Text from Pages 1 - 74 of the 1956 volume:

So then, come ye, Seniors, Juniors, Come Sophhmores, Freshmen, ell, And we'll keep the echoes rmgmg Through this dear old study hall. Let us Own the white of Vlrtue And the green for youth and rlght As we strive to all be worthy . Of the dear old Green and Whlte. When Commencement Day is over And we turn to tread new ways, We must say good-bye forever To these good old High School Days; And though age will overtake us As the long years pass in flight We shall ne'er forget old High School And the dear old Green and White. $7 5 ?,er ' xa;u m 4 a, 577 SWJ-gbwf, PH- X f36o chhdfeef .40an 7' X8! Myamfndt, 9W4 ?6 47414 THE CARAVAN PRESENTS WEST PITTSTON HIGH SCHOOL, WEST PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA FOREWORD Ye Seniors in high school, look about you and see With the impartial eye of a graduate-to-be, The tfkids you grew up with. Are they still the same types That they were in the A-B-C days of your lives? Is the Brain, with a soaring I. Q. in grade three, Still clutching his books, while in vain trying to see Through his two-inch-thick spectacles, Why therds such a joyous din in that strange social whirl That is too fast for him? Does the Joker still wonder, While fresh from his tricks involving spiders and tacks And such use of his wits, why he's looked at askance By his friends and his teachers, As they move to the opposite side of the bleachers? And the Athleteewe certainly cantt forget hime That mountain of muscle and vigor and vim. B unuwl Slillnn..... K 3' ii I TALENTSV UNAPPRECIXTED He's engrossed in left tackles, split TS, and sore feet, And his intellectual outlook is definitely bleak. Yes, these are your classmates, my disbelieving peers, These, who to a stranger, might register as queers. Thteytve fulfilled the promise of their characters-to-be, And theytre still the same characters they were in grade three. And so to the future-my predictions are these: That after years of hard work, growing pains, and no ease Have furnished a thin veneer of propriety, And provided a countenance of respectable sobriety, You'll still recognize under these superficial graces The little-changed looks on your old classmatest faces. YOU WERE SAYINC? DEDICATION It is with deep regard that the 78th grad- uating class of West Pittston High School dedicates this issue of the Caravan to Mr. E1- mer Armstrong, a member of our high school maintenance staff. Mr. Armstrong is a graduate of West Pittston High School where he was a member of the football team and captain of the track team. He was also Luzerne County Tennis MR- ELMER ARMSTRONG Doubles Champion. He entered the Navy in 1943 and served in the medical corps. His maintenance duties began when he helped his father, whose position he later filled, in caring for the stadium. These duties in- creased until he now has full responsiblity for its upkeep. Mr. Armstrong has displayed his personal interest in our school in many ways. One of these is shown in the free giving of his time and services to help in the running of our Youth Center on Saturday night. The 1956 issue of the Caravan is dedicated to Mr. Armstrong as a visible display of our gratitude. ADMINISTRATION The administration congratulates the Class of '56 upon being the 78th class to graduate from W. P., H. S. During the course of years, many interesting insights into the lives of individuals become apparent. It is very satisfying to see young people grow and develop into men and women;good citizens in a democractic com- munity. When such metamorphosis is witnessed, then we may consider the task satisfactorily complete and a tiwell done may be bestowed. This book records the present, and therein lies a certain amount of its value. However, like all things of worth, the value of this yearbook will increase as time goes on. The memories recorded herein will be fondly recalled as these leaves are turned in years to come. Success to the members of the Class of ,56 in all fu- ture undertakings as individuals as well as a group. MR. ANDREW W. LEWIS MR. R. CHESTER WILLIAMS MR. JAMES T. AYRE CHOOL DIRECTORS Ernest W. The 1956 issue of the Caravan is the result of the combined efforts of ten staffs, three editors, and the Yearbook Adviser, Mr. Brown. Clark Senior High School Band CLASS NIGHT J une 8, 1956 This