The Seniors then decided to launch a rocket of their own With the approval of their adviser, Mr. Brown. We turned the name Caravan around, in fact, And changed it to the NAVARAC. Before the NAVARAC could be fired, A long time of planning had expired. The yearbook staff worked every day To help send this rocket on its way. Boosters, patrons, subscribers, all Faithfully answered to our yearbook's call. The launching is completed now And never to forget it is every senior's vow. Nittel, our high school Concert Band has been doing an excellent job furnishing music for Chapel and other school programs. In former years the band has rendered selections written by European symphonic composers. This year it has turned to American composers and modern musicg for example: Mississippi Suite' by Ferde Grofe, Trumpeters Lullaby by Leroy Anderson, and t'Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. Another recent addition to the activities of the band has been the election of officers. The following seniors were elected this year: Presidentf Sandra Llewellyn. Vice-Presider1taRichard Jones, SecretaryaJanice Clelland, and Treasurer HHarry Henck. For the past several years. the Senior High members of the band have looked forward to the coming of the West Side Band Festival. This festival has been attended by 250 Senior High members of 8 West Side bands. The Concerts have been held in the football fields of the various schools and have been attended by many people. This year, however. the Festival was moved out of danger of the elements and was held in our auditorium. Due to the limited space indoors only 150 select musicians played in the Festival. At the close of school both the Concert and Marching Bands will suffer a great loss as they say farewell to 22 seniors and Mr. Nittel. 357 MR. FREDERICK J. NITTEL COSMIC RAYS HE! Both of the glee clubs presented programs during the Christmas season. The girls presented a pageant narrated by Claire Rindgen and the boys presented a med- ley of carols. ' The Girls' Glee Club is composed of forty-seven seniors and juniors who excel in reading ability, voice quality, and range. Some of the selections which the girls prepared are Fascination, Eternal Life, and The Best Things in Life are Free. vm., . The Boys' Glee Club, composed of thirty-one sophomore, junior, and senior boys, has changed its pace and has turned to light songs and novelty numbers. Since such songs as Polly-Wolly-Doodle, Requiem, and Hi! Ho! Nobody Home require long hours of arduous practice, plus patience and skill, the boys often returned to the school at noon to rehearse. CATHRAN J. FEAR After the concert, the main musical event of the year, both Miss Fear and Mr. Nittel recall the many practices and feel rewarded for a job well done. ENCE CHAMPIO Bl in MAJOR TAR RAMS The West Pittston Rams have once again gone on to win the West Side Conference Championship. Coaches Jack Jones and Olin Thomas led the 1957 Rams to another winning season by their capable graining of nine lettermen and many new team mem- ers. The Rams opened the season against Plymouth High School in an exhibition game. They fumbled twice too often, causing the loss of our first game. The Rams found Edwardsville a determined team, but succeeded in defeating the latter by a score of 33-0. Ned Wicks scored three touchdowns. The Rams traveled to Northwest High School for their first away game and returned with a 37-0 win. Allan Wicks hit paydirt, scoring on an 80 yard punt return, and Donald Chaump recovered a fumble for a touchdown. In this game Dick Galloway broke his jaw to finish his active participation for the year. Again they traveled, this time to Wyoming. After a bad start, the Rams began to move and blanked the former by a score of 33e0. On October 25, Pittston invaded our stadium, but was soon discouraged by three quick touchdowns at the beginning of one of our best games. Our players overpowered Pittston 43e6. Mel Montanye, previously suffering a hand injury, returned to his halfback slot and scored four touch- downs against Dallas in a 67f0 victory. West Pittston then met an inspired Forty-Fort team and defeated them 3447. Ned Wicks and Mike Bianco each had two tallies. In the next game of the season the Rams defeated St. John's 39 0. Mike Bianco rallied the team to its one sided win b scorin three tou h . -' y g c downs. The final score appeared 4730. On Thanksgiving morning a spirited Exeter club met the Rams. In the closing seconds, while all seniors were playing Al Forlenza traveled 80 ards on a , y pass play to end the touchdown parade of our 1957 Rams with a score of 47 6. The team commended Donald Chaump for his contribution to their success by electing him captain. Eugene Bonfanti, Mike Bianco, Donald Chaump, and Ned and Allan Wicks were voted to the All-Star Con- ference team. Mel Montanye received honorable mention on the All-State team. With fine prospects for future years, it looks as if the Rams will have many more successful teams. The Rams will always have our earnest support and best wishes. rl Kenneizn Y SENIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Leftto rzght Mlchael Austln Louls DeGennaro Thomas Martm Allan W1cks Joseph Muller Ronald Rogers Michael Cefalo Robert Endres Ned Wlcks Gerard Zezza Lee Havard West West West West W est West W est W est Plttston Plttston Plttston Plttston Plttston Prttston Plttston I 1ttston West Pxttston West Plttston West Plttston West Pxttston ETEOR Swoy erswlle Nant1colse Tax lor Alumnl VALLEY LEAGUE SCORES First Half Nlorthwest Exeter Edwardsvxlle Pittston Plams W womlng Luzerne Fortx Fort We t Ilttston West I lttston West Pxttston West I xttston West I lttston West I lttsttm West Iltt ton We t ltr um Second Half Fflvs lI'KlNXlll9 Fxeter W xommg, I-ortx Port Luzerne Iltt on I irls x e Northxxe I ' ......... 50 ' . . . . ...,. 52 ' . ....,.... 27 ' ' . . . . . . . .61 ' . ..,.,. . .47 3 ..lr. . ..., 65 ' .,....... 47 '.. . . . . .59 , ' . . ,.,,.. 38 . . .,., . . . 69 ' s .' . . 53 , 'z J . 