Y l7fZHXlCLf This year West Night celebrates its 50th Anniversary, From 1900 to 1950 the world has been revealed to us through the stereoscope, the magic lantern, the movie, the radio, and now through television. These are the symbols of our presentation of 50 years of West Night. Included with the pictures of this year's events are flashback pictures of people, activities, and events in the glorious past of a grand old school. It is the earnest hope of the Staff that the present students of West Night will note well the variety and quality of the activities that have flourished in these halls and classrooms. Many more of these activities need to be revived and revitalized if West Night is to fulfill its purpose of providing for every seeker the maximum oppor- tunity for the development of qualities of scholarship, leadership and service. We therefore dedicate this Golden 1950 Anniversary ECE to the revival of the customs, traditions, activities and spirit of West Night High School. Developing from a school with a rather haphazard program of courses West Night has grown into a school of highest quality The State Superintendent of Instruc- tion recognizes it as a school of the first rank. Its many outstanding sons and daughters are distinguished for their well known contributions to our city, state and country. Not only are its standards of the highest, but its offerings are many and varied. Commercial and academic programs are full and well balanced. In addition art, music, speech, journalism, clothing courses and shop courses are designed to round out the students' education and to meet individual interests. As for location, West Night High School first occupied the old First Intenmediate School Building, Baymiller Street, in the West End where Dyer School is now situated. In 1905, it was temporarily housed in the old Hughes High School Build- ing on West Fifth Street, and upon the completion of Dyer School in 1908, it was returned to its original location. For six years it remained there and finally was transferred to its present home, the new Hughes Building in Clifton Heights.A.bronze tablet, presented by the class of 1914, com emorates this event. h., ,H - f WEST NIGHT HIGH SIIHIIIIL ' IJINIIIIIIIATI, IIHIU 2 E. As a rule empl ers hesitate to hire a person who ha not been able to 'get through' high school. In a past generation a high school diploma was a distinction. N it is a necessity. The parents of our resent high school generation may have eceived a unit of credit for 64 house n class as compared with our present 20 hours. This increase in time, how- ver, does not necessarily imply a pro- ortionate increase in the difficulty of he work done. More difficult courses ere taken in the past than at the pre- ent. In fairness it should be said, V owever, that the modern tendency is to ard the practical side, particularly hose subjects that have an apparent and mmediate application. Reber sets Friars, Home of West Night Bowling League Perhaps the most outstanding organiza- tions to be revived with success was the West Night Bowling League. With the leadership of Secretary Lee Hale and Advisor Omer Renfrew the league carried through a full schedule of games for a six-team league. To the genial Frank Lintz of Friars' Lanes and faithful James Butler, keeper of vital statistics, goes a real vote of thanksvfor a job well done. May thirteenth marked a high point in club activities when a bowling ban- quet was held at the Williams YMCA. Thirty-four bowlers and guests were in attendance as Larry Mueller re- ceived the trophy for the league's high average. Bill Horstman was awarded the high game trophyg while Jane Stone received the high aver- age trophy for the girls. TheHawks were the winners of the team cham- pionship medals. A firm foundation for a l95l League has been laid. Plans were already under way by the close of the 1950 Bowling Banquet for the 1951 season. Not only did they set themselves the task of producing the VOICE as the week to week reporter of events as did the staffs of VOICEand ECHO founder J.David Jacobs lpictured belowl, followed by thesum ing-up ECHO, they set for themselves the creation of schools events. During the was West Night activities dipped and disappeared to a large and frightening extent. With a five-point platform the staff went into action. A bowling league, a dance club, a photo club, and a gym club were formed. A Talent Show was produced successfully,fdllow- ed by a second show. Six dances in all were held. Alumni were contacted and joined in certain activities. A class in Journalis and one in Speech and Dramatics were successfully initiated and carried through. This causes them to look toward night school for assistance in their educational progress. It is not easy, however, to spend four or five nights a week in s stuffy class room when one could be out with the 'gang' at a party or perhaps a show and enjoying himsel to the fullest extent. ' The West Night of yester-year had the solution to the dry studying and grind night after night by giving the students an opportunity to make new friends and have social gatherings within their schodh These activities were in full swing prior to the Second World War. The war took most of the young men, curtailing these activities, even bringing them to a complete standstill in certain cases. It has been the constant effort of the senior class officers of the years following the war to give the students of West Night an opportunity to fonn their 'new gang' and to meet new friends, have good times within the school just as they had in the early years. -u We feel that we have given our very best and hope these efforts will not be wasted, but will be con- tinued by senior class officers in the future, for we in receiving our education at West Night feel e great tie to the school and we want that tie to become a bond with the school, the classes, and with the alu ni. Our new Alumni Association has grown in the past few years. These active members have pledged their all to reactivate such social activities like those of years gona by. With such dynamic school spirit passed from year to year by the senior class officers and graduatl the students of West Night High School will again see their alma mater in the limelight of night school education and social life among themselves.
