HIGH SCI-IO 1 So then, come ye, Seniors, Juniors Come Soph'mores, Freshmen, all, And we'll keep the echoes ringing Through this dear old study hall. Let us own the white of virtue And the green for youth and right As we strive to all be worthy Of the dead' old Green and White. CARAVMI IIIVITES YOU DH A TRIP ALUIIG 'l'I'IE TIIRNPIKE s.. IL I ff? We gathered the things that we did in the past, And to print them we've all been so busy, We've created this book with a highway the theme, And a car known as old Turnpike Tizzy. She travels the road from beginning to end, And stops only briefly at places, Where she shows the town and residents, too, And pictures the prominent faces. Through Sportsville we go in our Hsouped-up old crate Where we see an athlete so true. Then to Activityburg with its many divisions From Key Club to Organ Club, too. Though this is our book in a general sense, It's still not enough to disclose The things which are printed deep down inside, The things that the Caravan knows. Olin Thomas, and a new assistant coach, James Brokenshire. The Rams, in a newer and bigger conference, made an excellent showing throughout the season. With fourteen returning lettermen, the Rams met a strong Scranton Central team on September 19. Although the statistics proved that the Rams outplayed their opponents, Central won 20 e7. Paul La- Nunziata scored our only touchdown. Determined to get on the winning trail, the Rams met West Side Central Catholic and finished victoriously 19 6. Gary Vin- celli made aspectacular touchdown run of sixty yards. Mike Cordora shined on defense as he did throughout the season. The big game of the year was at Old Forge. Although the Rams fought hard throughout the entire contest, they were overcome by the Blue Devilsg and the game ended 35e6. The team met Larksville after a week's layoff and subdued their opponent's attack 27e6. Local fans will remember for quite awhile Sam Capone's interception and gallop of forty-eight yards to paydirt. Bob Cavalari booted three extra points. In our traditional game with Pittston, the Rams romped to a 33Y6 victory. Bob Ferretti, our powerful fullback, scored twice. ight Firs Nunzxatawrerfetti, Left to Tn Patil xg! Rob9YL Boba and Rpm S 9 21 Xncelh . St. John's offered little opposition as the Rams defeated them 51 -13. Bob Ferretti scored three touchdowns. Traveling to Tunkhannock, the Rams had trouble getting started but ended the game victoriously12 6. The winning touch- down was scored on a pass from Wicks to Vincelli. For the annual Thanksgiving Day game, the Rams traveled to Exeter, where they met an inspired Exeter team. Much to our dis- may the Panthers played fine ball g the game ended in a 13 - 13 tie. The folowing are a few statistics con- cerning the team's record during the past year. West Pittston had a total of 1,793 yards gained rushing. Out of 52 attempts, we completed 18 passes for a total of 407 yards compared to 303 yards by the oppo- sition. In first downs, the team far out-. shined their competitors, making 106 to their 55. As usual, our penalty note was high. The Rams were penalized 69 times for a total of 535 yards. ln the important category, scoring, the team tallied 167 points while the opposing teams scored only 106 points. Defeating three of their five new oppo- nents, the team finished the season with a very commendable record of five wins, two losses, and a tie. Al Wicks was honored by being elected captain of the Rams. The senior members wish success to the future teams and hope they may benefit from our mistakes. With the league season rapidly drawing to a close, interest and enthusiasm were steadily mounting. The Rams, under the very able direction of Mr. James T. Atherton, our new coach, had finished in a three-Way tie for the first half of Valley League play and were dead- locked with Exeter for second half honors. At this point a protest lodged against our team was upheld by the PIAA, and fourteen victories which had enabled the squad to achieve its lofty position were forfeited to our opponents. The team served notice that an exciting season was in store by winning five of seven games in exhibition and tournament play, losing only to Nanticoke, eventual Wyoming Valley League champion, and Exeter, defend- ing champion in the Valley League. In the first half of league competition West Pittston won its first five games by de- feating Forty Fort, Northwest, Wyoming, Luzerne, and Pittston. The Rams outplayed Exeter in the next game, only to see victory elude them in the final seconds. They com- pleted the first half on a successful note by turning back Larksville and a highly favored Plains' squad. West Pittston, Exeter, and Plains all posted 9 A1 records to tie for the lead. As the second half got under way our team compiled a skein of four victories, winning over Wyoming, Northwest, Edwardsville, and Exeter. Plains snapped our winning streak in an overtime thriller before another capacity crowd in the West Pittston gymnasium. The Rams resumed their winning ways by defeating Larksville, Pittston, Luzerne, and Forty Fort. When the PIAA's decision was announced, only the victories over Luzerne and Forty Fort remained. This year's varsity featured six seniors: Mike Austin, Joe Miller, Ronnie Rogers, Bill Rutledge, Al Wicks, and Jerry Zezza. The basketball team is assured of a bright future as several experienced underclassmen, including Mike Cefalo, Al Kaminskas, and Leon Obrzut, together with some fine prospects from the jayvee squad will be available next season. 