You will part, perhaps forever, from close friends Whose companionship you have enjoyed. You can't turn back fnor should you want to 3. you should be eagerly anticipating the next phase of your life. Plan, how- ever, to return for such reunions as were held last year, you will enjoy them. The last diploma to be awarded this year will be the 3944th since the organiza- tion of this institution in 1876, the Centennial Year of our Republic. It will be the 3287th to bear my signature fand the last, for, like you, I am about to leave these old familiar places. Most of you will have spent twelve years here, I shall have spent thirty-one. You will miss the daily associationsg so shall IA-'especially the morning assembly. Why should I feel thus? While the parents of at least eight of you were students, I was helping to plan this school building. It has ever been my aim to have this school stand out as an example of what can be accomplished in a relatively small Districtg to a degree that goal has been achieved, in spite of depression, subsidences, and war. So I terminate my period of service with a measure of satisfaction. In conclusion I want you to know that I shall always cherish my associations with you. In some small way I trust that I may have been helpful to each one of you. And finally, I hope that everyone of you will be successful in whatever field of service you may choose. Sincerely, '7 my Awar Our director, Mr. R. J. W. Templin, is the father of nine children, and yearly exercises fatherly care over more than a thousand students. Thirty-one classes have had the good fortune to graduate under his competent direction. All of us will remember his understanding of our needs, his patience with our problems, and his use of authority when it was necessary for the best interests of the West Pittston Public Schools. A graduate of Shamokin High School, Mr. Templin received his Sc.B. and A.M. degrees from Bucknell University, earning the former by taking four hours from his work as a stenographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad in order to attend classes at the University, and by working an hour extra four nights in the week to compensate for the time off. Later, he received the Tustin award in Psychology, Ethics, and Philosophy. Previous to the beginning of his career in the West Pittston schools in 1923, he taught general subjects in a one-room country school in Northumberland County, physics in Bucknell Academy, and mathematics in the Wilkes-Barre City High School. He was principal of Sunbury High School, and instructor in mathematics at Lafayette College. Since coming to West Pittston, Mr. Templin has taught grad- uate courses in Education at Wilkes College, and, during the emergency training period prior to World War II, supervised Fundamentals of Engineering courses in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Teaching is Mr. Templin's chief concern. He is also very much interested in guidance. He has been an active member of the Kiwanis Guidance Conference, which for thirteen years has served hundreds of high school students throughout Greater Pittston. For many years he has tested and interviewed candidates for nursing at Pittston Hospital. It is with pride and gratitude that we, the Class of 1954, dedicate the Caravan to the leader who has helped make our high school one of the finest in the area. May he always find a special place in his heart for us, as we will always have one in our hearts for him. Q-vu Left to rzght: Seated ---Richard, Mr. Templin, Mrs. Templin, Evelyn fEckl. Hello again from the Hol lywood of Northeastern Penn sylvama West Pittston' Our column this issue will be cen tered on the understudies for the featured players As you all know not everyone can be famous at the same time but as the Senior sun sets on the horizon the underclassman moon beams all the brighter Their deeds promise to be spec tacular The movie camera now focuses on the up and coming talent in Junior High School An especially fine performance was the Harvest Hoe down which was presented for the November P T A The nar rator was Raymond Crisci W all enjoyed the vocal talent displayed by Ronald Rogers Richard Hines Nancy Weimer and June Ardohne Sylvia Vincent played the marimba and Eugene Manganello the accordion Next in the line of enter- tainment was the Chri tmas program narrated by Sandra Deitrick. Solos were sung by Mary Ann Wharen and Gail Kri e The latter also played the piano in a piano-organ duet with Miss Fear. The underclassmen have been very active in producing chapel entertainment. Yes, you can see the colors flying and hear the stirring music of the Green and White band, accompanied by the cheerleaders and the majorettes, fine and spirited additions to the musical group. This year, under Mr. Netter's splendid super- vision, the' marching band created many interesting formations during halftime. These included repre- sentations of a trumpet, keystone, violin, bicycle, and church. A new idea for the presentation of the colors was also introduced. The Green and White band is the same band which could be heard playing that inspiring music for P. The concert featured Aurora by Yoder, a comedy entitled Bedtime Story, Merry Widow, Knightsbridge March, and anumber of solo and duet selections. As they went through their routines on the mats, rings, and parallel bars, the girls evinced skill and agility in the stunts taught them by Mrs. Llewellyn. The members of the boys' gym team, under the direction of Mr. Swingle, ex- hibited special talent in back flips and all kinds of complicated twists and turns on the trampoline, as well as on the mats. Also noteworthy were their performances on the parallel bars, rings, high bar, ropes, and all the other gym equipment. 