BREAKING THE SURFACE Competing in the 100 meter breaststroke is Krissy Van Duyne Swimmers Top Columbia It was a year of firsts for the Swim Team. The team had its highest finish ever, placing fourth in the Essex County Champion- ships. For the first time in history, the Mountaineers outswam Co- lumbia High School by a score of 48-24. Of the twenty-seven members of the team, fourteen swimmers attended the Essex County Championships, and ten of those fourteen earned All- County honors. Captain Tracey Lutkins finished second in the 100 yard freestyle competition. A four year member of the squad, Tracey provided a strong back- bone for this 5-7 team. Dimitry Polyakov also had an outstanding season, finishing fourth in the 100 yard freestyle category. Sen- ior Tom McGovern commented, Although the team consisted of mainly underclassmen, a sense of comraderie was felt among all of the swimmers. This year's team consisted of excellent athletes, and with many returning swim- mers, the future looked promis- ing. This was a young team that became stronger as the year progressed. Victories against Columbia, Livingston, and West Essex helped to develop the West Orange swimmers into one of the top four teams in Essex County. 96

Individuals Excell In many sports, the overall suc- cess of the team is measured so- ley by the final record, while other accomplishments are overlooked. However, this was not the case for the wrestling team. Despite their 5-9 record, the team dis- played a sense of committment and dedication which ultimately led to many outstanding individual feats. At the Kearny Holiday Tour- nament, the team placed fourth overall and junior Troy Henderson captured the championship at 160 lbs. Co-captains Rolando Soler and Cullen Church placed second in their individual weight classes. Of the twenty-two teams en- tered in the Essex County Wres- tling Tournament, West Orange finished in eighth place. Rolando Soler wrestled his way to a fourth place finish at the 140 lb. cate- gory. In addition to an impressive showing from senior Paul Caso- laro, who finished with a 1 5-6 re- cord, team standout Rolando Soler earned the distinction of be- ing the first Mountaineer to win a district championship. Sopho- more Mark Montuore received a third place finish in the 103 lb. class of the districts and held the team record for the fastest pin of 18 seconds. Upon finishing the District tour- nament Rolando Soler, Troy Hen- derson, and Mark Montuore went on to represent West Orange in the Region II State Tournament. Although they lost in the first round, their efforts were proudly recognized by Coach Lutkms and the rest of the team. The 87-88 West Orange Wrestling Team will be remembered for its committ- ment to excellence and dedication tot he sport. The success of the program was made possible because of the leadership role played by the seniors. 98
