XX in DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1957, with respect and admiration, dedicate this yearbook to Miss Marguerite Steele, a former member of our high school faculty. Miss Steele attended Wellsboro High School in Tioga County and was graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College. She taught briefly in Del Mar Township, Pennsyl- vania, and in 1920, she moved to Washington, D. C. Here she attended George Washington T University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. While attending the University, Miss Steele was employed by the United States Treasury Department as a supervisor in the MARGUERITE L' STEELE currency department. After six years, she be- gan her teaching career at West Pittston High School, specializing in the social sciences. Besides teaching, Miss Steele has been interested in various educational and social or- ganizations, such as the University Women's Club, the Professional and Business Women's Associa- tion, and the National Educational Association. As a member of the local branch of the P. S. E. A., she has been chairman of the legislative committee for a number of years 3 and she has also been sec- retary of the Parent-Teacher's Association. It is with deep appreciation of the services she has rendered to our classfand its predecessors, that this issue of the Caravan is dedicated to Miss Marguerite Steele. lit K? , , 9, vmws A ' Qu rv X I 'T 1:1 4 BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1957: You embark upon a new adventure during a period of involved changes and stirring interest. Come on, Pub, quit your clowning around, Carp shouts. Wha-do I look like, a monkey? Stop your gapin' and do something. I feel for ya, Pub, but I can't reach ya. Yo, Carp, let go of the rope, the famliiar voice screams from the top of the tent. OK, you asked for it! Thud- Oh, Pub, I'm so-o-o sorry. Ha ha, you're a funny one. Hey, we better get hep. Listen,-that sounds like the barker. Hurry, hurry, step right up and buy your tickets here, Bitty barks. Right this way folks: don't push: there's plenty for everybody. Hurry, hurry, the show starts in a few minutes! Look, there's somebody darting in and out of the line poking a needle in everybody's arms, Rosy shrieks. Who's afraid of the polio shots, brave Helen Alpaugh sings, as she skips to the head of the line. Here comes Ron-Ron running to beat the band. Someday he's going to sleep too long! Heavens to Betsy, there gges Sally driving her Stude that looks like an accident going someplace to happen. Crash-it happened. eep calm, ladies and gents. Everything will soon be under control, 'cause here come our two sensational clowns, Mac-o and Walter, with their blotters and putty knives to clean up the remains. Hey, wait for me, a voice pants breathlessly. Naturally, it's Rita in her usual last minute rush. She isn't a second too early, either, for here comes the band leader, Nan Rut. Ladies and gentlemen, we are proud to introduce our one and only LITTLE TOP Band. We regret to announce that our first number will be omitted due to the absence of two of our main players. One of them, Hubert Rau, is in the hosgital with a concussion. His head accidentally got caught in the cymbals. The other player, Bob Rodham, as been missing since the day of the big wind storm-that's the day some- thing got caught in the tuba. However, the band will play another number. And now, we should like your full co-operation during this very difficult stunt, for the slightest dis- traction will disturb the performer. S-s-s-w-o-o-s-h!!! Gee, I hope they catch him. Splat! Guess he shoulda used a net. Oh well, that's our circus: it's got its ups and downs. If Betty Lou, Marianne, Happy, and Gail aren't quiet in this next act, they'll be thrown out by our bouncers, Ned and Pat 5 then shipped to Greg who is just the man to put them in their place. Gleeks, now he's soaring through the air at the top of the tent. Why, it's our daring young man on the flying trapeze. See how gracefully he-he-oh no! It isn't. . ., but it is! It's none other than Sam Cap- one. Oops, he missed. Going down? Down, down, eek! Whew! Caught just in the nick-o'-time by Joanne Salerno. Wow! Look way over there in the second ring. Who's that guy on stilts? He's not on stiltsg that's Ronnie Rogers. Boy, he has a ringside view of the acrobatsf' Hey, this act is spectacular! Take a gander at the way those books bounce. No need to guess who the star is. Everybody knows that Jackie Draper's practiced in front of the main oflice at West Pittston. What year was that Jackie-1965? Egad. . .here's something charging toward us! Stand back and make way for. . .No need for alarm, folks, it s only Lizzy Burke. She probably saw a blinking red light. Must be she's headed for the third ring to see the animal act. Will ya dig this? It's that ferocious lion tamer, Mr. Thomas. Crack! Look at the poor animal-he's so abused. Could it be that the lion reminds Mr. Thomas of Otto? Ladies and gentlemen, while the performer is preparing for the grand finale, we should like to take time out to thank all of you for visiting our LITTLE TOP. Also, we extend our thanks to the people who made this show possible-the magazine salesmen. And now, folks, you are about to witness the most amazing, the most thrilling, the most incredible performance you will ever see in your lifetime. Not only will our head majorette, Irene, twirl a baton while standing on her horse's back, but also, her horse will wear roller skates. Here she comes. . .let's have a round o app ause. Zoom--and away she goes toward the rear of the tent. Going, going, r-r-i-p, gone--out of the LITTLE TOP and into the pages of our '57 Caravan. 