Cadets Dominate East Husker Coaches: Ron Skwarek, Rusty Ruppert, David Hughes, and Rod Pittam. This year's Varsity Football was coached by Rusty Ruppert, who led his team to the third Conference Champion- ship in his seven years of coaching. The two-a-day conditioning practices and hard work finally paid off for the Cadets when they made the state playoffs. The Cadets had a balanced team in all positions. They dominat- ed the Conference with the closest team coming within 28 points. West point filled eight posi- tions on the All Confer- ence team. West Point ended the season with a 10-2 record. The JV's went 4-3, and the Fresh- men were 2-3. 34, Football BELOW: Where's the goal line?” Todd Repschlaeger leans for an extra yard. For the first time in 26 years the Cadets beat Central 78-55 while capturing the holiday tournament championship. After an 11 year absence from the conference tournament finals, the Cadets captured the championship by defeating the Gators of Wisner-Pilger. The Cadets ended the regular season with an 18-1 record, which gave them the number one seed in the districts. After a slow start against Schuyler (60-48) they were matched against conference rival North Bend. The game was a total blow out. The Cadets destroyed the Tigers 80-36. In the finals the Cadets went up against the Wayne Bluedevils. After a valiant comeback attempt, the Cadets fell two points short. The final record of 20-2 and the 4th place ratings were the highest accomplishments ever for a West Point basketball team. 38, Boys Basketball Priebnow, A. Ortmeier, P. Wordekemper, P. Ernesti, K. A young varsity squad, with only three seniors, got off to a slow start. The Cadettes lost their first two games, but that didn't stop them. As the season continued, personal and team goals were accomplished. The Cadettes beat Oakland-Craig two nights in a row and got out of the bunny- bracket and into the first round of conference play. After suffering two close defeats to Blair and So. Sioux, they came back to break the school record J.V. 1st Row: P. Connell, C. Wooldrik, M. Ahrens, K. Liibbe. 2nd Row: J. Schlautman, D. Wegner, K. BOT- TOM RIGHT: Let go of my leg. Kevin Boots tries for an escape. The Cadets completed a successful dual season with a 6-4 record. Tournament wise, it wasn't so good, winning only one trophy, and qualifying only two for state. This was a young team, with only three seniors wrestling varsity, two frosh, and three juniors. The wrestling team should be much improved next year. The sophomores, R. Schuetze and K. Boots, had a combined record of 37-17. B. Hoffman, a junior, and T. Schroeder, a senior, were the state qualifiers. Three other underclassmen, who were normally not starters, won enough varsity matches to letter, making the prospects look good for the future. Seniors, B. Landholm, with a 21-10 record, and B. Shultz, with a 14-14 record, both had good final seasons, but missed chances of going to state by just a few points. Although no Cadets qualified for state, many individuals had their top performances during the district meet. The team was led by Allen Haase, who for the second year in a row won the conference discus with a throw of 166. Future prospects look good with Jason Kaup breaking the 45 mark in the shot, distance runner Mike Moyer placing well and a good young 400M relay team. With no seniors out and only one junior, the so- phomores and freshman made up the majority of the team. This year, 12 girls made the all time top five in their special event. Three of these were new records. In high jump, Michelle Moyer tied the 14 year old record of 5 0 . Serena Frazier broke the records in both the 1600 m. run and the 800 m. run. Others to make the all time top five were: Jenny Arensberg in shot and discus; Michelle Metzger in shot; Karen Liibbe in the 100 m. dash; Gail Worde- kemper in the 100 m. low hurdles; Kathy Swenson in the 400 m. dash; DeVonna Wegner in the 3200 m. run; and Serena Frazier in the 400 m. dash and the 3200 m. run. This year the team had one state contender, Serena Frazier. She went to run the 1600 m. and the 3200 m. She did exception- ally well, for a freshman, placing 5th in the 1600 m. Coach Carmody was very proud of his team. TOP LEFT: On to State, bud, on to State! Cathy Linnenbrink congratulates Serena Frazier on making State. ABOVE: Oh, no! I'm not suppose to be off the ground! Cadets Make State Playoffs For the first time in the school’s history, the Cadets qualified for the Class B State Playoffs. The Cadets first round opponent was the Wayne Bluedevils. The Cadets trailed 10-0 at half time. In the second half, the Bluedevils made the errors and the Cadets capitalized on them. The Cadets fourth quarter TD and Gonzalo Gomez’s two crucial field goals iced the game. The second round opponents were the Antlers of Elkhorn. With less than two minutes left in the game, WP was trailing by eight points. The Cardiac Cadets once again performed a miracle with a six point victory, 27-21. In the semi-finals against the Gothen- burg Swedes there were no more miracles. Although WP outgained them in total yards, they couldn't come up with the win. The game ended 7-3, one game away from the State Finals. i A. « Honor Athletes Basketball. Second team all confer- ence Beth Saner; First team defense Kristie Herman. Football. Two weeks later, 77 people were at try-outs. Forty-three had parts in the final production. Work on the set began in mid-December. Many hours after school were spent paint- ing the set. An entire Saturday was devoted to putting the set together. Rehearsals started in Feb- ruary, but the cast had to work around basketball and wres- tling. By March, there were rehearsals every night, includ- ing Fridays. The cast had a lot of fun at practices. For example, when the hot box dancers weren't at practice, the male leads filled in for them. The directors and the stage crews had fun trying to keep the extension stage from falling apart during the crapshooter's dance. Performance night finally arrived, and with it came the customary flowers and Ms. Fuller's pep talk. Both of the performances had full houses. After curtain calls on Satur- day night, 10 weeks of hard work had finally come to an end. CAST Nathan Detroit ....... Miss Adelaide ........ Sky Masterson ........ Sgt. Sarah Brown ..... To prepare for football games, the band practiced every morning at 7:45. On February 14, the concert band practiced with Central Catholic dur- ing the day at the high school. They ended the evening with a successful concert. In January, the band, with their new uniforms, was entered in a Best Dressed Band contest.
