We started off with a terrific new principal, Mr. Dye, who brought on the Friday Fireside chats along with the use of the suggestion box with the help of Student Government. Class periods this year were longer than they have been in the past several years. The fifty-five minute periods give students more working time for classes and laboratories. This spring we also had mini classes where we spent two days trying out different subjects every period. We had a wide variety of classes to choose from including belly dancing and glass blowing. West is one of the trial schools for the adaptive P.E. Program. We trained student tutors to help those who have problems in Physical Education. Our cafeteria received a whole new decorating job including colorful new tile, chairs and tables., A new learning disability center was added to the campus of West which is used for Special Education. Also our pendulum was put into operation in the science lobby. Although our athletic teams still aren't the greatest, we have im- proved over the past few years. The Drama Department's production of Oliver was excellent this year and was selected best in the valley by the Phoenix Musical Theater. This is our second year to be the only school in the state to have Se- niors pictured in color in the yearbook. There has been an increase in school spirit this year and all in all, West keeps getting better and better! SENIORS UNDERCLASS Mr ,Sf f A My ' 4 . 1 i 4,3 f 41-?75'. This year's activities started off by sponsoring the Faculty Breakfast, and then a car wash. The seniors had a Slave Day Sale which proved to be very profitable. The Seniors also sponsored the Home- coming Dance which brought a record breaking profit of 725 dollars, and proved to be most spirited with the Ion- gest spirit chain. Traditionally the Seniors went to Flag- staff and cut down a Christmas tree for the quad, sold candy canes and went Christmas caroling. During 50's Week the Seniors sponsored a great 50's dance with records. To top the great Senior year off they had two All Night Parties, one at Disneyland and one at Big Surf. Af- ter four great years the class of 75 is looking forward to the happy day of graduation. The class of 75 wishes to extend their appreciation to Dr. Borek and Mr. West for being their sponsors and helping them through the years at West High. VARSITY FOOTBALL The squadls won and loss record does not indicate their true accomplishments. They opened the campaign with only five lettermen and despite many injuries were molded into a unit by Coaches Shepard, Johnson, and Thies that was able to score against every team and produce a squad member who reached All-American status. Actually the T-Birds were only outclassed by two foes, while in their other losses, they were able to keep the score close enough to make the games exciting. The many injuries to key players hampered the team's chances of picking up a few more wins in the second half of their schedule. High points of the season had to come in the big win over Toll- eson and the tie with Carl Hayden which came in a last-sec- ond touchdown. Bob Westbrook, named to the All-American high school grid team for 1974, took most of the individual honors, being se- lected to the all-division, all-city, and all-state first squads. FRESH MAN A FOOTBALL Making the fortunes of West High football appear much brighter in the future, the Freshman A eleven ran up a sea- son record of six wins, two losses, and tie against tough competition last fall. Highlighting the action for the big first-year team were the three, shut-out wins that were scored over Central 126-OJ, Carl Hayden Q26-Ol, and Alhambra Q36-Ojg especially re- warding were the wins over Central and Alhambra. The squadls coaches, Mr. Williams and Mr. Van Ouathem, feel that if the members of this team continue to improve and display the same winning attitude, West could be a contender for the division title within the next three years. SPORTS 1 J.V. FOOTBALL A young jayvee football squad went into the 1974 grid cam- paign with limited experience but with high hopes for a successful season. From the opening game, however, the team was plagued with injuries, the most serious setback being the loss of quarterback Charles Frazier, The chances for victory faded as their ranks became thinner, but the de- termination and spirit remained throughout their schedule. The one victory in eight starts for the J.V. eleven came in a thriller over Carl Hayden in which ace receiver, Mark Cor- onado, scored the only touchdown. Coaches Maxey and Ranshaw singled out Frazier, Cor- onado, Mark Penartz, Steve Abril and Nick Cosmakos for their play during the season. FRESHMAN B FOOTBALL What happens to a team that was outmanned and stomped on in its first outing? A team with good qualities fights back, showing improvement each week and ending up with respect in themselves and their season record. And that's just what the Freshman B gridders accomplished this year. Coaches Munson and Bakemeir expressed pride in the fact that there were almost twice as many members on the team at the end of the season than in that opening game, and that in each game the players became much tougher. ln na- ming all his boys as outstanding players, Coach Munson said that he had a great team effort and the cooperation of all the boys during the seasonfl FRESHMAN A FOOTBALL W ,ML . 0 9 9 0 .H ,N . . 1..,,,.., ,ws r i u . A good defense is the best offense might not always be a true axiom, especially when the offense is not putting enough points through the hoop to come out on the long end of the score. This was definitely the problem of Coach Bob Van Quathem's junior varsity basketball squad which held almost half of its opposition to less than 50 points each but could come up with enough counters for only two wins. The coach noted that 11 of the team's losses were by less than 10 points and that we iust lacked the offensive punch to win. Bob Stein garnered most individual attention as he averaged 10 rebounds a game and scored a season high of 33 points against North High. ' The Varsity Wrestlers grappled their way to an impressive 7 and 3 record for 1974s75, achieving the first winning sea- son in six years. Coach Bill Hutcherson once said that if a few experienced wrestlers would continue competition into their senior year, he would produce a winner for the school. This year the squad featured five such seniors, and they helped make the coach's promose come true. Four of those seniors carried West's ,colors into State Championship Competition. Taking most of the individual honors was heavyweight Bob Westbrook who grasped a first place in the division