The 1973 Junior Prom, taking place on March 23, began with the music of Charlie Dee and his Orchestra. The Prom was chap- eroned by our faculty, and highlighted by the singing of Bro. With entertainment by Al Raymond and his Orchestra, the night was capped off with the crowning of the prom queen, Barbara Tumolo, at midnight. The post prom was held at the Holiday Inn with entertainment by the music of the group, Her- cules. Truely a night to remember. Expectations of the things to come. A time for us to remember. It's the quiet moments we share that count. Senior standout WILLIAM FREDER- ICKSDORF proved that he was not content with being the average student. From his involvement in various activities: Editor of the Blue and White, Community Service Corps, and Student Council, Bill has con- tributed both to his personal development and that of the students around him. Even though much of his time was devoted to extra-curricular happenings, he still man- aged to keep his grades on a high level. Fred plans to major in Urban Studies at Manhattan College. j , , , lf. , , , . . I, ,ff V Spliritj 'hardy work, and determination. When these .swords -,are mentionecl, . 'theff' .X name CARL RICHARDS irnmediately comes' to mind.'Through'his excellenttperformance on the footbaljsfield forlfour, years,Qangi'.ahifsfffif participation 'in other activities, which in- clude a year of managing the Basketball team, working'on-ftheafaff of the Blue and White, Student Council, Track, and helping make the Spirit Committee a workable or- ganzation, Carl has shown the qualities of a true West Catholic Student. His mag- netic personality has won Carl many friends throughout his four year stay at West. Carl plans to attend the Coast Guard Academy and major in Oceanography or Aviation. A person who has accomplished a great deal both personally, and for West Catholic without a lot of fanfare is PAUL MCLAUGI-ILIN. Serving as Vice-President of the Student Council, and playing Football, Soccer, and Golf has earned Paul the re- spect of his classmates and teachers. From freshman year to senior year Paul was totally West Catholic, and it will be a while until the school will house a student like him again. Paul also found time to place high in the senior class and plans to enter 'the printing business. WILLIAM ROMANELLI has mixed his scholastic abilities and athletic abilities with equal enthusiasm. While Bill is ranked high scholastically, his athletic ability can only be described as explosive. Bill's football and basketball records are equally im- pressive. Though undecided as to which college to attend, Bill plans to major in Special Education. When you think of determination and courage you naturally think of RALPH MORRIS. These characteristics have helped Ralph become the 1973 Travers' Award re- cipient. He is also a four year member of the Track Team and was an All-Catholic in Indoor Track in his junior and senior years Besides track Ralph was on the Cross Country team in his junior and senior years and lettered both years. He also partici- pated in Freshman Football, was in the C.S.C., and the newly formed Senior Re- treat Committee. Despite being so involved in West he stlil managed a high academic ranking, being ranked in the fourth of his class. After graduation Fialph plans to go to either Kent State or Penn. The combination of above average achievement in academics, excellence in athletics, and the ability to get along with everybody is one found all too rarely these days. ROBERT WARD was the person to look to at West to find it. Bob excelled in Football, where he was a varsity starter since sophomore year, and Basketball. where his presence on the court helped the Burrs through many games. His sharp sense of competition, and his willingness to help his teammates earned Bob the respect of the student body and faculty. Bob has constantly received honors and plans to major in Secondary-Education. The one word to describe JOSEPH DOUGHERTY is champion. Even as a three year member of the Crew Team, President of the Spirit Committee, and constant participant in intramurals, he has not tattered in his concentration on academic studies. Twice Joe has rowed to a National Championship. An untiring sense of dedi- cation and the drive for success have characterized his high school years. His hard work and perseverance are destined to catapult him to success in his future career in Art. A Senior Standout is more than just an academic scholar. He is a person in- volved beyond ordinary activities. THOMAS DOUGHEHTY is such a student. ln his four years at West Tom has participated in three varsity sports: Football, Baseball, and Basketball, combining skill with the desire to excel. Tom plans to continue his career in sports at the Philadelphia College of Textile and Science where he plans to major in business administration. Beneath the calm, unassuming manner of JAMES COYNE lies a demand for achievement. His concern for his fellow students makes Jim one of the few that meets the demand of Senior Standout . Being active in Student Council, Blue and White, West Catholic News, Spirit Com- mittee, World Affairs, Track, and a member of the Football team has not taken away from his academics, ranking in the top 20 in his class. Jim has gone through twelve years of school without missing a day, and will further his goal at the University of Notre Dame. The possession ot a multi-faceted personality is an asset to which few people can ascribe. JAMES FORD is one of these. He has proven his abilities by his participa- tion in Football, Track, Intramurals, Student Officers, and as elected Treasurer to the Student Council a position he filled with honor and integrity. His determination and perseverance have led him to excel in academics, being in the top third of his class. Jim plans to attend either Penn State or West Chester after graduation, l A member of the National Honor So- ciety for two years, ROBERT MCNAMARA has achieved first honors consistently at West. ln addition he was a member of the Soccer Team since Freshman year, and Captain of the Swim Team. His zest for life and humorous personality make him one of the best known students in the class ot '74, Bob plans to major in Pre-Med at La Salle College. As well as being devoted to his studies, MICHAEL KEARNEY also manages to contribute a great deal of time towards the school paper. A member of the National Honor Society, Mike has maintained an academic average high enough to place him as one of the top ten students of the senior class. Mike is an easy going stu- dent, and is well liked by both his peers and teachers. Looking forward to a career in