A523 X4 i SENIORS President Carl English l l Under the leadership of President Carl English, this year's Super Seniors ' have accomplished many things. Among the goals achieved by the class of '74 were a record-breaking Homecoming dance that netted S701.00, a Homecoming float that won the Most Pertaining to Theme award, and first place in the Magazine Sale. The Seniors also upheld many traditions this year, including the 2nd Annual Donkey Basketball Game, the trip up north to cut the Senior Christmas tree for the quad and the all-night party held at Big Surf. Besides all of this, the Seniors sold popcorn to earn money for the class gift and the Senior Bash, catered again with Kosher food and supplied with music by Smoky. On June 6, 580 Seniors will graduate from West High, leaving behind four years of unforgettable memories. The Freshmen class swept the Junior Olympics, winning most of the events. They also competed in the Homecoming feastivities by building a float. Carmel Corn was sold by the Freshmen, and a Car Wash was held. The sponsors supporting the Freshmen in their Battle against up- per classmen were Mrs. Cripps and Mr. Rose. Many hours were spent after school and on weekends preparing these floats for exhibition. Activities, ranging from water balloon fights to tricycle races were planned. People from all four classes competed against each other everyday with the Freshmen coming out on top almost everytime. Finally, Friday came with the assembly, announcement of the nominees and the traditional class songs. Half-time at the Homecoming game was a kaleidoscope of tears, joy, and happiness with the announcement of King, Dan Curtis and Queen, Linda Vawter. The band float won the Grand Sweepstakes in float competition, Sophomores most original and Seniors most pertaining to the theme, Up, Up and Away. After the excitement of the dance, Homecoming was over for another year, leaving only the memory of the climax of Fall season in the minds of all. Coach Bob Widmer, who wound up a difficult five years as headman for the T-Birds, went into the season with a team lacking in size, speed, and depth, but he was able to instill in his players the determination and character that enabled them to battle back each week and maintain the poise possessed by a well-disciplined team. The final contest, that 27-26 thrilling victory over Trevor Browne, has to be labeled as the high point of the season. Those final few minutes when the defensive team had to dig in to preserve the win brought about as much excitement as any one could desire in a game. , Individual honors for the season went to Rick Telles who was selected to the All-Division, defensive first team and to an honorable mention spot for the All-State defensive squad. Tim Peachey was also given a first string All-Division position as a tackle, while Don Harper was a second team defensive back selection for the same honor squad. 102 Sports D00 Johnson Marty Shepard Bob Widmer Backfield Coach Line Coach Head Coach HOLD HIM, JEFF! Throughout the '73 season, the strong, spirited play of the junior varsity eleven gave a definite indication that better things may be coming our way next year. The team, coached by Craig Thies and Ray Maxey, ran up an 8-2 record, second overall of the eleven schools in the PUHS District and the best for a West J.V. grid squad in ten years. According to the coaches, this team, which averaged 25 points a game to 10 for their opponents, exemplified the theory that hard work and dedication produces winners. Their determination to be a winner was clearly indicated in the Phoenix Union game when the team had to come from behind to grab the victory. The members of this team will probably be the varsity leaders for the next two years. 104 Sports 5 . he Sam Patterson and Rudy Ramirez helped manage this year's JV Football team. FRESHMAN A ' A- '? The Phoenix Division schools fielded some of the top J.V. teams in the state with at least five squads that were capable of beating anyone on their schedules. lt was against this type of com- petition that Coach Bob Van Quathem's quintet came alive in the second half of the season to win eight games in a row before dropping their final tilt by three points. As their coach pointed out, the success of the season came from their overall team effort, and that if they con- tinue this hard work and dedication, they should con- tinue to be winners. 108 Sports 33,4 43 .msgs HA sr 5 7841 L First row I-r: Dale Denman, Charles Maciel, Albert Abril, Jeff Rolan, Marty Kerlin, Jeff Richardson, Barry Wray, second row I-r: Coach Van Quathem, Chris Villemez, Rick Jones, David Olin, Rick Calkins, Rick Owens, Kip Phelps. Coach Bill Hutcherson, hoping for strong help from seniors, again found them missing -only three, including Bill McCaw, the team's most outstanding wrestler, returning for action - leaving the coach the difficulty of rebuilding for the season. This was a great season for McCaw, a four-year letterman, who grabbed a first place in the Division tourney, second in the Peoria lnvitationals, and fourth in the state finals. Underclassmen Bob Westbrook, Dar- win Levie, and Tini Estrada were the teams's other outstanding performers. The J.V. squad, which consisted of several first year wrestlers, came away with one more victory than did the varsity. Stung by early season losses, West 's three baseball squads, Varsity, J.V., and Freshman, were able to fight their way up the win column as the season progressed. Varsity coach, Jim Stitt, lacking experienced pitchers, counted on the defensive ability of the players to hold the team together and give the young hurlers the support they would need during the season. Mark Savarese, catcher and team captain, has much to do with the success of the team through his leadership and han- dling the pitching staff, while Byron Ethier, Flick Telles, Gil Garcia, and Steve Wallace were defensive leaders. The iunior varsity teams in football and basketball were outstanding for West, and Coach Dick Saunders nine, with a record of five and two at midseason, appeared to be headed for a similar success. According to the coach, the members of this team, which had strong hitting, good pitching, and solid defense, have the potential to give the school one of the best varsity teams in the city within the next two years. Pitchers Dale Denman, Chris Villemez, and Joe Fackson and catchers Flick Jones and Fred Roggin gave the squad the depth in battery choices that is necessary for a strong team. Learning the basic fundamentals and playing together as a team were the two main goals Coach Reg Mathews set for his freshman baseball crew during the season. Along the way the squad proved to be a winner also. Bringing a smile to the coach's face for their play during the spring was the strong hitting of catcher Chuck Frazier and the pitching of Tim Bien and Mike Austin. 