Its arrival, with all its attendant happiness. causes us to look back over the long chain of events which reach their happy culmination today. We feel that our goal has been reached by the expenditure of sacrifice on the part of our parents and of ourselves. We know, however. that our deepest indebtedness is due our parents. to whom. under God. we have received the gift of life and the fullest development of that life in the thoroughness of a Catholic Education. This complete training was made possible by the joint sacrifices of that noble man and woman we lovingly term parents. With a deep sense of our obligation to be ever grateful for the opportunity they so generously provided and with a sincere promise to keep ever before us their ennobling example of sacrifice, we dedicate this yearbook to our Parents. ,. The last senior activity is the recitation of the pledge to the Sacred Heart. At the beginning of the football games the players ask the aid of the Sacred Heart. First Fridays the classes recite the pledge to the Sacred Heart, asking assistance during the month and pardon for any offenses committed. We rely on the Sacred Heart to aid us in our school work. our recreation periods and our athletic endeavors. for we know that faith in Him will make us better men. Let's not forget that pledge after graduation. Q.. 1? il V - 'X Nix .f S' Fffgf. K K 2 :'.4x-xx pgrx Q , nh '31 x r - T-is 3.x - .fvknh SC.. 'ries' . Q X.. Some of us chose the Arts Course in order to pre- pare ourselves for a Profes- sional Career, Others, intend- ing to enter the Medical or En- gineering profession, or to pur- sue a general scientific course in college, were prepared in the Science Course. Those attracted to the business world selected the Commercial Course, in which they received a well- rounded training for the busi- ness world. Few will forget that sunny September when they first tread the corridors and stairs of West Cath- olic and avowed their determination to uphold, to the best of their ability, the traditions of their new alma mater. Now with a year behind them they feel like old grads. At first, taken back by the diversity of sub- jects and activities, they later plunged enthusi- astically until hardly a club was without its Freshman representatives. Nor has this class of 45 reason to be ashamed of its scholastic rec- ord, rather, it has set a target at which future Frosh classes may well aim. A versatile class, these seniors of 45 did not confine their efforts to studying alone but also took an active part in athletics. - :fam W ms ' 1 Y THA . -1 ,ENN - W 1 l '- ' 'f , 'B' QW f 1 , if N 2 A kg sw TW 4' em, f .' vw, , . r M.,,N, 4 Q?ivE?fg ' i7 ':-w-w-'....- .. This season the student body con- tributed a larger share to the activities than they usually did but the Dramatic Club still bore the brunt of the effort and received the lion's share of the praise. The individual students made their bids for fame as they took part in numerous playlets and impersonations presented during assembly programs. These programs were produced by each home-room and were greatly appreciated by all who had witnessed them. Many poten- tial greats in the dramatic field were also uncovered by these most amateurish programs. As the end of Ianuary approached, work in all departments had become a feverish race against time. However, all concerned rose to the occasion and successfully met the demands made on them and the play, George Wash- irigton Slept Here, went down as one of the greatest Senior stage productions in West Catholic's history. ,,f -if 52 x 'L - W' fig E33 w V N' 'L 4 12 V . -. 1 -S: ,- . 4, '.,. - 39 ' , '-F '. 11: r 4 .AH --- . ,V . ,Y 5 V YE! - V llflv ' a!f'a' ,',- 'Lis rv' ' 'Wu' ,ygizp I in gl M 'Flaws'-9 I .hh 'H' if X ,b fHfSlAl3f The title of our twentieth Senior Play, l'George Washington Slept Here, presents a misleading idea of this annual entertainment. During the progress of the play, the fact came to light that Washington never had slept there, and certainly no one in the audience had any inclination toward slumber after the opening curtain. The stimulating action began with Newton Fullers purchase of a dilapidated Pennsylvania farmhouse while laboring under the delusion that Washington had once slept there. Artists express temperament in clay. chalk and oil. After a lapse of three years, the Art Club began to function again. The accomplishments were well deserving of commendation. Lectures on how to draw posters, how to space letters were well attended. About Christmas time new members began adding their names to the role, which increased from thirteen to twenty. The great influx was due mainly to the work done in clay modeling and plaster work. Thus the name Art Club disappeared and the new name, Arts and Crafts Club, replaced it. West Catholic started the 1941 football sea- son with two regulars from 1940 back, Paul Lhulier and Iohnny Willis, The outlook was none too bright and the shadow of a great 1940 team still hung over the school. lt Wasn't long, however, before students began asking them- selves, lust what can we do this fall? Cer- tainly we could only guess and wait for the opening game on September 27th at Southern Highs new stadium. This provided additional interest because West was,out to avenge 1940's Southern triumph. This brings us up to the opening game of the season and the beginning of West Catholic's 10-game undefeated winning streak. West Catholic. 