It is our sincere hope that this volume will preserve in its pages the many memorable events of the year 1949-1950, and that in future years the STUDENT BODY, the FACULTY, and the PATRONS will recall this first school year as one of the very best. K V ow eat one wed ea 5 WEST HIGH Boys' League members have been quite busy during their initial year. Students remember little about the time they were host to the Arizona Boys' League Convention. Everyone, however, knows how terrifi- cally they started the year with their New Year's Eve West Hi-Ball . A congenial crowd was entertained with music by Phil Brown's band, plus a floor show. ' Latest event was the selling of tickets to the all-school play, Ever Since Eve . After losing the contest to the Girls' League delegates, their penalty was serving said girls at a party in the Cafeteria. Boys' League Council is pictured he-lnw Y,-. BOYS' League Exective Council members consist of Cback rowh Waters, Rainey, Black, Elliott, Rountree, Hoover. dront rowb Kidney, Pomeroy, Spotts, Dunn, Jack- son. and Wessell. EXECUTIVE Council and the Delegate Council of the Boys' League did their best to extend helping hands to each boy at West High. The friendliness of this group has made the atmosphere of West one of congeniality. SOPHOMORE Representative Rainey. President Rountree, Senior Representative Waters, Junior rep- resentative Hoover,Vice-President Elliott, and secretary Wessell pose for a photo. At the left Dean William C. Vaughn, popular Boys' League sponsor, is pictured dur- ing TWIRP week when he became Miss Mary McClellan, Dean of Girls for a day. .vi . s fjfaaaea 5523255 mn' - I f ..:. ,.,,, ..,,..f ...,.... i Q Q 'T' Eiga SW mm W Mm X ...I HEE- sssw was www I I I Y' f' E155 f W5 New SEM W m '1 , xx Nm' 'fi'QEo 1 - N X 92 7 rf, QQ 5 -' 3 151910 , . 3 b 5 'S-'Fi 5. They scored again just before the close of the game, but the try for point was low to give the Thunderbirds their second second straight victory, 13-12. Prescott's class A Badgers came to town a two touchdown favorite and loaded for bear, but they left dragging their tails. In a wild first half. characterized by fumbles and penalties, Prescott built a 13-0 lead. An inspired Maroon and White eleven. led by a Bob Munn passing attack, wouldn't say die though, and went straight to a touchdown at the start of the second half. In the big game of the year, Phoenix Tech spotted the Maroon and White a safety and then rolled up a 25-2 victory, thanks to a last half spurt netting them three touchdowns. Outstanding for the Birds was Wicky Kay, freshman end, who continually threw Tech backs for losses behind the line of scrimmage. THE NEXT week was a different story as the Flock turned back the Amphitheater Panthers 33-31 in a real thriller. The next four games brought bitter defeat to the ever- trying Birds, but added improve- ment was seen in each as Phoenix Union won 63-44, St. Marys edged a close 40-39, Phoenix Tech triumph- ed 44-31, and the tall Glendale Cards took a 51-42 victory. Traveling to Yuma brought the second win of the seaon 43-38, but it was short-lived as the Criminals retaliated the next night 49-37. An- other trip, this one to Prescott, found the Thunderbirds on the short end of another score 44-39, and the Mus- tangs took their second game 63-44, though they had to work a little harder for this one. In the most poorly played game of the season, Tucson administered a bitter pill 59-35, but the very next night the Thunderbirds found vic- tory sweet in a 55-40 swamping of Amphitheater.
