This is the only break in their very busy day. At the Cafeteria One of the most fanuliar scenes at W P H S 1S the cafeterla line The bell rings at noon and everyone makes a mad dash for the lunch line Of course there is no shoving or pushing and very few try to crowd in and get their meal first although it does happen once in a while A member of the faculty is always present at the cafeteria door to collect the lunch money Another very familiar scene is the changing of classes. Notice how anxious everyone is to get to their next class. Nothing but rush! rush! rush! AH' FOOD AT LAST' The cafeteria lS well staffed this year with two new cooks and they have extra help from students The kitchen is modern and well equipped There are folding doors between each of the rooms that can be moved to make one room out of three classrooms Lets Drive Thru the Math Department The math department 15 com posed of a varlety of courses They are general math algebra plane geometry sol1d geometry trlgonometry and advanced algebra The teachers 1n thls depart ment are Mlss Rohrman Mlss Kendrlck and Mrs Kell At the rlght 1S a vlevv of one of Mlss Kendrlck s general math classes They study the fundament als of mathematlcs how to wrlte checks and study percentages Z0 Mrs Kell shows Verle Randolph how to solve an algebra equation Drlvers Educatlon Paul G Johnson of the Paul Iohnson Motor Company hands the key to the drlvers educatlon car to Iohn Batten the drlvers educatlonal lnstructor Every year the Iohnson Motor Company supplles the hlgh school w1th a new Chevrolet for the drlvers educatlon department l 1 . I We find several interesting sections in the science department. Mr. Davis and Mrs. Clark are new at West Plains High this year. Mrs. Clark teaches general science, chemistry, and physics. Mr. Davis also has general science classes and has two biology classes . The science department sponsors an organization for students interested in the many different phases of science. The name of this organiza- tion is the Science Club. At the right is a scene from Mrs. Thombourgh's geography class. They are deeply engrossed in locating some very famous mountain ranges The students in the geography class have several weeks of map study This map study helps them to be better acquainted with the world they live in They also study loca tions weather and moisture Mike Houston Harry Cole and Ioe Bohrer stand a safe distance away while Smitty Smith tries some thing new in the chemistry lab Hope it works' Traveling Through the Science Department Mr Davis is giving his general science class some firsthand in formation on what makes the world go around I wonder if his theory corre sponds with that of the textbook I Z3 Whats Goang on In the Art Department The art II class d1d a number of murals thrs year At the r1ght 1S one of a football game They also made moblles whrch Ilmmy Asberry and Ronald Nale are working on Mrs Anderson the head of the art department offers her students oppor tumttes to develop their skills and talents There are four art I classes and one class for art II students In the art I classes the students learn the beglnning fundamentals of art They study coloring des1gn prospectrve and many other rn terestlng art subjects In art II oil painttng advanced drawtng and crafts are studled At the left IS a scene from one of the art I classes Here they are worklng on lettermg Lettermg proves very useful in thelr later l1fe They use many different srze pen pomts tn makrng posters and stgns of all kinds Many t1mes the various orgamzatrons advertl sing purpo s es Another scene from the art II class Thrs tlme they are dolng o1l pamtmgs These pa1nt1ngs are rather d1ff1cult and requrre qulte a lot of sk1ll and practrce 0 I . I . . - want the students to make posters for 1 1 . . English Gffers Variety There are three years of English that are required. Miss Rohrman, Mrs. Adamson, Mrs. Hogan, Mr. Freel, and Mr. Maddox are the teachers in this department. The English classes have one semester for grammar and one semester for literature. At the right is one of Miss Rohrman's English II classes. This is a shot of another of the English II classes. This is Mr. Maddox's class . Mr. Maddox often adds variety to his classes by talking and reading in German and Spanish when they study different types of literature. Mrs. Hogan's English I is just as happy as they look, for every student in her classes think English grammar is fun. All freshmen are required to take English I, and they have several instructors to choose from. big: AM? ,, Phys. Ed. Stresses Calisthenics Every student in high school is required to take physical education every year . Both the girls' and boys' physical education classes begin their classes by doing calisthenics , which helps limber everyone up. In the boys' classes they spend most of their time playing basketball and softball. Coach Peters is in charge of all the boys' physical education classes . Mrs. Farnham, the girls' physical education instructor, gives the girls a chance to try their skill at several different sports. In cold weather they play basket- ball in the gym, and they spend the Warm days outside playing softball and tennis. In the early fall, the girls go to the swimming pool for a swim. 26 Keep your knees straight girls. Another Trip Through the English Department We find a scene from each of the classes in the English departments. At the left is Mrs. Adamson's soph- omore English class. Like the other English classes, Mrs. Adamson has her classes spend the first semester on English grammar and the last semester literature. Mr. Freel is the instructor for all the junior English classes. He divides his year into three sectionsg grammar, writing, and lit- erature. Now they are studying grammar which is the basis of the other two sections. Mr. Freel personallzes his classes by adding his ovsm knowledge and experiences to that of the text- book. These deadlines can not be met without hard work and close planning. The purpose of the annual is to compile as many of the interesting events which occur throughout the year, as possible, in an interesting way. This is their main objective. The staff does not make the annual for financial purposes. They try to make the book so it will cost the students as little as possible. nk.. This year Ioan Martin was chosen to reign over the Homecoming festivities. At half-time the queen and her attendants drove onto the field in convertibles. While the band played appropriate music, Ioan descended from the car and walked through' an aisle formed by the Pep Club and the Band, to the sidelines where she was crowned Homecoming Queen by Don Thompson. After the crowning the girls and their escorts were seated along the sidelines where they watched the Zizzers defeat Ava. 52 The queen and her attendants view the game. Iean, Ioan, and Priscilla enter the field. QUEEN IOAN ENTERS THE THRONE ROOM Probably the most awaited social event of the school year is the home- coming dance. This year, the dance was held in the gym after the Zizzer- Ava game. The gym was decorated with a fall air by the members of the Pep Club. At one end of the floor was the throne in which the queen and her attendants reign- ed over the dance. Refreshments of cider and doughnuts were served by the members of the Pep Club. Alumni and students alike turned out for the occasion to make one of the largest crowds ever to attend a home coming dance at W P H S In the opinion of everyone this year s dance was one of the nicest ever held and one all of us will long remember The dance This year the Pep Club sponsored the Paul Mitchell Band which played at the Homecoming dance They provided very lovely music for the dancing and put everybody in Just the rlght mood Everybody agreed that the Paul Mitchell Band put the finishing touches to an already perfect evening 153 PRISCILLA RIC HARDS 54 THE QUEEN AND HER ATTENDANTS Football Banquet This year, in reward for their fine per- formances on the gridiron, the Pep Club gave the football team a banquet in the cafeteria. Coach Batten and Coach Heck also presented trophies to the most valuable lineman and the most valuable back These trophies were won by Don Thompson and Iack Cockrum Coach Batten presented letters to the team members The highlight of the dance after the banquet was the crovsming of the football queen The members of the team elected Priscilla Richards a senior for this year s queen She was attended by the two runner ups for the honor lean Lasater and Cynthia Richards The queen was crowned by football captain Don Thompson Following the Coronation the evening was spent in dancing and a good time was had by all The dance . . 1 The queen is crowned Jif- COACH BATTEN, COACH STRATTON MRS.
