DecUcatio t We would like to dedicate the Cadet to our Mothers and fathers in deep appreciation for helping our four most important years. If it weren’t for you behind us, giving us a helping hand here and discipline there, we would not be the people we are today. Your guidance has helped in the formation of memories which happily end our high school career and make us ready to take that important step forward into the world of tomorrow. The sophomore class this year has the honor of being the largest class in high school with 49 members. Today we went for the first time to our geometry, biology, English 10, and what-not classes. Through the expert cooking of Mrs. Fillmer, Mrs. Tomrdle, and Mrs. Plummer, we are able to enjoy our delicious meals in a warm, friendly, and crowded atmosphere. This year we had the privilege of eating in a room filled with beautiful modern tables and chairs designed in the new pastel colors. Dear Diary, coo i'' cust°dians, and office secretary we had this year, we could not have or enjoy the smooth unning ciency o our school as it is today. We are greatly indebted to these kind people and offer them our many thanks. ° 1 r r Secxetary Shovelling walks, opening up the school, cleaning the halls, and solving many problems the students and teachers may have are just a few of the duties our custodians, Mr. Tony Neeson and Mr. Fred Weineke, perform throughout the year. We do not realize how much these men contribute to the efficient working of our school. Her laugh and smile are familiar . . . Give her a typewriter, a telephone, and a problem; she's content! Let the office become noisy and she's very disturbed. Being the office secretary means real work, and there's plenty that Mrs. McElravy does in the superintendent's office. 15 Dear Diary, Our Girls' Glee musical group provided us with entertainment throughout the year. Dear Diary, Although we all look forward to recreational activities, our main purpose in high school is to attain a higher level of education. The achievement tests that were given to every student at WPHS this year were the Iowa Tests of Educational Development. University of Nebraska Regents Exams were given to members in the upper one-third of the senior class for earning scholarships. Aptitude Tests were given to the freshmen and the Algebra Prognostic Tests for placement in algebra or math. Gatby State Employment Tests, given because WPHS was chosen as a pilot school, and State Merit Exams were given to seniors to discover their aptitudes. Mental ability tests were given to freshmen and juniors. These tests tell whether students are able to compete with their fellow classmates. Mr. Arthur, principal, heads the freshman counselling program. In this class he helps the freshmen decide their future plans in regard to their abilities. Throughout the year he also has conferences with the students and their parents. Declam is another educational activity that enables further development of speech. Mr. Alberding works long, tedious hours to help Declam students accomplish their best speaking voices for the local, district, or state contests. During the year we always enjoy the teaching and company of practice teachers. Those who presented their teaching abilities this year were Dick Jones, Dennis Manske, Sandra Huey, Archie Lindsay, and Lowell Zimmer-mann. Participants in Declam were BACK ROW: (L. to R.): R. BELOW: As we marched down the aisle with diplomas in hand we remembered our motto, In ourselves our future lies. Dear Diary. May 24--We'll always remember this night, for we have at last received our diplomas. For some it was a happy event, but for many others it brought a deep sadness into our hearts when we thought of leaving. After graduation ceremonies we all met at Joyce Soil's home where we laughed, danced, ate, and were all together probably for the last time. For what then will be remembered? Naturally we evidenced many weaknesses--we cannot say that this was the best class ever to be graduated from West Point High--such judgment is beyond our limits. But we have accepted our challenge and exerted a definite drive forward--each in his chosen realm. On the opposite page are pictured the Top 5 in the 1961 graduating class. They are as follows: Leta Weitzenkamp, Joyce Anderson, Diane Dietrich, Alice Schademann, and Jay Reppert. ABOVE: Here forty-seven seniors proudly stand awaiting their turn to receive their diploma. RIGHT: Everyone was in a hurry to turn in their caps and gowns after graduation. When the books close, and the last bell rings. And carefree days are lost to mundane things- - When nostalgia strikes, and your memory wanes. And you remember the faces but not the names-- Pick up your yearbook and leaf it through. And remember the days so dear to you.
