The Congress sponsored its annual magazine drive and then ran a very successful holiday toy drive for a nearby orphanage. The Junior and Sophomore class off- icers began administrations aimed at preparation for future years. The sopho- mores spent much time raising funds for later programs. The burden of the prom, however, rested on the shoulders of the junior officers who sponsored successful dances and fundraisers. The most im- portant function of these students was to bring out a sense of pride among their classmates and a desire to aid in the pro- grams at Mountain. They met the chal- lenges head on and set the pace for an exciting year. The Spanish Honor Society is dedi- cated to the promoting of interest in the Spanish language and the culture of the countries where the language is spoken. Honor students are invited to join upon the recommendation of their Spanish teachers. The organization sponsored Moun- tain’s first two carnivals to raise money for a school in Ecuador and a charity for Hispanics in Newark. It publishes a newspaper and sponsors a banquet yearly for inductees. This year the society participated in the Bicentennial celebration by dedicat- ing a day to our ethnic heritages, placing emphasis on the contributions of the Spanish and the French. The students wanted a good time and did all that was possible to fulfill their intentions. Various seniors took advantage of different facilities, but everyone enjoyed a terrific holiday. 63 AFFAIRS OF STATE SENIOR CLASS BREAKFAST Armed with smiles, unbrellas, and undampened spirits, the Class of ’76 raided the Livings- ton Holiday Inn on Thanksgiv- ing morning to enjoy Mountain’s annual Senior Class Breakfast. While Seniors feasted on a de- licious pre-game buffet, the room was filled with congenial conversation, friendly laughter, and the music of the player piano. Many of us went and many of us wished we had gone. Three months of worrying, planning, and preparing, ended in one exciting evening. With anxious expecta- tions, 208 couples entered the main ball- room of the Wayne Manor. Every detail of time and place was arranged, but not until the people came and put life into those plans was it truly a success. The Prom was more than a social event—it was visible proof of the spirit of ’76. 64 Desirous of freedom and armed with an unequaled determination, our founding fathers obtained liberty for all.. . Today, we strive for our individuality, another freedom to be secured by those of strong-will and determined mind. Whether Pm right or whether Pm wrong, Whether I find a place in this work! or never belong, 65 I want to live, not merely survive. And I won t give up this dream of life that keeps me alive! 66 Fve gotta be me! Fve gotta be me! What else can I be but what I am? 67 Independence . . . the un- chaining of the soul . . . the struggle between want and ne- cessity . . . the ability to stand up in support of one’s ideals, be- liefs, and desires. Freedom . . . the essential piece in the puzzle of mankind . . . the single most important concept that man may ever com- prehend . . . the right to survive as an individual. Since the first stirrings of life occurred on the earth, all crea- tures have striven for the same ultimate goal — the opportun- ity to exist unobstructed by any- one or anything. Battles have been fought, lives taken, victor- ies and defeats experienced, all in the name of liberty. 68 BETTY FORD SQUEAKY FROMME These battles continue even today. In the fast, complex so- ciety which encompasses our lives, freedom may be the only stabilizing force which remains. It is a state of mind which al- lows one to cope with the con- flicts surrounding him and to en- joy life to its fullest. The spirit of the soul knows no bounds. Armed with our freedom, we may enter the world ahead of us unthreatened and follow the dreams which lie in our hearts. KAREN ANN QUINLAN HENRY KISSINGER 69 That far away prize, a world of success, I it s waiting for me if I heed the call. won't settle down, or settle for less, as long as there 's half a chance that I can have it all! I ll go it alone. That s how it must be. I can t be right for somebody else if I'm not right for me! 72 Tve gotta be me! I ve gotta be me! Could we? 159 NANCY RUSIGNUOLO Here we are again at the .start of the end . . . but there’s always more. ANTHONY SALINARDI TYRONE SANCHEZ JUDY SAPOFF I.earning follows various roads. We note the start but not the end. ALAN SARNER I never think of the future. It comes soon enough. TERRI SARNI There’s so much left to know, and Tm on the road to find out. DAVID J. SC A LERA DONNA A. SCARDILLI Nothing is difficult for one who tries. GARY SCHAIN 160 161 JAMES F. SCHERER Freedom and responsibility are like Sia- mese twins; they die if they are parted. RUSSELL SCHUB Aim for the stars . . . there’s one up there waiting just for you. HARRY SCOFIELD Mountain High: a memorable and re- warding experience. JEFFREY SERKES If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with. STEVEN SCHENKEL DAVE SCHUMAN C’mon you boychild; winner and loser. C’mon you miner for search and delu- sion. Shine! And in the sweetness of friendship, let there be laughter and sharing of pleasure. Kahlil Gibran 162 RICH SETTINERI The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. SUSAN B. SHAFARMAN HOPE M. SHALLIS If you smile at me, I will understand because everybody smiles in the same language. CARMEL W. SHARKEY So sad, so fresh, the days that are no more. DEBBIE SHERMAN Everything has its beauty, but not every- one sees it. 163 LINDA SKARBNIK To dream of the person you’d like to be is to waste the person you are. 164 CAROL SMILLIE KRISTINE SNYDER dship is just a small word; it's those tain people who make it big. MICHAEL C. SOPKO AMY SPECCHIO Music is playing inside my head Over and over and over again My