' 5 2:5 ,,j g.'f e As we all gather tor the last round-up at the big corral, and the cries of, Go West Young Man, Go West, ring in our ears, tond memories ot the past keep coming to our minds. It is with sincere regret that we ride iorth as pioneers to our chosen fields of endeavor. When we first entered Western as tenderfeet, little did we realize the pleasures that were to be ours. Now that we are seasoned hands, having been patiently molded by our teachers, can we appreciatethe harrowing experiences, the many ioys. the wonderful friends. and the many activities that we have been privileged to be a part of? Our gratitude goes to those who were so patient with our childish whims, and helped us to achieve this glorious day in round-up time. When we have galloped out oi the big corral, and the dust settles in a few years, may this Record oi the class oi Ianuary, 1953, re- kindle your memories of Western. It is our hope that you meet success in your undertakings, as did the pioneers who proudly built this great school forty years ago. 3 Ay L,. Beatrice was musically inclined, and she played the violin very well. Taking an active part in both the band and the orchestra, she will be remembered also for her kind- ness and thoughtiulness. Her loyalty and unselfishness will long be cher- ished in our memories. Remembrance is the rose that blooms, Eternal year by year, Fond memories clinging to our hearts, Keep loved ones ever near. Harvey Gayer His memory is stamped indelibly in the hearts of his entire class. Harvey's friendliness will always burn brightly along the pathway of our lives. Sad and sudden Was the call, Of one so dear and loved by all, A bitter grief, a shock severe, To part with one we held so dear: God loved him too, and thought it best, So took him to eternal rest. Fvlrn . Prine ipa S CSSH 6 George Montgomery To the Class of Ianuary. 1953: Go West, Young Man! Mr. Cary of our Art Department, in his delightful farce, has given West Philadelphia High School a sort of personal pro- prietorship to a great slogan of our rapidly expanding nation in the mid-nineteenth century. lust for the sake of the record, it might be worth noting that this famous bit of advice com- monly attributed to Horace Greeley, a forceful New York editor, was not original with him. It first appeared in the Terre Haute, Indiana, Express in 1851, in an article by Iohn Babsone Soule. Mr. Greeley realizing its wisdom seized upon it and used it on many occasions, but was always willing to acknowl- edge the source of his inspiration. It meant many things in those thrilling days: go where there is more room to grow and expand: go where you can stake out a new claim for yourself: go where there are more opportunities and less competition: go Where you can be master of your own fate in the realest sense! The government declared in 1893 that the frontier no longer existed. There was no longer a West, in the physical sense of Greeley's famous advice to which a young man might go. But I should like to point out to you young men and women that there still is, and always will be a West, in the mental and spiritual sense, that still is beckoning bright, eager, industrious, unafraid souls to its El Dorado. You don't need to bewail the fact that you were not born a century ago. There is no single way in which you can turn today that frontiers are not waiting to be pushed back, and are being pushed back from year to year, by patient research, by daring experimentation, by pro- found thinking. Man's greatest achievements and successes lie ahead, not behind. Be thankful that you live in such a tremendous age, and pray daily for the qualities of heart and mind that Will enable you to take an honorable part in the glorious march to a brighter day and better world. Our prayers and best Wishes go with all of you as you Go West! sons and daughters of West Philadelphia High School. Around these here parts the law is divided into many branches, each of which has its specific job. The Senate makes all the laws, which are carried out by the Board of Directors. Patrol posses arrest the outlaws and haul them into court. These law-breakers are dealt with at our lynching parties or Tribunal meetings. There are twenty pardners who serve on the Board of Directors. These are the President and Vice President of the Citizens' Association, Chairman of the Senatey Attorney-General: Chairman of the Tribunal: Chairman of Carroll Phillips: Chairman of Group Aides: Director of Patrolsg and one cowboy and one cowgirl elected from every class in the school. To facilitate its chores, this group of officers is divided into the following committees: Publicity, Entertainment, Election, Social Serv- ice: Membership, Ushers, Color Guard, Boys' Lunchroorn, Boys' Lava- tory: Girls' Lunchroom, Girls' Lavatoryg interscholastic League, and Education of Students. Before it may become