Independent study, one of the goals of Flexible Scheduling, made the vari- ous resource centers necessary. These centers, each covering a major acad- emic area like the Science Resource Center, offered the proper atmosphere and materials for students to follow their own study routine in a specific field. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING West's revolutionary Flexible Scheduling sys- tem brought freedom and independence to its stu- dents. Despite modifications, the results of over- loading the computers which scheduled the stu- dents and maintaining order during the first weeks of school, Flexible Scheduling was a success in its first year at West. Students were given more free- dom to study on their own which, in turn, gave the teachers more time to really teach. Other ad- vantages included homework at school, a greater variety of subjects, and shorter periods. Flexible Scheduling, part of a three year plan, will con- tinue to be modified until the ideal system - plac- ing much of the responsibility on the student - is reached. Mrs. Annie Laurie Buehman and Miss Wilma Sain find the math re- source center a good place to discuss the schedule for their algebra classes. One advantage of the resource centers was the concentration of material covering a single academic field. The Social Studies resource center had a collection of books, pamphlets, and records concerning the social studies - from World History to American Government - which helped teachers with their lectures and students with their assignments.

West students enrolled in more classes, and each class had more students during the 1966-1967 school year. This combination of Flexible Scheduling and an open school policy made huge stacks of textbooks necessary. Resource centers offered large collections of specialized study material in each of the major academic subjects. This new type of study center led to a new type of teacher, resource center personnel. Mrs. Andree Weed, Foreign Language: Mrs. Molly Villemez, English: Mrs. Nita Shultz, Social Studies: Mrs. Ellen Cloyd, Clerical Pool: Mrs. Pat- ricia Dalrymple, Clerical Pool: Mrs. Betty Bothwell, Cleri- Flexible scheduling was ready for West, but was West ready for flexible scheduling? Four days before the first day of school, the math resource center still needed a floor, some paint, some furniture, and school supplies. Worries disappeared, however, as feverish last-minute work readied everything for the students and a new way of school life. cal Pool: Mrs. Terrie Mead, General: Mrs. Catherine Creede, Math: and Mrs. Carol Martin, Science helped stu- dents using the centers in every way possible. They help- ed students find specific materials, issued make-up tests from the various classes, and maintained a quiet atmos- phere for study. Their efforts helped make independent study at West a success.