7: Southern. U. West Catholic received the opening kickoff and after losing the ball to Southern they took it the second time and drove 77 yards for a score. With Iohnny.Wi1lis and Whizzer White alternating the ball-carrying chores it took the Burrs only seven plays to reach pay dirt. lohn- ny Willis took the ball over on a deceptive re- verse. Willis also booted the extra point. West Catholic. 14: St. Thomas More. 6. The hottest day of the season found the Burrs failing to open up until they found them- selves behind, 6 to O, late in the second period. The first quarter featured a punting duel be- tween Pat Connors and lack O'Connor. Whiz White intercepted a Green and Gold aerial and from the Burrs' forty and a long pass, Willis to Kane, brought the ball to the Tommies' nine- yard stripe. Willis then tossed another one, this time to Donaghy, for a second score. West Catholic, 20: North Catholic. 0. ln their second league match the Burrs swamped a very poorly manned North Cath- olic. Only two plays had elapsed when Kelly, the Falcon left halfback, tried a quick kick. Tom Mannion broke through and blocked the kick and Ioe Davis recovered on the two. Willis galloped over for the Burrs' second score on the next play. Willis also added his second extra point of the day. On a neat twenty-one yard dash, Leo Dilloi. lugged the ball to North's two. Willis then bat- tered his way over for the Burrs' final score. West Catholic, 19: Catholic High. 6. 25,000 spirited fans witnessed one of the wildest and wooliest games ever played on the vivid green turf of Municipal Stadium when the Blue and White grid machine crushed Catholic High, 19 to 6. The Burrs registered their fifth consecutive league win when they downed the Purple and Gold to hold first place in the Catholic loop. Davis, White, cmd Kenney pause on faculty steps. With Willis and Dillon carrying the brunt of the Burr drive, West moved the ball to the two-yard marker. From there Leo Dillon went over for six points. Willis' try for extra point was wide. After bringing-the kickoff back to their own forty-five, Catholic began a sustained drive covering fifty-six yards for their only score. With lim Friel slinging passes all over the field, the Cahillites finally tallied their six points when left-end Conlon was on the receiving end of one of the passes in the end zone. Our second touchdown was scored by Leo Dillon who took a reverse from Willis, and with Frank Kane doing some splendid blocking, circled the left end for another six points. Out to avenge their only defeat of last year, the Burrs swamped La Salle by the score of 21 to 6. West scored first on a plunge from the four- yard line by co-captain Iohnny Willis, who also added the extra point. On only three plays after West kicked off, the Little Explorers sent Iohnny McMenamin around left end for a 33-yard touchdown romp. The try for extra point was blocked. A beautiful 32-yard scamper by Leo Dillon to La Salle's 6, a five-yard penalty and another plunge by Dillon gave the Burrs their second score. Willis again converted. In the final frame, Pat Connors intercepted one of Iohn Mlodzianowski's aerials and trotted 19 yards into pay dirt. Willis converted for the third consecutive time. West Catholic. 13: South Catholic. 0. A tough South Catholic eleven was the fourth straight victim of a championship bound West Catholic team. lt was a quick scoring play in the opening period which really spelled their defeat. On eleven plays after the kickoff, West had scored. After an exchange of punts, Lionel Kenny recovered a Pirate fumble on South's 15-yard line. Willis faded to pass and finding -nm- QQ P no receiver, tucked the ball under his arm and scampered into pay dirt. Time and time again the McAfee brothers, loe and lim, bat- tered the Burr forward wall in a desperate attempt to score, and each time they were beaten back by a determined West Catholic eleven. lt was a pass interception by Frank Temple that stopped the first threat. A stubborn line took care of the second, and a blocked kick by Tom Mannion gave the Blue and White their only breathing spell. West Catholic.. 13: St. Ioseph's, 12. West Catholic has done it again. This tirne, by eking out a 13 to 12 victory over the Hawk- lets, we have gained another Catholic league championship. Pre-game pep talk by Coaches Dougherty and Brennan. West started early, and on a sensational play, a long pass from Willis to Bradley, netted 6 points. Capt. Willis' placement was wide of the mark. Late in the third period Pat Connors inter- cepted a Hawk pass and ran thirty-three yards to the two-yard stripe. Reds Dillon carried to pay dirt from the five and I. Willis made the winning point by converting the kick. The St. loe's offensive clicked in the fourth quarter and with Welsh running and McTamney pass- ing, they scored twice. But due to the great playing of Co-Capt. Lhulier, who blocked both extra point attempts, their attack was success- fully repulsed. West Catholic, 0: West Philadelphia, 0. Before 43,000 unenthusiastic