One encounters the names of people of prominence and eminence, not only in our own community, but in far-away places as well. One sees the faces of young and eager students engaged in activities which sat- isfy their thirst for knowledge, and afford them opportunities for self-expression that lead to suc- cess in life. One is also made acutely aware of a unique feature of night school. For among the young faces there are the faces of many who are not so young, but despite their age they are still young in spirit, eager for knowledge, will- ing to forego the well-earned comforts of home and leisure, and to accept in their stead the ORD hard discipline of regular attendance in classes, and the harder discipline of relentless, system- atic study. There are also the faces of teachers and administrators whose dedicated services have, for more than fifty years, guided the school and inspired the students. lt was one of these browsing expeditions which brought to light the theme of this the 1954 Echo. In 1935, on the occasion of the celebration of the 30th. anniversary of the founding of the Echo, E. W. Wilkinson, a for- mer principal of West Night, ended his message to the students with these words: My experi- ence with night school students prompts me to the conclusion that THE NIGHT BRINGS FORTH THE STARS . Each year the league makes greater strides toward its goal of full participation. Today's league is a far cry from the hit or miss group of years ago. Credit for this great success is due largely to the efforts of Faculty Adviser, Jack Bockholt This year, as in the recent past, the season ended with a head pin tournament: followed by a gala banquet at which prizes and awards were made to all. Next season promises to be better than this. Home of Vest Night Bowllng League ,:i? 5 5- 5 ih . vi mi,Q5I l l 1-UU rv Rlshtz Vern Barnett, V. At first there are people and people. clatter and chatter. wild suggestions. D18 dreams. animated discussions. heated arguments. and perhaps some hurt feelings. Eventually a few sane ideas precipitate from the seething mass, and a little work gets under way. The DPC- spect of work quickly dampens the enthu- siasm of the big dreamers. and they qulckly take fllght. Those who are left move on to figuring out ways Ind means of carrying into effect the plans and ideas that have gradually evolved despite the hubbub. Then things settle down to a grueling routine of cutting. pasting. typing. Check- ing names. planning layouts, preparing comments and copy. selecting titles, con- types. materials. and de- tlme this routine is well strange quiet has settled Those who are still are under the constant approaching deadline date. sldering cover signs. By the established a over Room 114. struggling on pressure of the when All of the thousand and one chores that are necessary ln the production of an annual must be done. B1 now the ranks have thinned to a baker's dozen. and lt becomes evident that. after all. these are the people who have supplied the ideas and have done most of the work from the very be- glnnlng. That was the pattern this year. as it has been in the past. And here are the names of that resolute little band who had the wlll to flnlsh the Job. and to whom the adviser can say: 'well done'. Eugene wilson, Ron wolsefer. Darrell Bear, Ron oiwer. Ron Walters. Shirley Hale. Janet wolfer. Delores Manchester. Frances Dyer. Mary Roberts. Joan Neal. Space does not permit a detailed account of all of the special contributions but a few are particularly noteworthy. In Eugene wilson and Ron wolsefer Heat Night has two alumni whose loyalty and service are exemplary. This is the fourth year ln succession that Eugene has been the chief contributor to the success of the Echo. as assistant editor in 1951. as editor ln 1952. and as alumni adviser in '55 and '54. Ron was assistant editor in 'L2. editor ID '58. and this year has followed in Eugene's footsteps to become an alumni adviser. and an actlve participant in the management of West light activities. Pew students. working for credit. have better attendance records than these two who come night after nlght with no expec- tation of reward other than the satis- faction of service and achievement. If service is a mark of cltlzenshlp. these two are Citizens. First Class. Three other members of the staff. Darrell Bear. Shirley Hale. and Ron olwer. have contributed much thought. time. and effort to the making of this volume. Darrell and Ron took entire responsibility for the Senior paaes. contributina the design. the art work. the layouts. and the titles. Ron's knowledge of printing has also made an important contribution. The beautiful page and section titles are his work. Sh1r1ey's has been the most tedious and time consuming Job of all. settlna up on the Varl-Typer the hundreds of names. small titles. and comments that appear in the book. Learning varl-Typer ls no mean accomplishment. Shirley got a late start last fall, but under the careful instruction of hiss Harris she soon became a competent operator. no small part of Sh1rley's success is due to the fact that she keeps sweet and likeable under the most trying circumstances. The advisory staff has been enlarged this year to include a teacher in charge of sales and advertising, and a teacher in charge of printing and binding. Hr. Kuechenmelster who had charge of Echo sales an '51 and '52 has taken over this post permanently, and with his staff composed of Pat Schneider. Carl Kesson. Daniel Dlttmann, and Russell waters has done an efficient Job of selling. collect- ing. and bookkeeping. Hr. Capozzola whose commercial work has resulted in many con- tacts among printers and binders now has complete charge of prlntlng and binding the Echo. This arrangement will result in many savings and improvements ln the Echo. Bhd much rellef to the editorial adviser. The present staff like their pre- decessors find themselves indebted to Dr. Lambert and his administrative helpers and to the teachers for many helpful sugges- tlons and for making lt possible for staff members to devote extra time to staff assignments. Without these concessions it would be impossible to get the concen- tration of thought. and continuity of effort that give each edition of annual its character and spirit. the we are again indebted to Hr. Charles Wald of Varsity studio for the same high grade of photography he has given us for the past five years. We are especially grateful to hlm for the personal inggregg he takes ln the Echo. and for the many Special trips he makes to west Night affairs.