friend, there's no end to the music Ah. summer is over But the music keeps playing And won t let the cold get me down Pictures are forming inside my brain Soon with the colors they’ll rain together and grow Then don t you know, don t you know there 11 be music Ah, it’s not always easy But the music keeps playing And won I let the world get me down Music is playing inside my head Carole King 165 ELAINE PA TRICIA SPINA It is comforting to know that whatever happens, my friends will always under- stand. DONNA MARIE SPINELLI Shining hours, carefree days and happi- ness always; I may never pass this way again. BEN L. SPINELLI The unfairness of the world is over- whelming, but we must persevere. SCOTT STATHIS There's still a little magic in the air . . . Til weave my spell. HEIDI STERN Hey tomorrow, where are you goin ; do you have some room for me? LISA STERN Soon, oh soon, the light, ours to shape, all time, ours the right. 166 JAY STRAUSS Don’t take life too seriously. LIZ STOLLER And in the end remember it’s with you. You have to live. DAVID STRAUSS don’t believe in an afterlife, although I am bringing a change of underwear. CHRISTOPHER STRONCZAK SIMON TAYLOR Faith is what makes you feel the comfort All things must pass. of the hearth while you’re chopping the wood. ANDREA TERRY MICHELE TESTA Feelings like I’ve never lost you and feelings like Til never have you again. BARBARA TODISCO We have the power to make this the best generation ever — or the last. The life of every mail is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another; and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he hoped to make it. Sir James Matthew Barrie 167 168 JAMES S. UNDERWOOD, JR. DENISE ANN VACCA So quick bright things come to con- fusion. PATTI VAN CAT WEN BE ROE And now we leave . . . each his own separate way. IVe accept what has passed and look to our future. CHRISTINA VASILAS You can say I want to be free . . . I can say someday I will be. PATRICIA WAGNER I am not afraid of tomorrow; for I have seen yesterday, and love today. ROBERT WAGNER A new day will dawn for those who stand long; the forests will echo with laughter. ELAYNE WALDSTEIN Walk in the sunshine; be all those things you're able to be. RICHARD WEBER Any fool can tell the truth, but it re- quires a man of some sense to know how to lie well. 170 PAMELA LYNN WESTON There is no wisdom that can take the place of humanity. NANCY WETTSTEIN Love isn’t love until you give it away. ROBIN WHELAN We have power over ourselves to do and suffer. What, we know not ’till we try. CAROL A. WILLIAMS DARLENE ANN WILLIAMS For everything we take with us, we leave a little something behind. LES WILLIAMS All I feel is all I’ve learned; all I know is all I think. CAROL WILLIAMSON BRUCE J. WISHNIA BARRY WRIGHT LORETTA WUENN FRANCES ZACCARDI Where am I going, and what will I find? LAURAZENTE 172 PETER ZIERING Perseverance is the pathway to success. KATHLEEN ZIRKEL Why take life seriously; you'll never get out of it alive. NATHAN ZISKIND EDWARD DECTER Life is a bowl of cherries; not enough fruit and too many pits. BARBARA SHULMAN See the other for what it is, not what it means to you. FRED SOLOMON 173 When it all comes true Just the way you d planned, It's funny, but the bells don't ring, It's a quiet thing. When you hold the world In your trembling hand, You d think you d hear a choir sing. It's a quiet thing. There are no exploding fireworks. Where's the roaring of the crowds? Maybe it's the strange new atmosphere Way up here among the clouds. But I don't hear the drums, And I don't hear the band, The sounds I'm told such moments bring. Happiness comes in on tiptoe. Well, what do you know— It's a quiet thing, a very quiet thing. Fred Ebb 176 Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect. Every advance into knowledge opens new prospects and produces new incitements to further progress. Samuel Johnson We cannot advance without new experiments in living, but no wise man tries every day what he has proved wrong the day before. James Truslow Adams It is the close observation of little things which is the secret of success in business, in art, in science, and in every pursuit in life. Human knowledge is but an accumulation of small facts, made by successive generations of men—the little bits of knowledge and experience carefully treasured up and growing at length into a mighty pyramid. Samuel Smiles 177 -Jk A prayer to be said when the world has gotten you down and you feel rotten, and you ’re too doggone tired to pray, and you ’re in a big hurry and besides you ’re mad at everybody Help. Take it easy Don t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy We may lose or we may win, But we will never be here again. Eagles many a sun set since i last saw you when we played in our tree hut and planned our lives, you, a teacher-to-be, me, a writer-to-be. now, fifteen autumns later, we meet. you, smelling of lemon cosmetics, dressed in the latest fashion, me, with my faded jeans and turtleneck, you, with three little children that look just like you, me, with my three unpublished manuscripts, you, with your shiny dishwasher and wall to wall carpeting, me, with my paper plates . . . but you living your life through others and me living my own life with others. we parted with tears, each looking at the other with pity. knowing that we had very little left in common, we both wished that perhaps there were enough to keep our friendship alive, even if just to meet each other occasionally to see how another segment of the world lives. susan polis schutz 181 SANDRA ALLERTON — Photography Club 4; Prom Committee 3; Marching Band 4; National Honor Society 4; Acumen 2, 3, 4. Where are you going to, do you know? 3 3078 00093819 8 FOR REFERENCE i NOT TO BE TAKEN FROM THE ROOM For Reference Not to be taken from this library
