Not only losing, but the injury of their top scorer, Gail UJordekemper. That didn't stop the Lady Cadets. Going into districts they were 17-2. only losing to Sloir and Scribner. They suffered a terrible loss to lakeview in the first round of districts. Sports Support Cadets Fall Short of Dream Rfter the Cadets won the dis- trict tournament they headed to Lincoln to ploy in the state bas- ketball tournament. In the first round of the state tournament the Cadets met the Holdredge Dusters. The Cadets fell behind late in the second quarter and were down at halftime. Rt the end of the third quarter the Ca- dets fell to a 17 point deficit. Then they started one of their patented fourth quarter come- backs. Their scrappy defense pulled them to within one point with 30 seconds left, fl last sec- ond desperation shot rattled the rim, but would not foil in. Their next performance will be down in Florida with the rest of the band members. This should be a very fun and learning experience. This year's major- ette was Jodene Karloff. Sila. “This year's VICR chapter ujos the best ever!’’ Those are the words that Mr. Vender Weil used to de- scribe the 1986-87 chapter. In many ways this description was right on. Membership in the VICR club increased from 8 mem- bers to 25. This was mainly due to Mr. VanderWeil's and the officers' efforts in the membership drives. Activities of this year’s club were Jr. High dances held at various times of the year. Christmas tree pickup. VICR lube and an awards potluck. Rll members participated in the different activities. Three VICR members. Jodi Pous. Tina Recker. and Jason Rief, attended the Region IV Leadership Confer- ence in mid-October. The members attended meetings and participated in activities that increased their leader- ship skill. During April 5-7. members went to the State Conven- tion held in North Platte. The club received trophies for outstanding club growth and 100% membership. Mosilko. Boys and Girls State Cornhusker Boys and Girls State is an effort on the part of the Nebraska American Legion and Amer- ican Legion Auxiliary. It gives the boys and girls that ore chosen an opportu- nity to study the government, to un- derstand it. and to respect it. To be eligible for Boys and Girls State, they must be a U.S. citizen and be a junior in o Nebraska high school. They must be in the upper half of their class, and hove qualities of leader- ship and good character. Boys and Girls State is held June 7-13 at the University of Nebraska city campus. The individuals who ore chosen to attend will return with a wider Knowledge of the government and will be more prepared to live os a Nebraska citizen. They started off the year with par- ades and the State Fair like usual, but they received a chance to go to Florida if they could raise the 36,000 dollars it would take to get there. Hoffman, L. Ruse, W. Wogner, M. Petersen. The 1986-87 swing choir ex- perinced many changes this year. Three new members filled the space for those who were unable to perform. They were Cinda Schmechel for Sarah Daberkow, Stephanie Soenkson for UUendy Osten, and Sean Nutzman for Kelly Savery. They performed for the fall, Christmas, and spring concerts, as well as the annual concert with Central Catholic. They per- formed for the students and faculty the day before Christ- mas vacation. Their traveling this year took them to Conference Clinic at North Bend and District Music contest at UUayne, where they received an excellent rating. MIDDIC: from oil of us to oil of you. Sluing Choir 77 BV€ 8V€ BIRDIC This year's musical uuas “Bye Bye Birdie”. The first meeting uuas held in December uuith auditions fol- lowing. The cast uuas chosen and re- hersals began in Mid-January. Times for rehersals proved to be a prob- lem, because the cast had to work around state basketball. €ven though this threw a monkey wrench in rehersal time the cast came though. Set painting and building, uuhich uuas done by the cast mem- bers, began in March, for the first time in tuuo years the cast performed in front of the grade school kids. €ven though the performance on Saturday night uuas postpond till Monday (due to a blizzard) the cast once more came though. This years musical uuas dedicated to UUendy Osten, by the senior cast members. The order of events con- sisted of many songs having to do with oil kinds of onimols. There were several solos with o couple of group numbers done by the swing choir. The whole show was directed by Miss Nicols. It was a cute ond exciting show. The swing choir colled it short and sweet. The evening was en- joyable. Of course, os in oil love, there ujos a problem. Carol's parents didn't approve of Carol's beau, Jody. In o fight scene between Carol, her mom, and Jody, Carol's mom ujos stabbed ond killed. Jody ujos blamed, found guilty in o trial, and eventually hung. R lot of time ujos spent creating a realistic stabbing ond developing the feelings of each character involved. With the help of many determined bond parents, head dreamers Mr Mrs. Steve Bell, helped raise the money by mid-May. To say that ujos an easy task for the bond and parents would be a lie. Many long hours were spent on soup suppers, selling candy, auctions, corn picking, garage sales, $100 supper, raffles and much more.