official, the Board must pass on any appro- priation of money or law made by the Senate. Also, the Tribunal and Attorney-General Staff are elected by these people. This term these officers were busily engaged in preparing for the production of Go West Young Man. This necessitated the creation of three new committees: the Program, Ticket, and Clerical Staff. The management of the Novelty Shop is another important function of this group. For the convenience of its students, the school sells pencils, book-covers, felt and paper emblems, pennants, stickers, hats, and polo-shirts in Room 2l5A. For keeping our financial records in such perfect order, Miss Betty McGlathery, school treasurer, certainly deserves credit. Dr. Mabel I-Ialler, the capable sponsor of our Citizens' Association, has worked diligently and earnestly at making Western's Citizens' Association as successful as it is. THERE'S A RULE ABOUT IT 4:5 fm' K, 3 .13 -.gem H I SENATE FRONT ROW: Willis. Admiral. tChairmcml Solow. SECOND ROW: Lewis. Krikoricm, Dobbins, Pelzer. Not in picture: Carole Frascadore The Senate, legislative power of Western, is composed of one repre- sentative from each group. This term, the foreman of our law-making body is Evelyn Admiral, who conducts the Senate meetings, sets forth new issues, and appoints committees. When the foreman is absent, Gerald Smith, vice-foreman, presides at the Senate. Taking minutes at the round-ups, which are held every third Friday, is the difficult task efficiently being done by the secretary, Carole Frascadore. If a matter requiring arbitration occurs, Dr. Mabel Haller, faculty advisor, is called in as a mediator. The functions of the Senate are manifold, and its powers include appropriating money for C. A. purposes, regulating, governing, approv- ing all by-laws, and granting charters to clubs and other school func- tions. All complaints or suggestions made in the group rooms are brought before the Senate for further discussions and consideration. These issues are discussed, decisions are made, and, when necessary, amendments are added to the school constitution. During the spring season and the Christmas season, the Senate solicits voluntary contributions from the student body. The funds re- ceived are given to organizations such as the Red Cross, Red Feather, and March of Dimes. The Christmas donations are given to children's hospitals and children's organizations. The Senate is divided into fourteen committees Working for the improvement of Western. They are: Activities, Attendance, Boys' Lava- tory, Boys' Lunchroom, Budget, Entertainment, Girls' Lavatory, Girls' Lunchroom, PTC, Safety, Servicemen's, Social Service, Student Council, and Ushers. The Senate of W. P. H. S. is a moving force which exists for the benefit of its student body. Its honesty and intelligence in handling Student affairs have branded it as an indispensable part of Western. gs 0 6. 3 ,I f l , t W Vj ' J 2 it nf xlitfl, 'I It.',, all 1 I ang., X iv?- .. --1-rf .. 59 tg fl, t . The nights of December 3, 4, 5, and 6, 1952, brought about a great stampede to our old Bar Ranch which will always be remembered. As the dudes were herded into the West Auditorium, cries of Go West Young Man echoedi throughout these here parts. When the orchestra. under the able leadership of Mr. Maier Hopalong Levin, gave the downbeat, the curtain rose on the biggest, the best, the most extravagant extravaganza ever pro- duced this side of the Schuylkill. This great production was made possible through the efforts of two-gun Selden Cary and our talented belle, Mrs. Vir- ginia Lingentelder, who rounded up folks from all over the school. Combining their maximum efforts to present this completely original musical comedy, Go West Young Man, were Zimhle ,David Quigley ,.L,,,,Philip Deputy ,Harry Tuft ,Gerald Smith, David Shrager i the A Cappella Choir, the Ballet Club, the Orchestra, and a cast picked from the entire student body. Along with this round-up of cowpokes labored the art stait under Mr. Cary's direction. These Wranglers were quick on the draw to create the most unusual and magnif- icent scenery ever viewed on a high school stage. Others who helped make this production a success were the ranch hands, otherwise known as the stage crew, and the federal men, or as they are more commonly called, members of the Board of Directors, who were in charge of tickets and publicity. By the cheers of the audience, who went plumb crazy over each perform- ance, we knew that our ranch had come through with another smashing success to add to all those Western has accumulated in past years. 