year the theme of class night was a town picnic honoi'ing the Senior Class of 1956. Some of the people who could be found at our picnic were the caretaker of the park where the picnlc was held; the mayor w1th his speeches; the photographer, who was hired to record the days events; and all the committeemen. The three-legged race, the talent and rock-and-roll contests, and the fashion show, which featured the Junior Miss models, all added up to a full program of entertainment. The theft of the Senior Class diary caused a good deal of excitement and revealed much of the history of the last twelve school years. Color was added to the picnic by the appearance of a band of gypsies who were willing to foretell the futures of the Seniors. Since so many things were lost at the picnic, special time was devoted to returning the articles to their Junior owners. The picnic ended with the formal reading of the Senior Class will and the singing of the class song. The program was then followed by the traditional mantle oration. COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM... WILLIS T. NETTER Director THE SENIOR HIGH BAND The concert band, as pictured above, is composed of eighty some members who play at various school events during the year. The main performance of the band is the annual Spring Concert. This year they played such selections as Richard III Overtureit by German, Deep Purple by DeRose, Battle Hymn of the Re- public, and Warsaw Concerto by Addinsell, with the piano solo played by Anne Rutledge. They also played at P. T. A., pep meet- ings, and in chapel every morning. The marching band, as pictured on the right, is a subdivision of the concert band which consists of about forty people. This year the marching band played in an Armistice Day parade, as well as for football games. At these games, the band executed many clever formations around a central theme. Some of these themes were Beverage Time, itParentsi Day, and ttModes of Transporta- tion. Both bands owe much of their success to the capable and pa- tient direction of Willis T. Netter, who is pictured at the left. 46 CONCERT BAND Left to right: First Row-Philip J ones, Richard J ones, Santo Agolino, Santo Agati, John Zarzecki, Connie Emigh, Harriet Howell, Robert Rodham, Janice Clel- land, Mary Ann Wharen, Sylvia Ann Vincent, James Kelchner, Edward Quinn, Marlene Occhiato, Roberta Howells, Nancy Howe, Nancy Bittinger, Isabel Morgan, Barbara Laird. MAGAZ l NE CAMPAIGN MAGAZINE DRIVE Besides affording the students of West Pittston High School an oppor- tunity to earn prizes and to show their talents in the arts of salesmanship and record keeping, the annual magazine drive is an important factor in the financing of our yearbook. This year high salesmen were Betsy Mirro and Thomas Obrzut for Senior High and Tina Butera and Joseph Costello for Junior High. CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM 53' David Alberigi Merle Bainbridge scored a 33-0 win. Coaches: Left to righte Mr. Thomas, Mr. Jones. Managers George James Smith 0 Robert Tambur 54 Robert Bierly The undefeated Rams of 055 with fifteen returning letter- men compiled a total of 409 points in nine games to win the West Side Conference Championship. The season opener against Edwardsville resulted in a 38-7 victory, with Bob Tambur scoring two touchdowns and Gordy Williams converting three times. The Shickshinny Indians were easily vanquished as we A contributing factor in the continuation of our winning streak was Wyomingts eleven fumbles. Lenny Brown scored two touchdowns on passes as West Pittston was victorious 74-0. In a game that was post- poned twice by a hurricane, the Rams whipped West Wyoming 53-13 with a dazzling intercep- tion by Nick Volpetti. 