fans, West dead- locked Western for the City Championship. The 49th Streeters' offensive was almost en- tirely blocked and the game was played de- fensively by both teams. The Burrs started off slowly and didn't get clicking during the whole game. The Burrs turned on the razzle-dazzle and scored on the fifth play, and collected 3 other 6-pointers in the first half. The Burrs were superlative, The running attack was sensation- al. Dillon was exceptional with 3 touchdowns and several pass interceptions to his credit. Willis passed to Kane for one touchdown, Pat Connors exhibited wonderful broken field run- ning with a 35-yard gallop on an intercepted pass. Congratulations are due to the whole team for that wonderful afternoon's work. Diminutive forward Slugger O'Hal- loran hit the cords from the lloor tour times and Williams passes to Leonard in annual game with West Philly. Slugger steals ball from Prep. This unusual bit of action oc- curred in the game with Sal- esianum. 7-5 at the quarter and l2-9 at the halt, Beginf ning the second half North scored on a set shot by Kuntz to boost their lead at the end of the third period to l7-l3. The lireworks started f McEnroe sank a layfup to bring West within two points ot North. Then two shots tapped in by Mac tied the score, and West went ahead l9-17, With approximately one minute remainf ing West's Captain stole the ball and dribbled half the length of the tloor to clinch the game. West's chances hit a snag when they trav- eled to Wilmington and lost to the Sallies in the last couple of minutes 29-25. West led most of the game but the Sallies got hot in the last quarter and won by four points. W. C. returned to winning ways by trounc- ing St. Ioe's 31-16 in the next game, As in the first game the little forward O'Halloran was high scorer. West won a surprise victory over St. Thomas More 32-28. This game, as was the first game with them, was a nip and tuck affair, St. Thomas leading most of the game. However, West went ahead 29-28 on two field goals by Dougherty. Then Keogh sank a technical foul with but a half minute to go to clinch the game. An extra field goal was added for good meas- ure by the ever-present Dougherty. West's fighting team next downed South Catholic Pirates 27-25. Like the game with the Golden Bears, West trailed to the last quarter. Captain Keogh pulled West through to win 27-25. Keogh was the outstanding man in this game scoring l-4 points. By winning the game West tied for fourth place with North Catholic. It was decided to play off the tie in the Kenny Gym the night after the South Catholic game. i i i A t I'll bet 'Doc' comes up with the ball. With two minutes remain- ing and the score against West 29-26, Ioe Dougherty, who scored 16 points in the game, made two field goals to put West ahead 30-29. Drawing South Catholic as the first oppo- nent in the Shaughnessy play-offs, West ended l the Pirates' three-year reign as Basketball Champions by winning 35-29. West led the whole game except for one moment in the third quarter when Charles Hannan flipped in a field goal to put South ahead l8-l7. How- ever, West gradually pulled away in the final quarter. For almost two decades Mr. Glascott turned out winning track squads and in 16 of those years West Catholic won the Catholic League championship. Many fine stars have been developed by lack, notably, Iohnny Maher, Iohnny Di Carlo, Frank McKernan, Harry Keefrider and many others. This year our track squad is being coached by Brother D. Iohn, our Athletic Director. Assisting him is Hughie Bracken, who will have charge of the Dillon out in front again. 0 0 0 0 0 I- I M ' B field events. The 1942 outlook is promising in- deed, with many of last year's stars returning. Among them Captain Eddie Mirra, Leo Dillon, Frank Spence, Chris Murphy, Bernie Dieckhaus and many others. INDOOR This year's indoor season was a brief one. West participated in only two meets, the Penn A. C. and the Washington meet. The Burrs fin- ished second in the former meet. St. Thomas More was the surprise team that finished first. Down at Washington the Burrs did very well, That's putting your loot in it right. Pete. West garnered sixteen points. At Wash- ington our mile relay team took first place. If the showing in this meet was any indication of any success this year's prospects the out: door season should be a great one. Leo Dillon and Bernard Dieckhaus were both impressive. MILE This year the candidates for the mile are Bob Bohan and Fred Harmer. There are also two promising Iuniors, Robinson and O'Del1. Charles McCreary, who ran the mile last year, SIAMI A has been switched to the half-mile. Taborelli and McCreary ran the mile in Washington, fin- ishing sixth. MILE RELAY ln recent years West Catholic has always had a crack mile relay team. In fact a few years ago West's mile relay team, then com- posed of Keefrieder, Dunbar, Di Carlo, and McCarthy, came within a half-second of tying the world's record. The prospects are bright, for in comparing the time of different teams in indoor meets during the past winter, we find that West's team has the fastest time. Undoubtedly West will get a great deal of competition, especially from North Catholic and St. Thomas More. However, with the