1 9 ohes Keepsake 44 CLASS HISTORY Mt. Ulla High School Mt. Ulla, North Carolina Sometime in ‘44 Dear Mr. Deal: If you remember a year or so ago, I occupied one of the seats in your class. And so you know I never could keep those dates and explorers straight. I hope that these figures, dates, leaders, and presidents are exact this time. I want you to read another one of my history papers. In the month of August 1940, 53 happy Freshmen began their climb upward. It was a grand and glorious feeling to be in High School. Little Howard Miller was still in knee pants and Catherine Knox was still wearing “pigtails.” We were very important (in our own estimation). We were divided into two groups under the lead- erships of Mr. William Norris and Mr. Lawrence Pittman. The most outstanding event of the year was the play, Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow, which we presented. By the end of the year we were adjusted to the new world we had stepped into—High School. Under the leadership of Miss Pauline Everhardt and Mr. Hugh White, we were climbing upward toward our goal. A great honor was bestowed upon six of our classmates, the acceptance into the National Beta Club. These happy students were Mary Anna Caldwell, Nancy Hall, Carol Erwin, Catherine Knox, Calvin Barringer, and Sarah Jewett. Our activities were numerous that year. Juniors! Swiftly we are approaching our goal. This year we are proud to have as our leaders Mrs. Dave Graham (formerly Miss Pauline Everhardt) and Miss Mary Bost. We had the honor of presenting the King and Queen contest for which the proceeds went to sponsor the Junior-Senior Party. Margaret Oliphant and Frances Davis, two more of our classmates, were accepted into the Beta Club. Now our glorious days are near an end. We have reached our goal witn great success due to the splendid leadership of our teachers. Somewnere along the way we lost ten of our members. We are for the first time undivided and under the guid- ance of Miss Helen Carpenter. Carol Erwin was elected class president. On January - 29, 1944, we sponsored a Defense Stamp and War Bond Auction. We were amazed at the results. We sold $2,000 of bonds and stamps. Andrew Goodnight, one of our classmates, had to leave us to take up his duties in the U. S. Navy. We were sorry that Mary Lou McConnell was unable to finish with us due to illness. Our days have drawn to a close, twilight is falling now, but a bright sun awaits all of us. We know not what paths we shall travel in the future years but it is our earnest desire that each one of us may be able to congratulate each other on his or her success. Sincerely, SARAH JEWETT, Historian.
