1 9 The Keepsake 44 Dear Miss Bost: You remember for the past few years, I have been a member of your English class. I never was very good at writing poetry but I got down to work and dashed CLASS POEM Mount Ulla High School Mount Ulla, North Carolina February, 1944 off a few lines. Here is the sample. As we leave our dear Mount Ulla school, We hope we have learned the Golden Rule. With many thoughts of our teachers in mind, May they never be left behind. As we journey o’er our onward ways, Leaving the joys of our wonderful school days, We wish to express our thankfulness to you Our dear friends so kind and true. So at last it is time to say farewell To the school we have known so well. And now we lift our voices high Not to say farewell but just good-bye. - Yours sincerely, MARY ANNA CALDWELL, Poet. CLASS SONG We'll remember Mount Ulla As we go to face our life. We'll remember Mount Ulla as we go through all our strife. We'll remember Mount Ulla our friends and teachers too. We'll remember our adventures as we do Mount Ulla School. Farewell to thee Mount Ulla High, Our hearts will always dwell among the past. Soon school days end And then say adieu, until we meet again. 19 The Keepsake S PA RS itss Mt. Ulla High School Mt. Ulla, North Carolina February, 1944 Dear Miss Bowles: Since you were our mathematics teacher, it seems that you would be interested in the Statistics of the 1944 senior class, so I will relate them to you. With the teachings all of the teachers have given us, I know we all have good mental foundation and when I looked at the Statistics I found that we averaged a good physical foundation. Our shoe size averaging 7¥2. The girls sporting a 6% and the boys an 82. Of course the girls in the class aren't geometric figures but some rank high as far as figures go. Their height varies from 5’ to 5’7¥2 ’ and their weight from 80 to 135 lbs. The boys are rather outstanding too. Their weight averages 149 lbs. and their height 5'9”. At first glance you can see that brown hair is predominant but I must not fail to mention the blondes, sandies and reds who have attracted so much attention from the opposite sex and stirred up rivalry among themselves. Naturally the boys seem to be looking into the future more than the girls. Most of them want to be pilots and their favorite subject in school is Physical Education. You see they are preparing themselves to pass their physical examination, while the greater portion of the girls want to be nurses but have chosen typing as their favor- ite subject. It doesn't sound logical, does it? You can see from the foregoing paragraph that pilots are rather popular; so is the Army Air Corps Song which was chosen, though love songs were the favorites of some of the seniors who seem to think they are in love. As usual the Democrats outnumber the Republicans but it is unusual to find someone who is neither. Perhaps he will belong to either party instead of neither. Our Statistics show that our class is composed of various religious denomina- tions—fifteen Lutherans, thirteen Presbyterians, twelve Methodists and three Baptists. Our class, being very intelligent and hard working, is graduating after only four years in high school with the exception of five pupils, who just loved those stories in their English books so much, they wanted to hear them over and over. Of course, we all liked English which was indicated by the selection of Miss Bost as our favorite teacher. Although the votes for the western and air corps movies were numerous, the most votes were for a real war and romantic movie, which was ‘So Proudly We Hail.” According to the Statistics the girls and boys have chosen Betty Grable and Greer Garson as their favorite movie stars, with Bob Hope and John Mack Brown thrown in to furnish entertainment. Our taste for radio programs varies greatly. It can be divided into two parts, musical and feature. The musical programs vary from “The Grand Ole Opera” to “The New York Philharmonic’’ and the feature programs vary from The Lone Ranger’ to “Blondie and Dagwood.” ‘The Lux Theatre’ was chosen the favorite radio program of the class. I found that the majority of the seniors have blue eyes and have chosen blue as their favorite color. Most of the seniors consider the Junior-Senior Ball and Graduation the most outstanding events of this year. Now, I have come to the place when there aren't any more Statistics to relate to you. My only hope is that this letter will bring back to your mind pleasant thoughts and lingering memories of this bright and happy senior class. Sincerely yours, CAROL ERWIN, Statistician. 44

19 The Keepsake PROPHECY Saint Luke’s Hospital New York, N. Y. May 15, 1954 Dear Miss Carpenter: Can you realize that we have been out of school for ten years today? I just can't realize so much has happened, and I thought you might be interested in know- ing just what has happened to all our class of ‘44. But first I want to congratulate you on your promotion as head of the French Department at Yale University. It certainly is wonderful although I’m not surprised. As you have probably heard, I am head Dietitian at Saint Luke’s Hospital here in New York. Today I was called in for a consultation with the new Chief-of-Staff, Dr. James Beeker, better known to us as Jimmie. To my utter amazement his able assistant is Thetis Briggs. They had just arrived from the dear “Old Sunny South,” and we decided to have dinner at the Stork Club” and talk over old school days. Thetis told“us right off the bat that Elsie Kerr and Virginia Shoaf were married as soon as they finished business school and now each have four adorable girls. Margaret Oliphant, who eloped graduation night, is now with her husband in Florida where they have several large orange groves. Jimmie was simply shocked when I told him that as soon as Carmon Horton and Glenn Hoffner finished their Agriculture course at N. C. State College, they left for South America with their brides to take over a large rubber plantation left them by a wealthy uncle. Jimmie next told us some exciting news about Willie Corriher; she is now a Medical Missionary in Africa where she is doing wonderful-work partly due to the shining beauty of her red hair. ¢ ' . Louise Craven, our talented: Musician, is now taking the place of San-Antonio Rose, former star singer of ‘Pee Wee King,” and I hear she’ will soon marry Ernest Tubb, the real hit singer of the Grand Old Opera. He also told us of his meeting with Sarah Blackwelder who is now known as the second Madame Curie, a world- famous Technician on Cancer. I, having seen Harold Miller a few days earlier for a short while, was able to post them on the twins. Howard, who was one of the heros of the second world war, is now piloting a round-the-world passenger plane, with Carol Erwin as his stewardess. Harold, who was also a flying ace, decided to remain in the Air Corps, where he is now Commanding Officer of ‘Miller Field,’ Mount Ulla, N. C. Sarah Lackey has opened a Retreat for disabled World War II Veterans and has Ruby Wells as her private secretary with Evelyn Bradshaw as Superintendent of Nurses. With Evelyn's winning smile and Ruby's efficient hands, Sarah is making money. Homer McDaniel whose ambition was to be a “Hell-driver,” has finally settled down and became a well known farmer. If you remember well, he often got out of Study Hall that he might spend extra hours with Mr. Truesdale learning how to farm more scientifically. After relating many interesting tales of school we looked up and whom should we see but Andrew Goodnight who left before school closed to join the Navy. He is now an Admiral. We invited him to join our party. Andrew was able to give us some up-to-the-minute data on some of our classmates. He had recently been to a Rose Bow! football game and to his surprise Albert Weast was coach of the winning team—Davidson College. He also told us that Leon Owen, who had become a Veteri- narian, had found the cause of the disease that was causing the death of so many cows and horses, thereby gaining great renown. 44