's 54 METEOR The West Pittston Rams ended their campaign on a victorious note, but their over- all record for the season was on the losing side. Due to inexperience, the Rams were unable to chalk up any victories in the four pre-season games. However, these games provided val- uable experience for the teams and enabled them to go on to victory later during the season. The first two games of the regular season were unsuccessful. The boys put up a game fight, but the experience of the seasoned North- west and Exeter teams proved too much for the Rams. Continuing into the season, the Rams fared better and conquered Edwardsville and Larksville. West Pittston, defeated at Pittston, went on to victory over Plains and Wyoming. In the last two games of the first half West Pittston broke even, with a loss to Luzerne and a win over Forty Fort. This ended the first half of the Ram's campaign in the West Side Basketball Conference. In the first game of the second half, the Rams lost to Edwardsville by one point in a very thrilling game. The powerful Exeter team overpowered the Rams in the second game. The third game proved more fruitful for West Pittston as they defeated Wyoming. The three following games found West Pittston on the losing side as Plains, Forty Fort, and Luzerne, in that order, all outscored the Rams- In the next game, the Rams scored a victory with their old rivals, Pittston. It was close, but the Rams came through with flying colors. The other team with green and white colors, Larksville, was able to out-score the Rams in a hard-fought contest. In tne final game of the year, the Rams defeated the highly rated Northwest team in a very close battle. In the closing minutes, the lead see-sawed back and forth, but the Rams pulled through, putting West Pittston on top. BAS Leif? 155-TBA L L Han, Mizghl. xMr . They both did a terrific job and are to be commended. Ned was close to the top in scoring honors in the conference this season with an average of 20.3 points per game. The captain of this year's team was Robert Endres. Bob was chosen for sportsmanship, leadership, and abil- ityg he rates highly in all three. Although coach Tom Christian's Rams were not too spectacular this season, next year holds brighter pros- pects. Several juniors and one sopho- more saw action on the varsity team this year. Ronnie Rogers, Mike Austin, and Mike Cefalo were the three under- classmen on the starting line-up. Gerry Zezza, Allan Wicks, Louie DeGennaro, Lee Havard, and Joe Miller also saw action. The one injury of the season was sustained by Tommy Martin, who was the victim of a hit-and-run acci- dent. He was unable to play the last four games. Our Senior Varsity should be com- mended for their fine efforts and sports- manship this past year. JUNIOR VARSITY This season our junior varsity proved to be one of the finest our school has ever seen. The junior Rams had a favorable record of ten wins and eight losses. Their contribution to our bas- ketball season was all-important and many fans came early to watch these hopeful hoopsters in their endeavors- Much of their success can be attributed to the able coaching of Mr. Seiple, who has trained many of our best var- sity players in past years, has many promising prospects that will be sent up to the varsity next year. f-1 ff' JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Left to rzghl Fzrst R011 Robert Sldnl Lowell Dlckson Albert Kammskas laul Whlttaker wlllldm Carx er leon Obrvut John Hood Second Rou Ddvld Wruble Jack Stanton Patmek F.al7one Ron lld Serfoss Joseph Mltchell I h1l1p Powell John Fuehrer Stephen Jacobson Preseason Scores West Plttston West Plttston West Plttston West P1ttston Fxrst Half Plttston Plttston P1ttston Plttston I 1ttston Plttston Plttston Plttston I xttston Northwest Exeter Edwardsw 1lle Larksvxlle Plttston Plalns W xommg Luzerne Fortx Fort West West West West W est W est West West West Svuos ersx xlle Nantlcolxe Tax lor umm Second Half Edwardsw 1lIe Exeter Wx ommg Plalns Fortw Fort Luzerne I lttston Ldrksx llle Nlorthw est Plttston Plttston Pxttston Prttston Plttston Plttston Plttston I lttston I xttston W est W est W est W est West West W est W est W est 'U' -I-'-f- rg-W.. Forty-Fort by a score of 83M to 345. Ned Wicks, top scorer, took three firsts with one being a tie, while Ed Levandowski placed first on two occasions. Additional meets could not be scheduled due to weather conditions and various conflicting activities. Perhaps our team's triumph over Forty-Fort was what spurned them on-to once again claim the district championship. Even though Wyoming and West Pittston appeared to be on an even keel, our track and field stars proved to be superior by coming out on top with a score of 80. This was 13M points above the closest opposing team. Awards, in the form of medals, were issued to all those who placed. Some of the outstanding team members were Gary Vincelli, who placed first in the 100 yard dash, Gene Bonfanti, who took second in the 220 yard dashg Bill Brown, who came in first in the broad jump with 19 feet, 4M inches, and Donny Chaump, who was second in the discus. Ed Levandowski, a newly discovered star, came through with flying colors when he took first in the javeline, and second in the 440 yard dash. 'Ned Wicks headed the list by taking three firsts. He tied for first in the high jump, reached for the record in pole vaulting, but had to be satisfied with firstg and finally, set a new 180 low hurdles record with a time of 21.9 seconds. The 880 relay was run off exceptionally Well by a team con- sisting of Vincelli, Giamber, R. Miller, and Bonfanti. The mile relay was executed in fine style by Levandow- ski, Chaump, LaNunziata, and Rutledge. Both of these races were successfully completed for first place. All those engaging in the district meet who placed either first or second in their varied events were eligible to enter the state contests. Our Junior High Team, coached by Mr. Jones, attended this same district meet and brightened our outlook for the coming seasons. Competition for junior high teams was just started for us three years ago. Steady progress, hard practice, and patience should build fine teams for the future. This year's teamushaped into a fine unit, as the underclassmen were mixed with the veterans to give the former experience and to develop a well-balanced team. As usual a fine representation of boys from our school participated in the State Meet at University Park on Saturday, May 24. This concluded another successful track and field season.
