getting acquainted we decided they would make a pret- ty nice addition to our class. We got under- way with Mr. D. N. Jeffers as our advisor and Edwin Owens as class president and al- though at first we missed our recesses ter- ribly we soon accepted high school as being pretty good. We were all very proud when four of our classmates got on the basketball team and one became a cheerleader. During our sophomore year we had thirteen members of our class on the basketball team and two on the cheerleading staff. Annie Lee Greene was our class president. Our Junior year turned out to be lots of fun as well aS work. (We had to scrape up enough money to give a Junior- Senior Prom somehow.) Marilyn Boyd was class president and Mrs. Bill Johnston patiently led us through a Junior play and escorted us successfully through the prom. We had eleven ballplayers and two cheerleaders. Two other things that occurred during that year of which we are very proud is that fourteen members of our class were inducted into the Beta Club and Becky Starling won a trip to New York with an essay on world peace. August, 1954, we came back to school as Seniors, although we didn’t feel any different. Soon we were back in the swing of things and trying desperately to prepare ourselves for graduation. Becky Starling was elected class president and Miss Ina Stevenson was our advisor. After a long wait we finally received our class rings and for several days we were very conscious of our fingers. We had ten mem- bers on the ball teams and two cheerleaders. After much work as well a lots of fun, we finally reached our goal with many fond memories of the past years. Our Roles of Comorrow Time: May 24, 1965. Scene: Me floating on my little white cloud. Reason for such conditions: Died waiting for the 3:00 bell to ring. St. Peter has opened up the portals today and thus allowing me to go out and see what has happened to the Seniors of 1955. | really don’t know where to begin. | suppose | may as well go back to Mt. Ulla and start there, Whee! This cloud can certainly fly. Here | am at Mt. Ulla already. The town has grown con- siderably since | was here. That building down there looks interesting—Hmmm! “Liperex Freck- leless Freckle Cream.” Well, so Myra Lipe and Red Red have finally produced a concoction to get rid of freckles. From the looks of things, they’re certainly prospering. This cloud is going too fast for me to see everything. That sign there said Waller’s Style School. I’m going to peek in the window and see what is there—Well, there is Jo Anne Blackwelder receiving a diploma in dress styl- ing. Professor Delane Waller, her teacher, is a very good one though he believes in cover- ing the subject as little as possible. | think I’ll fly over to the school house and see what | find there. Maybe | can swoop through a window if | can find one large enough—Oh! here we are! Well, this hall looks as it always did—What’s that clipping on the bulletin board? Oh! Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Owens have been chosen as Mr. and Mrs. Universe. Mrs. Owens is the former Jo Carol Graham. This other clipping says that Ronald Rice, now in Alaska, has given up his hopes of selling refrigerators to the Eskimos and is now teach- ing them to play football. Well, | may as well go on down the hall. Here’s the science rooms—Well, | see that Nancy Miller has accomplished her desired goal at last—teaching Chemistry in Mrs. John- stons place after her old-age retirement. Whew! that is enough to leave on! Over there is a new home. Maybe | can see who lives there. My goodness! | see Louise Houston writing Hill-Billy songs for Faye Beav- er to yodel on Gerealine Leazers “Soapy Leazer’s Washed-Up Ranger's” TV program, sponsored by Nathan Fleming’s new washing miracle, Soaper Suds. | think I'll fly over to Happy’s Lake and take a dip. It’s terribly hot. Well, here we are! | wonder what that large crowd is gathered for. | may as well go see. Heaven’s what a sur- prise! There is Faye Lingle. She has become quite famous as the accompanist, for the Mt. Ulla Symphony Orchestra. | suppose all those people want her autograph. There’s Marilyn Boyd sunning herself. | hear that she has gotten so many degrees in nursing that the National Board of Nursing under the chairmanship of Doris Cook, is working like mad to think up some new ones. Heaven’s! time is getting scarce. | better hurry. | think Ill go by Salisbury. Hmmm! This country is certainly building up fast. | won- der what that commotion is down there. | believe | will investigate. Oh! Sheriff Gleen Connelly has just discovered Jimmy Graham’‘s old “Still’—he’s still chasing women. | may as well fly on, that’s nothing new. Oh! what a cute house! | may as well look inside. Dear me! There is Marie Little, now Mrs. Bob Graham, looking very disgusted trying to quieten her two squalling twins, while she talks to Mrs. Roy Roberts, the former Annie Lee Greene, of the “good old days”. | must hurry on for the time is passing swiftly. There’s a nice new park down below but | hardly have time to explore it. Maybe if | lean over a bit further and fly a little lower | can see everything. Oops! | almost fell! There are two familiar faces. Why, | do believe its Patricia