36 ,K S -- '? The harmonizers are Senior members from the previous year, and new girls from the Junior class, who are selected by Miss Fear at the beginning of the year for their musical reading ability, voice quality, and range. The practices that continue from September to April are to obtain the proper blend and balance of these voices, also, to prepare for various programs presented during the course of the year. The Parent-Teacher's Association was the first group for whom the girls' glee club entertained. They sang Allegheny Moon, and Donald EAR . . . . MISS CATHRAN F Wells Joined them in Roses of Picardy. These songs, plus four others that gained popularity during the war, were the numbers sung in chapel for Veterans' Day. Taking the part of a choir, the girls participated in the pageant, which was the highlight of the Christ- mas season. Finally, the main attraction of the year arrived-the Spring Concert. The Girls' Glee Club included in their melodies: Over the Rainbow, You'll Never Walk Alone, and When Over Sunlit Paths. With the completion of the concert, Miss Fear recalled the tryouts, remembered the many practices, and felt rewarded for her job well-done. 44 BOYS' GLEE CLUB Each Tuesday morning, fourth period, one can hear a chorus of male voices issuing from Mr. Nittel's room. This is our boys' glee club, diligently practicing repertoire, which includes such songs as America, Our Heritage, Salutation, and Desert Song. Leonard Brown Ray Crisci Richard Frushon Coaches-Mr. Jones, Mr. Thomas RAMS Once again the West Pittston Rams have gone on to win the West Side Conference Cham- pionship, under the capable leadership of Jack Jones and Olie Thomas. Our opening game of the season was an ex- hibition game against Plymouth High School. Taking advantage of six fumbles, We blanked Plymouth with a score of 32-0. The Rams found an easy foe when they met the Eagles of Edwardsville in the first conference game. They chalked up a 71-18 win, with the second and third string playing most of the game. Disciplinary action by Northwest Area au- thorities against their varsity football squad called off the grid tilt with that High School for this year. Our title hopes were strengthened by a 39-7 victory over Wyoming. One of the outstanding plays of the game was made by Ronnie Shiner, when he picked up a fumble and ran 83 yards to a touchdown. M anagers- . Fred Williams Donald Wells Charles Hayes, William Dankulich 54 James Harned Donald Lloyd D0I18ld M8CD0Dald fcaptallll West Wyoming, next in line, was downed by a score of 45-6. Don MacDonald's 71 yard jaunt for the first T. D. got the game off to a good start. On October 19, with just as much rivalry off the grid- iron as on, the annual non-conference game with Pittston was held. Our boys came through with a 27-13 victory. On a rainy afternoon, Westmoreland was defeated 32-6, with Joe Miller kicking the first extra point through the school window. Weakened by injuries and overcome by West Pittston's football skill, Forty-Fort bowed to the Rams, 45-0. Mon- tayne led the scoring with three T. D.'s. Another traditional arch-rival was defeated with the downfall of St. John's, 52-0. Finally the game of the year arrived. In Kingston Stadium, before the largest crowd of Wyoming Valley foot- ball history, our team met the much publicized Swoyersville eleven. Although the Rams played a brilliant first half, and a good game throughout, they went down to their first defeat in 17 games. The score was 32-0. On Thanksgiving morning, with a real live Ram as a mascot, we completed our conference games with a win over Exeter 20-0. Mickey Melberger paced the Rams' scorers with two touchdowns. The harmonizers are Senior members from the previous year, and new girls from the Junior class, who are selected by Miss Fear at the beginning of the year for their musical reading ability, voice quality, and range. The practices that continue from September to April are to obtain the proper blend and balance of these voicesg also, to prepare for various programs presented during the course of the year. The Parent-Teacher's Association was the first group for whom the girls' glee club entertained. They sang Allegheny Moon, and Donald MISS CATHRAN FEAR Wells joined them in Roses of Picardy. This is our boys' glee club, diligently practicing repertoire, which includes such songs as America, Our Heritage, Salutation, and Desert Song. .. M anagers' n Fred Williams Donald Wells Charles Hayes, William Dankulich 54 James Harned Donald Lloyd Donald MacDonald fcaptalnj West Wyoming, next in line, was downed by a score of 45-6.
