Dear Diary: Encouraged by the knowledge that we were doing something for the student body, the members of the Cadet Yearbook Staff worked to produce an excellent annual. Expertly sponsored by Miss Niederhoefer and Mr. Graham, the Cadet yearbook has constantly been a treasured publication. Dear Diary, Although we all look forward to recreational activities, our main purpose in high school is to attain a higher level of education. The achievement tests that were given to every student at WPHS this year were the Iowa Tests of Educational Development. University of Nebraska Regents Exams were given to members in the upper one-third of the senior class for earning scholarships. Aptitude Tests were given to the freshmen and the Algebra Prognostic Tests for placement in algebra or math. Gatby State Employment Tests, given because WPHS was chosen as a pilot school, and State Merit Exams were given to seniors to discover their aptitudes. Mental ability tests were given to freshmen and juniors. These tests tell whether students are able to compete with their fellow classmates. Mr. Arthur, principal, heads the freshman counselling program. In this class he helps the freshmen decide their future plans in regard to their abilities. Throughout the year he also has conferences with the students and their parents. Declam is another educational activity that enables further development of speech. Mr. Alberding works long, tedious hours to help Declam students accomplish their best speaking voices for the local, district, or state contests. During the year we always enjoy the teaching and company of practice teachers. Those who presented their teaching abilities this year were Dick Jones, Dennis Manske, Sandra Huey, Archie Lindsay, and Lowell Zimmer-mann. Participants in Declam were BACK ROW: (L. to R.): R. Hagedorn, D. Hein, J. McDonald, V. Hagedorn, S. Reeson, S. Stratton. FIRST ROW: J. Engelbart, M. Reich, G. Buck, S. Wimmer, E. Daberkow.
