The mathematics teacher is to the beginning mathematics student as the seasoned guide is to the tenderfoot in the woods. Neither the beginning mathematics student nor the tenderfoot can interpret the signs that are readily available until the teacher or guide points them out. An important part of mathematical training is to make one aware of the clues that are present, their significance, and finally, their interpretation as applied to that particular situation. The ability to apply one’s knowledge requires that all necessary information has been carefully filed in one’s mind, in an orderly fashion, so that it can be carefully called upon. It also implies that information must be arranged so that one knows what tasks the various mathematical tools are designed to perform. Finally, the procedures must have been practiced until they become mastered and hence can be done reasonably free of careless errors. In conclusion, as part of a student's study habits, he ought to ask himself, What was it that I didn’t see, but that was really there to be seen, or what was it that I didn't know, but that 1 ought to have known? Thoreau stated we must keep in mind the discipline of looking always at what is to be seen. Rolin G. RANDY BITTMAN “cQue? ALVIN LCIBINER • Department Chairperson !Que barbaridad! Will you ever use the language you studied for two, three, four, or even five years? No one can really say, but for some of you it may become a distinct adjunct to your career. Others of you may know the special thrill of travel- ling in a country where the language is spoken and communicating with the people. Still others may be limited to ordering a meal in a New York restaurant and impressing your dinner guests with a few chosen words in the lingo”. No matter how limited or extensive your future use of the language may be • can you ever forget those cultural enrichment experiences , those special holiday foods and the experiments in foreign cooking, sometimes felicitous and other times disasterous? You can certainly remember the field trips, the club meetings, induction ceremonies, and Foreign Language Weeks. Some- day you may realize that a lot more was going on in those language classes than you’d thought: history, geography, music, art - some will say they first learned English grammar there! No matter what the future holds for you, each of your language teachers wish you: Bonne chance, Buone fortuna, and Buena suerte!