41 c TBM-L COA mes Left to TIQM' Mi lgarold Sex OR VARSITY N AGER5 A BASKETBALL M nw' Rxchgrd ht Wluafd Hince Ventre e Nxtghoiais Gefmle Law! Guided by their new head coach, Mr. Harold Seiple, and assistant coach, Mr. William Brown, the team coped its ninth consecutive District No. 2 P.I.A.A. Championship. In the regularly scheduled meets, the team established a record of three wins and two losses. Davis. After a loss to a well-seasoned Tunkhannock team, the boys went on to defeat Clarks Summit and Wyo- ming. The Wyoming meet, the thriller of the season, went down to the last event before the outcome was decided. Bill Rutledge took first in the 440 and 880 yard runs. Then the mile relay team, composed of Bohan, Todd, Rutledge, and Miller, brought the meet to a successful close. Following an easy victory over West Side Central Catholic, the team met Plymouth, who proved to be a formidable opponent. The boys turned in the best times and distances of the season, and first places were taken by Allan Wicks, Paul LaNunziata, and Joseph Costello. Finally, however, Plymouth managed to edge by with a five point lead. Our next and final meet with Forty Fort was cancelled because of bad weather conditions. On May 15 the team traveled to Scranton to win their fourteenth district championship. Despite the weather, the boys were in top form. Two of the outstanding team members were Joseph Miller, who took first in the mile and 440 yard runs, and Allan Wicks, who placed first in the low hurdles and pole vault and second in the broad jump. By far, the most exciting event was the mile relay, run by Miller, Wills, Bohan, and Rut- ledge. When the final scores were tallied, West Pittston with 71 points was far ahead. All those who placed first or second in their events at the district meet were eligible to participate in the State Meet on the following Saturday. 44 1959 4126 5826 5626 4326 5925 5825 69 49 562? 6122 QL --- XX DAREDEVILS ,, ' 1-l. 'I'l'IE Bl0W -DIITS An Old Grad, Mr. Ronald Houser, returned to West Pittston High School this year to direct the Green and White Marching Band in notes and steps. With some clever innovations in on-the-field marching and half time performance, the band added color and en- joyment to our football games. The Marching Band has also been a feature attraction in local parades and last autumn performed for the State Firemen's Convention in Scranton. At the close of the football season, the spotlight was shifted to the concert bands, which presented for the first time a Winter Con- cert. The bands directed by Mr. Houser, rendered a varied program of classical and modern compositions. Among the pieces played by the Junior Band were March Majestic and Sambilita, a festive Latin American number in a samba tempo. The Senior Band's rendition of several selections from the Broadway hit, Oklahoma, was very warmly received. The Senior and Junior Bands then combined to play five selections, including Little Bop Riding Hood, a novelty number narrated by Allan Wicks. As a rousing finale to an evening of fine band music, the concert bands presented Honor Band, featuring the Majorettes with Carol Bahl as Drum Majorette. Mr. Ronald A. Houser The ofhcers of this year's Senior Concert Band were: Drew Smith, president, Willard Hunter, vice-presidentg John Zarzecki, secretary 5 and Joseph Bohan, treasurer. Both the Marching Band and the Concert Bands have added immeasurably throughout the year to school and community functions. 51 ww Q P' . G! M . Each Wednesday morning our Student Council is busy at work planning the activities of Youth Center for the coming Saturday night. ln addition to supervising Youth Center, the Council has also sponsored three one-act plays presented on April seventeenth for the benefit of the public library. This active organization is composed of homeroom representa- tives from ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. These stu- dents, in turn, elect officers to preside over the council meetings. Tnis year's officers were: Lee Havard, president, William Carver, vice-president, Nancy Weimer, secretaryg James Truelove, treasurerg and Peter Dominic, business manager. The Council works in accordance with an adult advisory board. The members are: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weimer, Mr. John Occhiato, Mrs. Philip Harris, Mr. Jarrett Jennings, Mr. Steryl Serfoss, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jones, and Mr. R. C. Williams Cfaculty adviserj. Many of the Youth Center activities, which are planned by the council, will certainly be remembered as social highlights of the past year. The annual Halloween Hop gave the students a chance to display their originality in costume designing, and a hilarious hula hoop contest certainly delighted everyone. Especially impressive gas the traditional Valentine Dance with Bonnie Jane Jones as ueen.
