SECOND ROW-C. Kerschner, W. Munroe, B. Betz. 9 The theme of the Vaquero this year is There's No Business Like Show Busi- ness. In a well-known song by the same title we find the lyrics they smile when they are low. This phrase may Well de- scribe this year's Vaquero staff. Al- though they encountered many difficul- ties, they always managed to emerge suc- cessful. The staff would like to congratulate the Class of 1959 and hope that they too emerge successful in all they do. Mary Alderman, Editor-in-Chief. fl f The purpose of a yearbook dedication is to honor someone for some outstanding deed he has done. This choice became exceedingly difficult for this year's grad- uating class. The difficulty arose because we owe our successful school life to so many Wonderful people. Without the guiding hands of our parents our grad- uation would not have been possible. Neither can we overlook the helpful ad- vice and sincere trust of our teachers. For these reasons and many more, the Class of 1959 is most privileged to dedi- cate this yearbook to their parents and teachers. - . , 1 1 A . L . I . I I II I , . I I I I . . .. s . . NZB? is - ies, Behind the scene honors go to the Board of Education. This group directs the functions of our schools and keeps the show running smoothly. The board mem- bers are elected by the voters of West Reading, and they give their time and talents to improve the standards of our schools. Let the School Board take a bow for its limitless devotion and endless efforts. Salute this borough-elect group of out- standing citizens for a job well done. .W SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL For your clever theme and the interesting style in which the 1959 VAQUERO was developed, the staff is deserving of that extra bow so familiar to show business. It is especially appropriate that this theme in- volves the entire gamut of human emotions so typical of the adult world you are entering. Two aspects of the book will most assuredly serve to make your life richer and fuller - music and a sense of humor. Without the timeworn Song in your Heart and Smile be your Umbrella, your achieve- ments will indeed be dull. Melody and a merry heart are basic ingredients for the symphony of ife. As you refresh memories of high school days each time you scan these pages, the true value of teachers and classmates will become increasingly significant. May this reminiscence serve to lift you upward. I hope your future brings praise from the critics and good health from the Creator. Act well your part, there all the honor lies. A. Himmelberger. fan: Ii Z! 1959 Congratulations to the VAQUERO Staff on the publication of a yearbook which so well repre- sents the activities of the West Reading High School and the personalities of the Class of 1959. Many thanks, too, to Miss Stoudt, for her dedica- tion to the job she did so efficiently in directing your activities. You have recorded in these pages memories, scenes and events of many happy days in West Reading High School. Thirty-three strong, you join the long list of graduates who have carried with them the bonds of friendship made here. Continue these with both teachers and class- mates. The lesson of knowing yourself and being true to yourself is one great purpose of education. The attribute of human dignity is hard won and with difficulty retained. If your high school course has not created in you as an individual this guid- ing philosophy, it has in a large measure failed. just as you continually strived for higher scholarship, so pursue the new experiences in life as they present themselves. ' Best wishes from myself and the faculty for your successes in future endeavors. C. 1. Stauffer. Mr. Arthur B. KNEELING-B. Betz. STANDING-def We take great pride in introducing the stars of our production, the Senior Class of West Reading High School. Small but mighty , these seniors have worked hard and diligently to be grad- uating as the class of '59, Many personalities comprise the sen- ior class, each being a specific individual. f WT. ' .y W JM it fu' .im t to rightl: 1. Walker, C. Wentworth, R. Scalese. Nevertheless, the seniors are a hard- working group when they work together. That is why they made their class pro- jects so successful. We wish the seniors the best enova- tion as they embark on their separate careers and surely wish them, each one, the best roles that life has to offer. The Juniors' project for making money was in the form of a dance called Harvest Moon which was the first dance of the year. The Juniors worked together as a group and be- cause of this teamwork they developed a dif- ferent and exciting dance that was very suc- cessful. The high-stepping Juniors had their pres- ence felt in the boys' sports of football, basket- ball, swimming, track, and baseball, while the girls added a lot of spirit in the sports of hock- ey, basketball, and cheering. They were also well represented in every activity offered. In the spring the eleventh grade class trip took them to Washington, D. C., where they toured the grounds of the Capitol. Miss Mabel Fritz and Mr. Alexander Camp- bell, the Junior class advisors, gave their guid- ance helpfully and willingly. The Juniors are greatly indebted to them for their good work. This year Student Coun- cil, the directors of the year's productions, proved very active during the school months. Members of Council are elected by their homerooms at the end of each school year. Among the many pro- jects led by student council were the sale of Christmas cards, a dance, sale of sweatshirts, sale of booster badges, and the initiation of Student Day. Council renewed l a s t year's activities of Per- sonality of the Month , pep rallies, the suggestion box, check room for coats at the basketball games, color day, and selling decals. Because the new sched- ule eliminated the activity period, Student Council met every other Tuesday at noon. Their capable ad- visors were Mr. William Dowling, Mrs. Marjorie Henne, and Mr. Alexander Campbell. 40 Personality of the month STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE These vigorous lads and lassies held the highest roles offered at West Reading High. Under the leadership of Edward Kuhn these top five represented ninth through twelfth grades. They alone decided many wise moves taken in the 1958-59 season meetings for this group, which were held bi-weekly. A County Student Coun- cil Convention, held at Brandywine Heights, was attended by the entire ex' ecutive committee with Mrs. Marjorie Henne. A State Convention which was held at New Kensington, was attended by Ruth Kissinger and George Balmer. Membership in the Na- tional Honor Society in the Senior High School and the National Honor Society in the Junior High School con- fers distinction on those students who are outstand- ing in scholarship, leader- ship, service, and character. Since the groups are small most of the activities are carried on jointly. In our school National 42 Honor Society is not pri- marily a service organiza- tion, but students attain membership because of their outstanding service in various areas. Among the group's activities in the past have been sport hops, formal dances, assembly programs, Holy Week de- votions, and a party at the year's end in honor of sen- ior members. manibou. The monitors are found in the hallsg their main purposes are directing hall traffic and keeping the noise to a minimum. This past year the moni- tors held monthly meet- ings to discuss the prob- lems that they faced on their posts and tried to solve these problems. A new monitor post was add- ed to help solve some of y the hall congestion, also at the end of every quarter monitor posts were changed. This group was advised by Mrs. Mary Gresh and Miss Mabel Fritz. At the end of the year a picnic was held by the monitors. FIRST ROW-Cleft to righrlz I. Kapelski, B. Gajewski, I. Bohn, K. Our li- brarian, Mrs. Mary Ann Lash, with the aid of the members of the Library Club, keeps our library up to date in news and meth- ods. This busy club is composed of members from seventh to twelfth grades. These students meet on two different days, Tuesday and Wed- .1 nesday. They are also in charge of the library situ- ated in the elementary building. During Book Week they are busy as beavers decor- ating so it is pleasant to work there. Christmas time also finds a lovely decorative atmos- phere about the library. Students take care of the bulletin board. They also enjoy covered dish socials throughout the year. Six outgoing seniors will be leaving the scene this year: the co-captains, Ioan Rossi Bonnie Betz, Barbara Wills, and Carol Bohn.
