The 1987 King was Tom Nottleman and Queen Cathy Linnenbrink. They were crowned by Mike Haase and Jenny Arensberg. Each class tried to pickup spirit by dress- ing up to their own theme. The teachers got involved by putting on a pep rally for the stu- dents. The week began with the win over Oak- land in volleyball. The activities night was full of excitement along with the bonfire. The win over rated Elkhorn Mt. Micheal boosted the spirits. Stanton Sounds provided the music for the dance on Saturday. The seniors were victorious in the run for the spirit stick. Mr. Carmody added a special attraction, as the guest speaker. He reflected on the Good Ole-Days at WPHS. The late hours and hard work by the juniors had finally paid-off. The meal was catered by Double K. The at- titude and behavior of the students was excellent. Music was provided by the Jacks !! They made the evening end on a good note. The Cadets were faced with troubles early in the season due to injuries and inexperience. Af- ter a slow start through the first three games the Cadets rolled over Wayne and Oakland. Oak- land was then rated fourth in C-2. The following week they upset Mount Michael, the eighth rated team in Class B. From that game on West Point earned the East Flusker Co-Champion position while also reaching the Class B State Playoffs. West Point had nine players earn All-Conference honors. First team members include Tom Nottlemann, Russ Rasmus, Dan Smith, Troy Streeter, Johnny Arensberg, and Eric Ruppert. Sec- ond team honors went to Mark Wooldrik, David Erb, and Todd Bell. Junior Varsity record was 5-1 and the Freshmen ended the sea- son at 3-1-1. The highlight of the early part of the season was beating rated Oakland-Craig and WPCC for a first place finish in the holiday tournament. The Cadets went into a tailspin in conference play losing many one or two point ballgames. Their hopes were revived in a final season win over highly ranked Elkorn-, but the miracle finish of last year in districts could not be matched as the Cadets lost to Wayne. Basketball 39 6t Ca, ttte State Although the girl’s basketball season was plagued with many in- juries. the Lady Cadets pulled to- gether and had another great sea- son. A new scoring record was set with 79 points. Also a record for the most wins in a season was set. The record was 19-3. The Lady Cadets had many high points in the season. They earned their 3rd straight championship in the Holiday Tour- ney. They also pulled out a first time ever conference champion- ship. The Cadets finished with a 6-4 dual record and were 5-3 in the conference losing to Tek- amah-Herman. Logan View and Pender who all placed in the top 10 in the State C Tournment. West Point had a lot of young wrestlers on var- sity who were good enough to give the team strength in duals. However, they lacked the upperclassmen to lead in tournaments. In addi- tion. they were plagued with injuries all season and never did have a meet with the best wrest- lers competing all at the same time. Next year the young team will be more mature and expe- rienced and hopefully in better health physi- cally. This season marked the end of Coach Boots tenure as head coach as he turned the duties over to the younger coaches after 20 years. He came here in 1974 with 6 years expe rience from Ft. Pierre, S. D. At West Point hi coached 21 state place winners including 8 state champions. The Cadets soon came storming on to become Champions of the Logan View, West Point, and North Bend invites. West Point also earned the Championships of the East Husker Conference track meet and the B-4 District track meet. The thinclads placed in two events at the State Meet. David Erb placed fifth in the Triple Jump and the 4x100 meter relay team placed sec- ond. The members of that team were David Erb, Dave Senden, Russ Rasmus, and Steve Nitzsche. Several school records were set by the boys team this year. Steve Nitzsche set the 100 meter record at 11.0. The state runner-up 4x100 relay team set the relay mark at 44.0 and the 1600 meter relay team of Erb, Tim Huen, Andy Black, and Senden set that relay mark at 3.28.7. The game was in a deadlock at the half. In the second half, however, the Cadets put togeth- er a fourth quarter drive that led them to a 15-7 victory. West Point was then headed to the quarterfinals. A good Lincoln Pius team came to West Point for the quarterfinals. The Cadets played the Thunderbolts tough throughout the game. This was a very successful year for the FFA. The year began with the FFA soil evaluation contest. Our chapter placed second in districts and seventh in the state competition. All members steadily improved throughout the Speech Team season. The team had many excellent performances during the year at district meets. They had taken 3rd at the North Bend Invita- tional and 4th in their Conference tourna- ment. Cinda Schmechel repeated her goal again this year by attending State in her Original Public Address. She was the only team member who qualified for State this year. She addressed her speech on water contamination and the possible solutions. This comedy was about a group of people living together in a house. The play centered around a lady, Mindi Petersen who moved in with her friend. Lynn Buse because she had a fight with her husband, Steve Nitzsche. The lady in charge of the house, Angi Peterson was in a ruckus because she couldn't tell the differ- ence between Tina Reckers sister Shelly Baczwaski and the inspector Andrea Twedt. Sheila, played by Cinda Schme- chel, thought she was the greatest ac- tress in the world. She thought she could transform herself into anything she wanted, including the living room sofa. The group performed for the public at the Elementry school. Then they took their performance to Con- ference at Scribner where they got third place. Cinda got the Best Ac- tress award and P.J. The choir sang and finally the diplomas were handed out. A few tears and hugs were shared for it was the last time the 1988 graduates would be all together.
