1- IFORIEWUIRI Heat Nlght High School ls proud to Join with the thousands of other Ohio organizations in celebrating the 150th anniversary of our state. The schools of Ohio are the key to its greatness. It ls doubtful that any other state west of the Alleghenles can show evi- dence of an equal enthusiasm for edu- cation. The records show that the leaders of the Ohio Company ln Massachusetts employed a teacher before setting out to establish their settlement at Mar- letta. Ahd the early records of the Pioneer settlements of the state a- bound In such statements as. 'Major Tupper kept a school ln the northwest corner blockhouse.' The Public school system of Ohlo came into belng with the passage of the Public School Law of 1821. One of the three men responsible for the passage of this law was Nathan Gull- ford of Cincinnati. In addition to its publlc school system Ohio ls the seat of nearly fifty colleges and unl- versltles. almost half of which were establlshed during the first fifty years of its statehood. The evening schools of Ohio have llkewlse been an important factor in the state's development. The evening schools are neither a recent innova- tion nor a substitute for the regular WE -NIGHT -HIGH 'SC schools. They had their beglnnlng ln 1840 when the school committee of Cin- clnnatl became aware that many young people of the city. flndlng it nec- essary to work during the day, were eager to devote their evening hours to systematic instruction. Teachers were employed IDG a school was opened for this purpose. It is interesting to note that one of the requirements for attendance at this school was that the student provide his own supply of- candles. Older people soon Joined the younger ones and the evenlng school became a distinctly adult lnstltutlon. During the 50's high school subJects were gra- dually adaea to the curriculum. By 19OO the Clnclnnatl evening school had grown to such an extent that separatlon of elementary and high school classes was necessary. It was at this time that west Night High School was established. As a direct descendant of the first evening school ln Ohio and with 53 years of separate existence. servlng not only the people of Cincinnati but drawing its students from as far away as Harrison, Hamilton. Loveland and Batavia, Nest Night has earned the right to claim a share ln the success of the great state of which lt ls a part. 4 INCINNATI, OHIO 1: ' fxflrs I ' , J .. ' 355 ! !