116 Sports Bill Yehling fires a fast ball past a Spartan batter in the Camelback game on the West High diamond. Curtis, the school record holder in the long jump, added the intermediate hurdles record to his list in a mid-season meet and could probably end up as the state's finest in that event. Wilkerson, a consistent 13 foot vaulter, brought in his share of the points for the thinclads, while Harper had worked his way up to become one of West's best middle-distance runners. Again a young team with only five seniors on the roster, the varsity squad had more balance than in recent years and by mid-season was getting im- proved performances from un- derclassmen James Bonds, John Kopchak, Larry Campbell, Richard Lopez, Harry 'Colter, Jim Agee, Sam Pat- terson, Bob Westbrook, John Leos, and Toby Estrada. The J.V. ranks were very thin this year since many of the sophomores were varsity per- formers, however, Coach Tony Ljubicich could count on Mike Dugan, hurdles, Ron Strayer, weights, Maurice Taborda, distances, and Tony Lopez, pole vault to bring in points for the team. The freshmen, under the wat- chful eye of Coach Ray Maxey, came through with several top performances. David Gonzales and Kevin McKennie came through with excellent times in the middle distance and distance events. Also bringing a smile to the coach's face were the efforts of Norman Gagnon, Ray' Kirkpatrick, Dwight Pat- terson, and Larry Arteaga. 118 Sports - X - fi A - . -t ,. -f -V 'v A ,, .., . - - ,Lf-3 . .K -- Q V f . e , , swf, 5.13. , 1, f , U 1 .,, - f. . . ,.,.,.- L A , . - , f . This year's best distance runners accomplished this by many hours of hard work. Making sure that his cross country squad members stay lean and strong, Coach Dale Torrence puts them through all types of workouts. On a normal day you might find his team running repeats on campus, jogging along the canal bank, on their way back from a hill workout, or taking it easy on the Encanto course as they finish up with their daily twelve miles of practice. The harriers covered all types of terrain in their seven meets last fall and were able to come up with two victories, while the J.V. runners showed promise by finishing 4 and 3. With the team's top three members re- turning, including Harry Colter who finished first for West in all this year's meets, and help from that strong J.V. squad, the 1974 team could give the school the best cross country season since their division cham- pionship in 1969. The people I have met have taught me about the so-called American way of life. I have enjoyed living here and the people who have been so friendly and warm. I hope all of you can have the opportunity to be a student in another country. lt is really a good experience. I am thankful for everything you have done to help me have such a good time here. Ricardo Abaudib Edgardo Camacho I want to thank A.F.S. and West High for giving me the opportunity to come here and learn the English language and American customs. My experience with the people of Arizona and especially of West High has made me more aware of people in other lands. I am very thankful and I hope that I will return to the United States someday because my experience has been so rewarding. Edgardo Camacho David Moreno I have spent most of my life in Lebanon, although I am not a Lebanese citizen. I came to the United States to understand the customs of Americans. I have also tried to make people around me aware of problems of my part of the world. Coming here I have gained a new outlook on the world. A new understanding of why the worId's in this shape. I have also learned to appreciate the qualities of other countries and some of my own country. In conclusion I would like to say, I hope I have given as much as I have received. They started it off with one of the largest marching bands in many years. They marched at all of the home football games during the half- time shows. Marching in the Shriner's Circus Parade, at an All-Star soccer game, and in the Fiesta Bowl Parade were some more of their accomplishments. The band participated in a marching contest at ASU and received a superior rating. Our band probably had the highest number of participants, instrumentally, at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival in February. 142 Organizations BAND COUNCIL: Front row l-r: Karen Daniel, Terri Scrivens Kara Hansen, Leigh Winans, Jeanine L'Ecuyer, Patti Bayless Back row l-r: Karl Moe, Lori Harder, Anne Bettis lPresidenti Wendy Judd, Richard Ramey, Paul Harer, Mike Shellans. Five years ago I stated that I considered it an honor to be appointed as Principal of West High School. During the intervening years, I have felt fortunate at all times to be associated with such an outstanding school, with its cooperative student body, dedicated faculty, and loyal community. Even though I have enioyed my work and realize that there are many challenges ahead, I choose to retire a year early in order to have a change of pace and to devote more time to my family and to other pursuits for which I have never found adequate time. Please accept my personal thanks for all the favors and kindnesses to me during my tenure at West High. My sincere wish is that West High may continue to carry on the tradition of the past and to serve the community in an ever-improving manner. Harry E. White Associate Principal Mr. Larry Kelly Administrative Assistants Mrs. Jeanne Schoolland Mr. Jerome Sie99' To the Students of West High School: The 1973-1974 school year has been one of progress and achievement. Several subject areas are enjoying new or remodeled facilities. These include Art, Photography, Social Studies, English, Home Economics, Health, Special Education, and the Corrective Referral Program. The result of this is that classes are no longer meeting in the Annex. Looking to the future, we will begin plan- ning for the refrigerating of the remain- der of the plant, the demolition of the Annex, and the construction of an ln- structional Materials Center. To both students and faculty, a sincere thank you for your patience and spendid cooperation during the remodeling and' best wishes for a pleasant and rewarding future. Larry K. Kelly Attendance, discipline, sports and other school activities make up just a part of the duties of the Administrative Assistants. There offices are usually crowded with students who feel the need for special guidance in adjusting to life here at West High School. They are very much a part of the traditions of this campus.
