LANGUAGE ARTS If we human beings deserve at all the epithet “successful , it is because we are the earth-dwellers who have fought a better fight than other species on our planet against the destructive forces of time and distance. Our victories have been won (and our defeats assuaged) largely through our powers of communication. The most conclusive evidence of our triumphs over time and space: civilization itself with its Tokyos and hew Yorks, its Voyager I’s and M’s, its Picassos and its Shakespeares is a testimony to the power of our communication to transcend the centuries and the miles that separate one human from another. The study of English is the study of the power of words to draw people together and multiply their force. The precision and logic of expository prose enable us to share technical knowledge and to organize our social endeavors so that roads, cities, and laws may come into being. Through fiction, poetry, and drama, we experience the language of emotion and learn appropriate responses to that great range of aesthetic, religious, and intimate experience that high civilization requires. At its best, the study of English attunes us to that quiet chorus of civilized voices that speak from the vanished past, from the nooks and crannies of the present, and from the best part of our own minds. At its best, the study of English attunes us to those voices and enables us to add our own to that quiet chorus, which now resounds through the millenia and between the stars, and which will continue to sound only so long as we retain the ability to listen, understand and speak, read, comprehend, and write.
