Al, seeing the child's danger, 3 dropped his papers to pull the boy to safety 5,551 just as the train whizzed hy. As a reward for his courage and presence of mind, the station master offered to teach Edison the science of train telegraphy. When Marshall Lefferts, president of West- ern Union, engaged Edison to improve a stock- ticker, Edison produced his Universal Printer. For this he received, what seemed to him, the enormous sum of forty thousand dollars, which, as a practical joke, the hanli teller gave him in small hills. The Edison Pioneers, Edison's associates of Menlo Park days, dedicated a memorial to Mr. Edison at Menlo Park on May 16, 1925. Mrs. Edison unveiled the granite boulder with the bronze tablet facing the Lincoln Highway. Inscribed are these words, On this site 11876-1882? Thomas Alva Edison began his work of service for the world. The hands of the dreamer, the idealist. the man of imagination- thus an expert on character reading described Edison's long, muscular, hollow-hacked hands.