45 GIRLS' CLEE CLUB First Sopranos Left to right: First Rowe Ontalee Soricelli, Carole Grey, Ellen Shiffer, Edna Reeves, Marianna Reid, Nancy David, Eva Chris- tian, Nancy Smiles. THE STARS ARE SINGING As you walk from one end of the main hall to the other during fourth period on Tuesday morning, you will hear strains of harmony coming from the girls' and boys' glee clubs as they diligently practice for the annual Spring Concert. The girls' glee club, under the careful guidance of Miss Fear, spends most of the time singing such songs as Sweethearts and You're Just In Love. In Room 19, the boys, led by Mr. Netter, are concentrating mainly on part singing. Some of their specialties are Desert Song, The Pirate Song, and The Halls of Ivy. VELVET TOUCH Do you frequently hear the echo of an organ melody during the noon hour and after school? You can be sure that one of the members of the organ club is practicing earnestly. These talented musicians, instructed by Miss Fear, offer organ preludes at P. T. A. and add much to our chapel programs. ENCORE This year, Mr. N etter's Junior Band displayed fine talents at the Annual Spring Concert. Am-ong their selections were Pacific Grandeur and Brasses Triumphant March. Sylvia Ann Vincent rendered a marimba solo. We are sure that next year tl3e Senior Band will benefit through the preliminary experience gained by these uniorsf' IT REMAINS TO BE SEEN The Camera Club has been originated this year by Mr. Shook. Today is Thursday, so a few of them can be found in the typing room, under the supervision of Miss Clelland. Here the College Prepara- tory and General Course students are taught such essentials as proper spacing, ac- curacy, and speed Ainformation valuable in their future work, whether as typists or as college students. The Juniors can be found in this same room on Friday, under the leadership of Miss Curtis. They are taught the parts of the typewriter, keyboard control, paragraphing, and rhythme-the latter to the strains of music such as the Doll Dance. Preparation like this will enable them to become accomplished typists in a comparatively short time. JIGSAW Straight line! Proper technique! Placement is important! .... These words can be heard as one passes Room F. The mechanical drawing club has helped the students to use drafting instruments and to make isometric drawings and architec- tural designs. Mr. Williams hopes the Juniors will be interested next year, since not many of them were currently in the club because of their crowded schedule. See you next year. Hope you accomplish as much as we did. RAINBOW ROUND MY SHOULDER Quiet! Genius at work! In the art room during the first two periods on Wednes- day, you will see the future Rembrandts, Dalis, and Cezannes busily engaged in creating the masterpieces of the age. Included in the finished products are paintings, sculptures, carvings, and sketches. The art club has also contributed to the colorful displays in the main hall and to the Christmas decorations during the Yuletide season. The Rams charged into the first game against Shickshinny and scored a 62-0 win. Tommy Evans led the nine-touchdown parade with three scores. A crack defensive team held Shickshinny to minus forty yards. We gained our second win at the expense of Dallas Township, 68-0. Nick Volpetti paved the way with three touchdowns as we made our highest score. Bernie Wierbowski achieved special recognition by winning honorable men- tion on the All-American High School football team. Coach Lew Shook's team was sparked by four veterans of last year's campaignACharles Lepore, George Mazur, Peter Car- rozza, and Bernie Wierbowski. Newcomers Joe Raymond, Thomas Lloyd, and Gordon Williams filled vacant varsity po- sitions very capably. In dependable substitute roles were John Poder, John Kizis, Robert Checkele, and John Mulhall. This entire aggregation compiled a record of thirteen wins and ten losses. The team started the season off in an encouraging manner, as we opened our exhibition series by. defeating a classy Taylor H. S. team. Success was ours again, when we racked up an im- pressive win over Dunmore High School, which is rated a Class A school, and then over Hughestown H. S., the Regional Class C Champs. Our next game was against Wilkes-Barre Township, and this we won by one point on a foul shot which was sunk during the closing seconds of the game. The last exhibition game of the year was our traditional game against the Alumni. Youth and agility proved too much for our older opponents, as we registered our fifth straight win. Although we could not keep our undefeated record for the rest of the season, the team did manage to win its share of the league games. One of the main reasons for the team's success was its height. Included among our tall men were: George Mazur, 6' 3 3 Bernie Wierbowski, 6' 1 g John Kizis, 6' 3 g John Poder, 6' 1 g and Gor- don Williams, 6'. Three of the brightest spots on our team were high scorers George Mazur, Charles Lepore, and Gordon Williams. Gordy filled ,in exceptionally well for center George Mazur, who was injurel during the first half of the league season. Even though the current season was good, Coach Shook is looking forward to a still better showing in next year's campaign. He will be relying on the hight of John Poder, John Kizis and Gordon Williams, and on the playmaking abilities of John Mul- hall, Thomas Lloyd, and Robert Checkele. Coach Tom Christian's scrub team had an impressive record this year, one slightly better than that of the varsity. The scrubs played an inspired type of ball at all times during the season and they found that this practice paid off in victory almost always. Coach Christian has developed some fine prospects for next year's varsity-Merle Bainbridge, Joe Nardone, Don Grodis, Joe Miller, Ray Frushon, Donald Lloyd, and Leonard Brown- all of whom will be seeking varsity berths next year. Since the advent of an eighth grade basketball team a few years ago, our scrub team has shown much more class. Many fine players were developed from this team this season, and these boys will be eligible for league competition next year on the scrub team. For the last few years, our team has shown a definite trend to- ward improvement, and we hope that this will continue in the fu- ture. We look forward to next season, with expectancy of success and even greater glory for the basketball Rams of West Pittston. 61 ....,64 Exeterw... . .... 54 Larksville, . .
