A iF REW RD Although Aladdin's lamp and all its con- notates may seem immature to us now that we have passed lzeyond the age of childhood, nevertheless, it has stood throughout the ages as a symbol of the power of magic in the satisfying of man's wildest dreams. It has stood as a symbol signifying the luxurious richness of an oriental palace, the beieweled windows, gem incrusted halls, fooled teak, the soft swishing of golden brocades upon the pargeted walls everything that one could des sire except, perhaps, true happiness. Today, it is a far greater Aladdin, the Wiz- ard of Menlo Park, Thomas Alva Edison, whom we desire to pay tribute to, a man who has opened to mankind the portals to many of the riches of the earth and to true happiness. He has bestowed upon humanity blessings far beyond the fondest dreams of ordinary man. Picture, if you will, an electric lightless, telephoneless, electric powerless, motion-pic- turesless worldg and then only can you realize what Thomas A. Edison has given all mankind. Because Thomas A. Edison, who, with practical- ly no formal schooling, did become the greatest material benefactor in all history and thus inspire us, with every educational facility at our command, to aim higher, to hitch our wagon to a star, we have chosen, as the theme of our l94O West-O'Ranger, Edison, the greater Alf1CldlI'1fH and we hope that in thc years to come the well-thumbed pages of this 1940 Annual will not only inspire us to better living but also recall for us haDDY memories of friendships made and joys experienced dur' ing the three best years of our life, our happy school days in West Orange High. r .
