.Winn .L ,,. ,pry . . Fvlrn . Prine ipa S CSSH 6 George Montgomery To the Class of Ianuary. 1953: Go West, Young Man! Mr. Cary of our Art Department, in his delightful farce, has given West Philadelphia High School a sort of personal pro- prietorship to a great slogan of our rapidly expanding nation in the mid-nineteenth century. lust for the sake of the record, it might be worth noting that this famous bit of advice com- monly attributed to Horace Greeley, a forceful New York editor, was not original with him. It first appeared in the Terre Haute, Indiana, Express in 1851, in an article by Iohn Babsone Soule. Mr. Greeley realizing its wisdom seized upon it and used it on many occasions, but was always willing to acknowl- edge the source of his inspiration. It meant many things in those thrilling days: go where there is more room to grow and expand: go where you can stake out a new claim for yourself: go where there are more opportunities and less competition: go Where you can be master of your own fate in the realest sense! The government declared in 1893 that the frontier no longer existed. There was no longer a West, in the physical sense of Greeley's famous advice to which a young man might go. But I should like to point out to you young men and women that there still is, and always will be a West, in the mental and spiritual sense, that still is beckoning bright, eager, industrious, unafraid souls to its El Dorado. You don't need to bewail the fact that you were not born a century ago. There is no single way in which you can turn today that frontiers are not waiting to be pushed back, and are being pushed back from year to year, by patient research, by daring experimentation, by pro- found thinking. Man's greatest achievements and successes lie ahead, not behind. Be thankful that you live in such a tremendous age, and pray daily for the qualities of heart and mind that Will enable you to take an honorable part in the glorious march to a brighter day and better world. Our prayers and best Wishes go with all of you as you Go West! sons and daughters of West Philadelphia High School. Sincerely your friend, GEORGE MONTGOMERY