West Catholic spirit behind them, these boys should give an excellent account of themselves. FIELD EVENTS The chances of our winning the Catholic League this year are directly dependent on how our field men come through. In the Col- lingswood meet our field men scored by six and a half points compared to the lerseyites' forty-seven and a half points. From this can be clearly seen the responsibility resting on the shoulders ot our veterans, Dieckhaus, Tuppeny, Dillon, and McCreary and our new men, Giusti, Buinnio, Daniels, White, Murdoch, O'Henry, Flad, and the Dunn boys. With so much green material, our coaches, Brother D. Iohn and l-lugh Bracken, have guite a job, but we think they are capable and that they can raise these prospects into championship calibre. SPRINTS West Catholic has always been known for its excellent sprinters and 1942 was no excep- tion. Leo Dillon, last year's sprint king, retained that title by again capturing the l00 and 22O. However, this was by no means a one- man team. Charles Agnew, Tom McGrath, Lou Guisti, Bob Manifold, Lionel Kenny and George Woods, a sophomore, were making it hard for all opponents. With Bernie Dieckhaus leading the way, until he fractured his ankle, they were unbeatable. lack l-larrington, Bill Dunn, lim Tuppeny and Tom McGrath all took turns in showing what good hurdlers are made of. Tuppeny and Harrington each placed second in the Collingswood meet, The loss of Dieckf haus was sadly felt, as his work in the outdoor season was expected to surpass his excellent job done during the indoor season. This year we entertain St. Thomas More, Roman Catholic, Penn Charter, 'Central, St. Ioseph's and Ger- mantown on our familiar courts. With three returning Varsity letter-men the squad lived up in this way: Captain Anderson, Wermuth, Lukens, Duscavitch, Althouse, Ha- genbach and Kelly. The two seniors, Andy Anderson and lim Lukens, and the two man- agers, Frank Perna and Ted Lewis, are seniors, the others are juniors. The team began tuning up as soon as the courts were put into shape under the watchful eye of the moderator and coach, Brother Michael. S 'I' R I K E ' To tfie Victor Belongs the Spoilsf' This old adage prevailed at West Catholic, when on March 19th the West Catholic bowling team dropped the North Catholic bowling team from a two-year reign atop the Catholic League. North, champions of the Catholic League for the past two seasons, needed only one more championship in order to gain permanent pos- session of the M. A. Bruder Trophy. lt was the first time in the four years' history of the league that a West Catholic bowling team has won the championship. At the beginning of the race, West showed little promise of the form it was to display later on. At the end of the first halffthe stand- ings showed West in second place, with North finishing first. With the opening of the second half, West dropped its first match to the red- hot North team and things didn't look any too bright for West. But beginning with the second match, and continuing to the end of the race, West won every match, This left the standings in a tie, North with the first-half honors and West with the second-half honors. ln the cham- pionship match, West defeated North by 31 pins. The team consisted of lim Mahoney, the only holdover from last year's team, Ioe Barnes, Hugh Meehan, l-larry Vanderslice, Ioe Dick and I. Murphy, the only funior on the team. Robert Walcovey was the teams manager. Mahoney was the standout bowler on the team, and won the individual scoring honors in the league with an average of l8O. Sweaters were awarded to the members of the team for their splendid record, and for fin- ishing second in the state tournament at Har- risburg, team members were awarded medals. Maybe you're luckier and eat at 11:10 or 11:55 or you might be on the starvation shift and have to wait till 12:40, but no matter when you 'eat we'll bet that lunch is your favorite period. Have you ever heard of anyone being late for lunch? The crowds are on the stairs almost before the bell rings. They lean against the shelves and wisecrack among themselves managing, somehow, to eat at the same time. When that handbell is rung the stream on the campus. And there s always room for a few Did you say vanilla? queries more Mrs. Walsh. .ffl 011 tAe HITEIQLL5 For years and years the outlet for West Catholics pent-up energy has been the cam- pus. Many seasoned athletes have come from our well-kept tennis courts, football field, track and handball courts. All these athletes, whether good or bad, have loved the campus, which gave them the opportunity to show their skill. During every season of the year students at West participate in sports. ln the fall, football takes the spotlight, and every afternoon the squad perspires and grinds until twilight, not for the meager glory they get on Saturday after- noon, but because they love their school, their campus and all that it stands for, During the winter when the field is covered with ice and water, the handball enthusiasts and after the jumperfclad trackmen defy the elements to fur- ther their own enjoyment and also the athletic name of West Catholic. When the snow melts, the lunch periods again invade the field and the track season starts in full swing. Early spring, too, sees the netmen preparing for their coming schedule, The highlight of the campus is the statue of Christ in front of the Chapel. Each stu- dent passes that edifice many times during the day and many have formed the praiseworthy habit of repeating to themselves the inscription carved on the pedestal: Sacred Heart of Iesus, I place my trust in Thee. The much visited chapel is the inspiration of our students, both spiritually and athletically. I. The early birds get the best perch. 