0 Robert Todd Samuel Cipolla Richard Havard Joseph Nardone The following game was a significant one, as we defeated our yearly rival, Pittston, 20-7. H Westmoreland was the next opponent to feel the effect of the Green Wave. They were set back 38-0 with Melvin Montanye scoring three times for the Rams. We toppled our arch-rival, Forty Fort, 58-0. In this game we managed to: m capture the championship of the West Side Conference t2i achieve our seventh straight win for the season t3T stop the ttFlyers' winning streak and extend our own scoring streak to thirty-seven straight games. On a snow-soaked field we defeated St. Johns 43-0. Merle Bainbridge, an outstanding Split-T quarterback, ran and passed for the first two touchdowns to pilot the team to its one- sided win. On November 24, we amply repaid Exeter for the previous years loss as the West Pittston Rams defeated them in a traditional Turkey Day game by a score of 53-7. This was the climax to a highly successful season. Just as important as the winning of the much-coveted West Side Conference Champion- ship were the honors given to the team by their own townspeople. David Alberigi was chosen for the Wyoming Valley A11 Scholastic Team, and the Rams were presented with pens, pins, jackets, and three turkey dinners by proud members of our ccmmunity. The team further commended Merle Bainbridge for his fine contributions to the success of the Touchdown Terrors of West Pittston High School by electing him captain. Nicholas Volpetti John Watson Gordon Williams 55 BASKETBAL The 1956 edition of the Rams Basketball Team, one of the tallest in Wyoming Valley,s history, completed a successful season with a record of twenty wins and five losses. To set the pace for the season, the Rams won all five exhibition games with Tunkhannock, a new rival; Taylor; Hughestown; Wilkes-Barre Township ; and ouretraditional opponents, the Alumni Association. The first four games of the league season were a com- bination of two wins and two losses. At this point began a winning streak which continued through eight games. In one of these games, with Forty Fort, the Rams com- bined the speed of the backcourt men with the height of the pivot men, Charles Hayes, 6' 2 and Robert Clarke, 6' 9 , to chalk up 106 points, the largest number in any conference game of the 1956 season. The winning streak, broken by a loss to Luzerne, continued again for five con- secutive games. We then met Edwardsville in the Wilkes College gym in a game to determine the champions of the second half of the Valley League season. In this game which ran into an overtime period, we were defeated by two points. For the first time, the Rams journeyed to the Bloomsburg Tournament held at that state teach- erst college. A game with a Class A school, Pottsville, resulted in our elimination from the tourna- ment. Although we won no championship, we were the only team to have two players choseh for the starting lineup on the Valley All Star Team, Robert Clarke and Gordon Williams. We recelved fur- ther recognition when Gordon Williams was voted the most valuable player in this annual Dream Game. In an important, but perhaps not so spectacular manner, the teamwork of the Rams was assisted by the fine playing of the six Seniors, John Mulhall, Merle Bainbridge, Nicholas Volpetti, Donald Grodis, Robert Hughes, and J oseph Nardone, and the four J unior members, J erome Kosloski, Charles Hayes, Donald Lloyd, and Joe Miller. District two P. I. A. A. Class B track champion is West Pittston High School for the eleventh time in thirteen years. By winning the 1955 Championship, West Pittston tied a record held by Forty Fort of five successive years of victory in District 2 track. By winning this year, a new record has been established which will probably stand for many years. West Pittston also holds the following all time District Two records: 180 yard low hur- dles, 1953; 440 yard dash, 1953; 880 yard relay, 1953; 1 mile run, 1955. The 1956 team led by eight seniors was exceptionally strong and several boys were unbeaten in both Class A and Class B com- petition. Donald MacDonald, Roberthartlett, Rob- ert Hughes, and Gordon Williams won the two 59 Mr. Jones, Mr. Brown Assistant Coaches mile event of the Emmett Jordan Memorial Relayis in the time of 8:43.1 to establish a new recor . GYM TZAM Those whose talents lean toward gymnastics have ample opportunity to display them at the annual gym team exhibi- tion. This year both the participants and the audience enjoyed the performance, which was under the direction of Mrs. Thomas Llewellyn and Mr. Elwood Swingle. The boys' and girls' teams alternately performed on the rings, parallel bars, and the other apparatus. The drills and dances of the Junior High Girls were executed with precision, and the colorful square dance done by the Senior High Boys' and Girls, teams brought this annual project to a successful close.