and second in state. Also receiving mention for their con- tributions were Neil Nepsky, Toby Estrada, Dave Pierce and Kelly Pitts. Several top flight lettermen will be back next year to strengthen West's wrestling program. A continued strengthening of West's wrestling program was evident in the junior varsity matmenis 8 and 3 record. The top performance by the squad was in game eleven when they pounded Camelback for a 9-4 victory. The coach said that several, early season games were lost because the team failed to hit when they had men on base: against Camelback, however, they put it all together. Last summer I was privileged to spend two months in North Africa as one of West's A.F.S. candidates. Life in the small Arab nation of Tunisia was a totally new cultural experience for me, opening my eyes to a completely different way of life. Moslem traditions dominate Tu- nisian Iives. For example, men and women often wear long robes over their normal clothing-whenever they go out. It was not at all unusual for my father to have two wives and eighteen children - another Moslem tradition. Half of my summer was spent four blocks from the Mediterranean Sea in a coastal village. The Io- cation was beautiful, especially during our evening strolls up and down the beach. For the remainder of the summer I lived on an old homestead farm - complete with cows, donkeys, goats, chickens and dogs. During my two months in Tunisia I came to love and understand another culture through the warmth of my host family and the sponsorship of West's A.F.S. program. Marilyn Haas 126 LIFE As an American Field Service representative to the small coun try of South Africa, I encountered many unusual and fas- cinating sights. My 10 week stay was spent in the small town of Brokpan which is located about 30 miles east of Jo- hannesburg, the largest South African city. My first weeks in Brokpan were spent touring the local South African gold mines, staying in a flat along the beach of the Indian Ocean and generally leading the life of a native South African. I spent the next five weeks in the local high school, where I wore the traditional school uniform and studied African History and the second language of South Africa, Afrikaans. I would like to say that the highlight of my A.F.S. experience was the family with whom I stayed. PRINCIPAL The staff and advisor of The Westerner kindly allowed me until the last possible publishing deadline to write this note, but even so I must write several weeks before my first school year at West High School ends. Even so, I feel confident that I can say that 1974-75 has been the most enjoyable year I have ever had as a school administrator. As new Principal of West High School, I was very fortunate to inherit a fine administrative staff, a wonderful faculty, top- notch office help, an excellent maintenance crew, and, above all, a truly great group of student citizens. The Student Government has been truly outstanding in every respect, and, with the leadership of the student officers, committees have really functioned, classes have been active, clubs have provided opportunities for students to develop skills and also friendships, and in short, every aspect of the campus seems to me to be rising to the challenge of making West High School a continuing leader among the schools of our city and state. Certainly, as will be the case so long as humans survive on this earth, there are things that need to be done, improvements that can be made, outdated ideas to be laid aside and new ideas to be explored. With the fine help of the citizens of West High School, I look forward to the future with the spirit chosen by the Seniors as the theme for this year's graduation speeches - Where there is friendship, there is hope for human beings. Robert A. Dye Principal V- Associate Principal Mr. Larry -Kelly A dministrative A ssistants Mr. Jerome Siegel Mrs. Jeanne Schoolland Q 4 4 To the students of West High School: Students, faculty, and patrons of West High School will note, at the time of this publication, that which was a landmark in this area is gone. The Annex, which served students at West High School as well as the Phoenix Union High School System officials, lived a full and useful life. Making way for progress, it will be replaced with much needed additional student parking. ln the near future, West High School will be the recipient of a new Instructional Materials Center to be located in the Quad as well as re- frigeration for the remainder of the plant. We all look forward to that day. Larry K. Kelly School Activities, attendance, discipline and sports make up just a part of the duties of the Administrative Assistant. Their offices are usually crowded with students who feel the need for special guidance in adjusting to life here at West High School. They are very much a part of the traditions of this campus. I'd like to send out a special Thanks to my Staff. I would like to Thank Mr. Zimmerman for his understanding and help. I really enjoyed the chance to work on this Yearbook. Photographers Jim Agee, Wendy Erotas, JoAnne Cesar, and to Darwin Levie you did a fine job of taking the underclass pictures, and also processing and printing of all life shots. My personal thanks to Darwin for the great job he also did on all of the headlines he provided. I am lucky to have worked with two very fine writers Sandy Gwillim, Collie Stroud. Your ideas and imaginations were outstanding. Donna Wells you did a long hard job alone of making lay- outs and doing the paste up. It takes a lot of typing to go into a book. Beverly Brewer, Lisa Livensparger put in many extra hours in typing for this book. Filing, running errands, sorting paper are just a few of the jobs that Liz Cole and Gwen Joplin have done as General Staffers. I shall never forget the help that Mr. Agee has given us in our sports section. Mr. Fincher and his class provided the typing for our index, Mr. Hill was kind enough to organize our individual classes. We couIdn't have done it without you. Mr. Ron Nielsen you provided the encouragement that has created this book and I personally Thank You. I appreci- ate Community Press for understanding the difficulties of publishing a Yearbook. Thank You for your patience. I hope you have enjoyed the great job Keith Cole did on the printing of the Senior pictures. I hope you have enjoyed this past year as much as I have enjoyed the past four years. This Book has brought me a lot of pleasure. I hope you are pleased with it. wo Denise Sherrill Editor 196 lT's OVER s. if ri I xi 5 issi. 3 , , 4 g JUNIORS ATTENTION Class of T976 Pictures for use in the T976 WESTERNER will again be taken on campus.