2. I , , s 0, G 'I r 2 For many, many years West Catholics gym has been working on a seven-day week. Day after day throughout the year it is in con- stant use. As one squad ends one sporting ses- sion and moves out, another group, ready for another sporting session, is ready to take their place. The sport which brings more students into participation is Intramural Basketball. Each class takes part and the games are played con- tinually for almost two months during the win- ter season. Much rivalry and competition is displayed, and some valuable talent discovered in each team, from Freshman to Senior, seems to have a gunner, who shoots from all over the floor, a rather chubby boy who always yells his head off, and the captain, who runs around calling for time out, technical fouls, and anything else that might prove fruitful for his quintet. Four years of class basketball we can recall many amusing happenings. During our Sopho- more year Frank McNelis rushing into the game for dear old Soph. got the ball and dribbled the whole length of the court and was just about to lay up his shot when he heard his teammates shouting, he was in front of the wrong basket. However, no damage was done, and Soph. H pushed aside all opposition to win the championship. This year, in a game between SSE. and SCG., the E boys got the ball at the second half and started for their basket. lt was not until they had taken five shots, and Bob Flad had finally dropped one, that they discovered they had forgotten to change baskets. With so many fellows taking part in sports in and around our gymnasium, West Catholic can really be said to be taking an active part in Building America. Maybe we don't realize how fortunate we are in having an athletic field adjoining our school buildings. On this field almost every student that attends West Catholic spends part of his time. To a Freshman it is the great place where the varsity football team practices. To the other students it is the place where they try to achieve fame in either football, crew or track. lt is true that almost every student tries out for something during his stay at West. ln the fall when we return to school we find the playing field a green plain of waving grass. This does not last long because the football team is soon hard at practice and the grass disappears to become a hard turf. Here are put in the practice sessions which help them to keep up the famous brawn at West Catholic. ln the Spring, along with the football prac- tice, comes the track, which achieved such fame for West which has never been equaled in any other sport. Also the crew coach has an idea that if the boys can keep up a good pace on the cinders they might make good oarsmen. So, consequently they have to show him that they have good wind. This little outline shows how essential the field is to our dthletes. cred of gun . v i 7 .. 5 ,l In t N 'VID f -a ' U ' 1' ga- .nf 0,1 - F.. 5.418111- L N , 4 15' K , .. . ., -ua -gh ' -1932 ,Q 4- ff Q.: f W .W , 5 Lxkrh lm . The sterling silver burr favors and the silver and blue program depicted West's Silver Iubilee. This year the Senior Committee is busily preparing for the 1942 Senior Prom. The date is May 22, the place is the Brookline Country Club. Ioey Kearns and his boys have been engaged to supply the evening with sweet danceable numbers sprinkled liberally with their own specials The favor chosen for this year is an attractive key which everyone will want to keep and the program is a miniature duplicate of the 1942 BLUE AND WHITE cover. By the time this is read the 1942 Senior Prom will be a thing of the past. This month was also the occasion ot the Alumni Rally. The rally, with jovial Frank Kelly at the mike, many coaches of rival teams, a bunch of Penn's pig- skin toters and many other celebrities from the sporting world made this Roman Catho- lic Rally a memorable event. At the insistence of many students a series ot dances was sponsored by the Alumni and held in the Gym. When Will Bradley's Orches- tra appeared lor the Alumni, the dancers apparently didn't get enough music because a return engagement jammed in an even larger crowd. The St. Patricks Dance had the strains of the Charlie Bar- nett aggregation aiding the celebration of the Wearing of the green. On a more solemn occasion the Alumni and a number of seniors made a week-end re- treat at St. loseph's-in-the-Hills. Here meditation, prayer and visits to the Most Blessed Sac- rament brought all to a closer appreciation of holy religion, As a fitting close to a suc- cessful season, the Alumna had the top bands in the past, in- cluding those ot Hal Kemp and Gene Krupa, but this year- Ah!-this year We had the one and only Tommy Dorsey!