Kennerly and Barbara Caudill. | sup- pose they have brought their school children for a picnic on the last day of school. | just heard Barbara say that Judith Brown married a Lutheran missionary and that they are now stationed in Ooo-La-La, Africa. Well, here | am in Salisbury. It’s almost dark so | won’t be able to see much more. That's a new office building over there. There's a light in that office near the top. It seems aw- fully late for it to be office hours. I’m going to look in on this. Well! did you ever! There is Betty Briggs taking shorthand from her boss. | wonder why she is sitting on his knee. | never knew of her being hard of hearing. St. Peter is going to be very angry with me but | simply must see who is getting mar- ried in that church down there. Why! It is Phyllis Winecoff who is now a well-known photographer for Life magazine. | see that she has finally met her long-desired man, Rock Hudson, for they have just become man and Wife. Hark! | hear St. Peter calling so I’d better fly along. Hope | see you All There sometime. Becky Starling Prophetess Finale Whereas we, the Senior Class of Mt. Ulla High School of the year nineteen hundred and fifty-five, are about to leave these familiar grounds where we have spent so many happy and worthwhile hours under the careful guid- ance and instruction of the esteemed faculty, do hereby, being of sound mind and judg- ment, publish this last will and testament. |, Faye Beaver, leave my bus 112 to Jannette Poteat, hoping she can stay in her seat on the bus route. |, Jo Ann Blackwelder, will my bus No. 5 to my little brother, Jimmy, wishing him as many flat tires as | had. |, Marilyn Boyd, will my place as manager of the girls basktball team to anyone who will love them as much as l. |, Betty Briggs, leave my innocent blushes to anyone who can turn red quicker than I. |, Judith Brown, leave my ability to eat all | want and not gain a pound to Betty Faye Childers. |, Barbara Caudill, leave my place in the cafe- teria to my sister Wilma. 1, Glenn Connelly leave my curly hair to Pete Hallyburton. We, Doris Cook, and Jo Carol Graham, leave our ball suits, No.15 and 16, to Carol Turman and Nancy Wise, hoping they will wear it with as much pride as we did. |, Nathan Fleming, leave my ahility to come to school only three periods a day to any- one who is that lucky. We, Jimmy Graham and Edwin Owens will our ability to be the only two boys in the senior class to start and finish school together to anyone who can do the same. |, Annie Lee Greene, will my “big basket- ball shoes” to anyone with feet big enough to fill them. |, Louise Houston, leave my locker No. 65 to Jimmy, hoping he can keep it more in order than | did. |, Patricia Kennerly, will my quietness to my cousin, Toby. |, Geraldine Leazer, leave my bus No. 101 to Johnny Webb in hopes he won’t have as much trouble as | did. |, Faye Lingle, will my cheerleading suit to Doris McBride, hoping she will enjoy using it as much as I. |, Myra Lipe, leave my love for sports, es- pecially basketball, to anyone who enjoys them as much as l. I, Nancy Miller, leave my “great love” for geometry theorems to anyone who may take that subject. |, Marie Little, will my ability to pass geometry without knowing what | am doing to Paul Moose. |, Lawrence Rex, leave my ability to get along with the coach to anyone who has the oppor- tunity. |, Becky Starling, will my ability to mess around in the Chemistry lab without killing myself to anyone who happens to have my misfortune of too much curiosity. |, DeLane Waller, leave my ability to come to school only two periods in the day to any- body who is as fortunate as |. |, Phyllis Winecoff, leave my ability to eat all | want and not gain any weight to anyone that is that fortunate. In conclusion, we want to say, although we are leaving Mt. Ulla, it will always remain a place of cherished memories. We would like to say to our many dear friends, “A fond em- brace, a sad farewell, until we meet again.” Lawyer Ronald Rice Witnesses: Geraldine Leazer Betty Briggs Faye Beaver Class Poem ODE TO MT. ULLA HIGH It is with thee, dear Mt. Ulla High Our fondest thoughts and memories lie. Although we may wander away from thy doors, We will still think of thee from far distant shores. Not only of joyous days will we think of in time, But of classmates and teachers who were always so kind. Their encouragement and guidance from day to day Have been so helpful along the way. And now our high school journey is almost complete, An album of joyful deeds with triumph replete. May all the entries we have made on this scroll Be more than history, in truth an honor roll. Nancy Miller Poet Class Song MT. ULLA, FOREVER (Tune, Forever and Forever) Mt. Ulla, we love you, We'll always be true. Dear friends and teachers, We think of you. Although we are parting, Although we'll be far, We'll always think of you Whether near or far. Our memories will linger forever, They will remain fond and true. To parents so dear who have always been near, Our praise and gratitude to you. Dear Mt. Ulla High School, We bid you adieu. We'll never forget you Whatever we do. Although we are parting, Although we'll be far, Your thoughts and memories Will always be in our hearts.