law, Mike plans on attending either Penn State or La Salle College. l Zi. VINCENT PRUDENTE has labored for long, diligent hours in order to become an academic standout at West. Although Vince centered most of his attention on the academic aspects of school, and considers extra-curricular activities only after his studies have been completed, he still found time to be a member of the Matheletes, Russian Club, and National Honor Society. After graduation Vince plans to attend La Salle College. DANIEL MCDEVITT is a name well known to the West Catholic Community. Elected Senior Senator, Dan devoted most of his time to the interests of others. Writing for the West News, and a member ot the Track Team, Dan still found time for academics which placed him in the top ten of his class. Dan is undecided about his future plans. i i There are those who possess such confidence and dynamic personalities that they set themselves apart, without much flourish. THOMAS OUINN is one of these. Although not actively involved in extra- curricular activities, he has dedicated him- self to West through his studies. Tom has consistently placed in the top ten in aca- demics and plans to major in Business- Finance at Penn State after graduation. Noted for his seemingly calm and easy-going air, FRANK SANTISI has ex- celled in academics during his tour years at West. Frank is a member of the Bowling team, Vice-President of the National Honor Society, Matheletes, Student Council, and Intramural sports. He is an exceptional leader and is very popular among the stu- dents. His future plans include attending Penn State where he intends to major in accounting. Ranking at the top of his class in academics WILLIAM TRAFKA has been ad- mired by the faculty and envied by his classmates. Bill is especially noted as an exceptional organist and pianist. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Matheletes, and also accompanies the West Catholic Boys' Chorus. He has con- ducted the band on several occasions, and has provided piano accompaniment for all the plays and special performances. Bill has achieved the disinctive honor of rank- ing first in his senior class. After gradua- tion he plans to attend the Juilliard School of Music. K l t As President of the World Affairs Council, President of the National Honor Society, editor of the West Catholic News, manager of the Crew team, and member of the Blue and White staff, JOHN DE- LANEY still considers his academic studies as number one on his long list. John has the ability to accept responsibility and is always able to get the job done and done well. Very few would be able to control situations as well as John does. John plans to further his education at either Notre Dame or La Salle college. As sports editor of the News, contri- butor to the Blue and White, a member of the National Honor Society, and a con- sistent scorer in Mathelete competition, HOWARD MCCOACH was a fixture on the First Honor Ftoll and ranked third in the class of 1974. His friendly manner and boundless optimism have impressed all who have had the pleasure of knowing him, He hopes to make great use of his outstanding intelligence as he continues his education on the path to his life-long goal of becoming a pediatrician. The age-old stereotype of the intelli- gent student as a stodgy, self-centered nobody is now refuted in the person of JOHN RESNICK. Whether you query him on a problem in physics or the newest album from Santana his answer will be equally informative as well as interesting. His personality manifests itself in his partic- ipation inthe Natonal Honor Socety and as- a member of West's golf team. He is possessed with a raw cynicism that leads one to believe that his buoyancy will never be deflated, He plans to attend Clark Uni- versity after graduation. ln order for institution to survive V v With a boulder on my shoulder, ' feelin' kind of older l tripped s it must constantly undergo change. VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1973 Football team was one of great potential and high hopes. One ingredient missing in they Burrs' drive to the Champion- ship was the big play. An outstanding feature of this year's team was the defense, which proved to be the best in the Catholic League, by allowing a mere fifty points to the opposi- tion. Also, West's offense proved to be an ex- plosive unit, totaling one hundred and fifty points, second only to Cardinal 0'Hara. The highpoint of the season was when the Burrs traveled to Franklin Field to be a part of the first double header night game in Catholic League history. This event was further en- hanced when West defeated its arch-rival, St. James, for the first time in seven years, by a score of 27-0. The Burrs also traveled to Washington, D. C., and defeated a highly ranked St. John's team, 12-0. These moments capped an overall successful season, one l that was enjoyable to both the team and their loyal supporters. This statement is no exaggeration and our library has provided it. With the ex- pert assistance of Mrs. Mary Skelton, Sister Roberta and library aides, students were shown were to find the information needed for research papers, tests, and personal knowledge. In cooperation with the media center, operated by Bro. Lawrence Colhocker, the library housed films, projectors, phonographs and various other audio-visual equipment for student use. Moderation by Mr. James Brady, along with numerous faculty assistants, insured the smooth operation of the program. Activities added to the Intramural Pro- gram this year were: ping-pong, and volley- ball, to complement the usual Intramural ac- tivities. ADMINISTRATION Brother Richard Kestler came to West for the position of Principal from Hudson Catholic High in Jersey City. Brother Richard holds a B.A. in Mathe- matics from La Salle College, and has at- tended Fordham University. His philosophy for West Catholic is his belief in preaching the message of Christ by dealing fairly with the students' pursuit of ex- cellence be it the classroom, field, or stage. Brother looks forward to seeing West Catho- lic grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. Left: Bro. Richard Kestler, Principal. Below left: Bro. Their methods are completely different from other schools, taking the student for what he is and not trying to change him, hoping the student will be willing to better himself. His respect for the student, and his opinion, is greatly appreciated and therefore is returned by the student. We only wish that other students could experience what a West Catholic student witnesses: an understanding adult other than his par- ents, to tell his problems to.
