♦4S : ADVERTISEMENTS 1912 {Continued from page 113 ) “Theodore Dossenbach’s nine piece orchestra— with chimes” furnished delightful music for the dancers, who applauded its strains with enthusiasm and indulged in the most daring of the new waltz steps. WEST HIGH’S DEBATE TEAMS CONQUER. Boys’ team wins from Lafayette High and downs East by a unanimous vote to retain Amherst cup. West High may be well proud of her orators when such words April are blazoned across newspaper pages as 4 . appeared today. Our Apollonis Dem- mosthenes with true filial piety are extend¬ ing their efforts to win laurels with which to crown the brow of their Alma Mater. Moreover, our girls neatly lifted the Delta Phi Cup from East on the question “Resolved: that it is for the best interest of New York State that the fran¬ chise be extended to women on the same terms on which it is now exercised by men.” r 9 x 3 PRACTICAL PHYSICS COURSE OCCUPIES LABORATORY IN BASEMENT OF WEST HIGH SCHOOL. Educators have come to realize that the present system of defined courses makes no January provision for those who do not contemplate 12 some certain profession. There is, probably, no man alive who will not find a use for a certain amount of practical physics in tinkering around his home. On the other hand there are not so many who will make use of abstract technical knowledge in their future life work. Taking all this into consideration, an experiment is in the process of being tried here at West. A laboratory has been fitted out in the basement and in it a course in “practical physics” is being administered. So far the boys in the course have wired the shop for electricity, installed pipes and fittings for gas and com¬ pressed air, mounted a gas engine on a concrete block, built a dynamo, and installed a steam engine. WEST HIGH DANCES AT JUNIOR PROM IN SIBLEY HALL. One of the most awaited for and thrilling functions of the year took place last evening when the West High School Junior Prom January was held at Sibley Hall. It was pleasing to 18 see the dignity and decorum which prevailed throughout the evening. The credit for this charm deservedly goes to Miss Katherine Wetmore, faculty dancing advisor, who, previous to the ball, de¬ creed that there would be none of the popular Bostons, Tangoes, one-steps, or dips at any more West High dances. It was also due to Miss Wetmore’s efforts that smoking in the foyer during intermission waseliminated. The dance was held from eight-thirty to twelve o’clock.