3 E QQ E: ' W dar- f-- -Af --unr -Y - ' W -.LrML, poriska 5 L M 4 104' - A ..,, ..,,,. ., a . , 7,,1- ,, I .. .. ,, , Qf ' Senior Lettermen Norman Spencer Tony Campolo Sherman Newell Curtiss Iohnson Stanley Berger Ioel Wattenmaker Clarence Garland Ronald Dobbins Stuart Matt Leonard Packel Roger Rucozcy Robert Antrasian 5 31 Robert King Phillip Deputy .fy .. Having five .meets lassoed by the end of October, the boys were looking ahead to the championship on November 5th. Western had placed second in reg- ular season competition. Coach Thomas Campbell's boys repeated themselves in the championships by finishing in the number two slot again. Overbrook was first. The stupendous Wade Washington fin- ished first, as many pre-meet prognosticators had expected. The entire squad performed in the com- mendable manner expected from our school. November 12th brought the Eastern State Invita- tion Track Meet. West Philadelphia proved that they belonged on the top rail, being bested only by West Catholic and Overbrook. Again a cowboy named Mr. Washington finished in the number one position. The season was downright successful. Coach Campbell and the fellows reckon they did their job well. Though Westerns soccer team did not have a very satisfying season, they really fought hard against luck that seemed to be against them. Only one ot our several setbacks was decided by more than two goals. Our graduating seniors contributed a great deal to the team. The fighting spirit and out- standing achievements ot boss cowboys Cap- tains Bob Antrasian and Roger Rakoczy have certainly gone a long way in advancing our team. Both boys had two years ot outstanding first team achievement. Only a tight league and tough luck kept our boys from hitting the top this year. Coach Iones has done considerable re-shuffling of the lineup in order to find a Winning combination tor next season. Our season was climaxed with a seven win record-enough to push us into a not-too- bad sixth place in the fifteen team league. Them thar critters from Central started us on that dang losin' streak and we plumb lost the next five in succession. But at last the Speedboys got on the right side of the fence by defeating Gratz 4 to 1. In- cidentally, this game featured one of the best pitchin' performances of the year on this side of the Delaware trail by Mooch Miller. Vic- tories over Franklin, Dobbins, and Bok brought the Speedboys back in the chips. ln order for our Wranglers to lasso a decent record, it was necessary for us to take all of our last three games, and that we did pard- ners, and by substantial margins, too. The fact that our boys are as tough as prairie grass and gain experience with time makes us sure that the next season will find a strong Winning posse. p - new at S 9 . fff Show me the way tgo home tty 'KPH5 t if 1- 1 lil H 4 521111 i Jw ' SWIMMING FRONT ROW: Henry. FOOTBALL Although Western's football team did not have a successful season, their fighting spirit could not be denied. Hog-tied by injuries, the team never seemed to get started, their public league record being one win, three losses, and two ties. The only bright spots were the 25-6 defeat of Ben Franklin, and a 0-0 tie with a strong Northeast team. Graduating gauchos are Ronny Dobbins, Stanley Berger, Clarence Garland, Curtis Iohnson, Robert King, and Pete Stamos. Ronald Dobbins, perhaps the hardest runner the team had, was instrumental in the defeat of Ben Franklin. Stamos proved an asset to the team and Was, for a 'While, co-captain. Gar- land, Iohnson, King, and Berger were excellent cow-pokes to have on the team. Gloom hovered heavily over our fair school when we lost to our traditional rival, Overbrook, by a close score of 19-18, and to West Catholic by the soaring score of 45-O. . The team once again staked their claim on Wesley Hackman for coach, and Doug Connelly for assistant coach. This year marked the twenty-fifth year of coaching Western's football teams for Wes. During this time, he has turned out many successful teams and his ability as a coach is acknowledged throughout the city. The graduating class wishes Coach Hack- man the best of luck with all his future teams. FRONT ROW: Storey, Seay. Iohnson, Whitacker. Smith, Allen, Iones. Forman, Resnick, Switkin. With the crow ot the rooster we awoke anticipating the won- derful time we knew was in store. At eight-thirty A.M. the Reading Terminal was filled with enthusiastic Westernites, and a little later we were on our way. Remember the train ride to Iersey City? The sun streamed through the windows assur- ing us of fair Weather ahead. At Iersey City we boarded- our ship, The Peter Stuyvesant. We went cruising up the Hudson with the view of the New York skyline as our guide. Then we reached our destination-West Point. There was the rum-tumming of the Army band and we saw a few tackles at scrimmage by the well-known football wizards. A few of our gals practised their Western wahoos when they spotted a cute cadet, but it was to no avail. Before We knew it, the time had come to leave, so we hob- bled-on back to our ship and went down the Hudson to the setting of the orange sun beyond the blue waters.
