' u 'Ji r A n 'U Q WEST HIGH SCHOOL 29l0 N. l91h Ave. Phoenix, Arizona 85015 This will probably be the last issue of the WESTERNER -- according to the newest directive from the governing board, West High School will no longer exist after this school year ends. Both Phoenix Vocational Academic Center and the Traditional school will occupy these buildings in the future. Naturally, there will always be a West High in our memories. This is the thirty-third volume of the yearbook and while it is not the smallest, it does contain fewer pages this year. The elimination of many programs and activities have brought about the change. Many things stand out when recalling the school year -- the free breakfast before the C.A.T. test -- the day students were sent home because of the power failure -- the prom and other dances -- registration at West for students that wi be leaving next year -- all in all, it has been a different year. You have seen it all - now let these pages help remind you of the 1982 - 83 school year. YI H ggudil- not 'U' A 4...- 252032 if uv-QI' AQUA MXWWSM IQQRMT Sislfer. Coach Gene Cox was faced with the task of molding a very inexperienced group of young men into a unit which could function as a team. The instruction and hours of hard practice all came together in the T-Bird's only win, a 27- 3 romp over Arcadia. That game helped the team overcome some of the frustrations brought on by mistakes during the earlier season games. The top performers for the gridders were Billy Albritton, Art Burnett, Steve Cunningham, Ron Scrog- gins, Brian Wills, and Brian Wojcieckowski. Wills and Fernando Cota were picked as co-captains, Jerry Moudy was named the top running back, Mike Copeland was selected as the most im- proved, and Mark Esquer as the spark plug of the squad MAN, THAT SMARTS! Although the team came out on the short end of the score in both con- tests, it was not because of the lack of desire and hustle, it was an old problem -- the lack of experience. Coach Denise Petersen's team was able to come away with the victory in a thrilling match by taking two games to one. During the season most of the matches were very close and exciting for the team and spectators. Coach Petersen was definitely pleased with the steady improvement and desire of her girls. For their outstanding efforts during each game, Cyenthia Battiest, team captain, and Jenell Ramella were se- lected as the most valuable players. J. V. VOLLEYBALL TEAM front row: Maria Gutierrez, Lynn Cunningham, Veidra Le Jander, Anna Edwards, back row: Kelly Cunningham, Lisa Baldwin, Jenell Ramella, Cyenthia Battiest, Coach Denise Petersen, Karen Richmond, Debbie Pitman, Dwone Sanfie, Sonia Alfaro, , 54 volleyball This year's J.V. softball team was young and inexperienced but grew with the season into a team that showed the poten- tial of being a real winner in the future. Coach Mat-thew's nine, showing continued improvement, was able to split the year with 6 wins and 6 losses. Two outstanding contests came in the wins over Casa Grande and Scottsdale. These victories along with the three over Carl Hayden highlighted the season for these young ladies. Top hurler for the T-Birds was Dolly Pinkava who had five wins to her credit. Other outstanding performers were Jeannie Rodriguez, who was also named the most reliable player, and Teri Propati, who had the most home runs. The coach and team picked Sylvia Vasquez as the most improved player: Teresa Smock, most hardworking: and Debbie Castro as the squad's spark plug. S0 F TBAll GIRLS' J. V. 'O girls' softball 55 BASKETBALL Winning was the way this year for the junior varsity cagers as they ran and shot their way through a tough schedule, scoring 11 wins against only seven defeats. Highlighting the season were many very close games with victory hanging on the rim until the last few seconds. Especially exciting were the games against Camelback and Glendale. In the second Camelback tilt, the T-Bird five, trailing by five points with only 45 seconds re- maining, shut off the Spartans completely and won by four counters. Against Glendale, a last second shot by Jim Coker ripped the nets, giving the locals the win. Coach Jim Hatfield considered, however, that the games against Cactus and Tre- vor Browne were the team's finest efforts, not because they won, but in those games the Thunderbirds played as a team and made very few mistakes. As the Coach said about his team, There were no individual stars, the success of the team was due to a balance of talent and their aggressive play on defense. Donald Rodgers was given the honor as being the best all-around player, Mark Florendo and Anthony Mitchell, the most improved: Jim Coker, the best free throw shooter, and Phuong Dang, the player with the most hustle. Opening their schedule with a come-from-behind win over Arcadia, the J.V. baseball team continued their winning ways throughout most of the 1983 season. Another big win for the T-Birds was the 12-4 rout of Carl Hayden. In that tilt they swatted 12 hits and pilfered 13 bases. Coach Robert Young voiced his pleasure with his team's hustle, dedication and hard work. Those qualities enabled the local nine to achieve much of its success. For their efforts the coach named the follow- ing boys as his outstanding performers: Bill Albritton, whose home run highlighted the Arcadia tilt, Dwane Carpenter, Mario Armendarez, Frank Canez and Chris Jackson. 58 baseball l 1 2195? FRESHMAN BASEBALL members: front: Leonard Cuellar, Cecilio Garcia, Ben Soto, Richard Orto, Rudy Lugo, back: Gabrial Armavica, Danny Vasquez, Hector Baca, Phillip Burris and Coach Reg Matthews. The biggest win for this year's freshman baseball squad was the 9-0 defeat of Carl Hayden. Besides shutting out the Fal- cons, Coach Reg Matthews horsehiders played errorless ball. The coach cited the excellent play of Phil Burres at short- stop and the pitching of Gabrial Amavlca as a highlight of the season. Other individuals who gave outstanding performan- ces were Richard Otero, Cecilio Garcia, x Soto and Tony Murillo. l,. lnexperience was the main problem that the girls' basketball squad had to face during the 1983 schedule. Even though it was composed of mostly freshmen, Coach Bill lanneIIi's five proved to be very competitive while playing at the junior var- sity Ievel. Senior Dolly Pinkava was a steadying influence and and an outstanding performer for the Thunderbird quintet. Also noteworthy was the hustle displayed by Lupe Gutierrez throughout the season. Getting all the girls to show up at one time was, according to the coach, one of his highlights of the season.
