Our theme, therefore, symbolizes the journey of the Forty-niners of yesterday and West Night's Forty-niners of today. xl oth QW' X it 1 -11 F 7 - N Q52 x !! Murphy STAFF TIME ln producing the 1948-49 Voice and Echo it was found that faithful workers were as few and far between but as valuable and useful when found as were the gold nuggets to last century's Forty-niners in California. To produce a regular school newspaper in night school is not simple. Time, experience, continuity of staff, number and types of workers needed make regular and consistent production of a night school paper extremely difficult. We have been fortunate this year in the quality of the workers who have succeeded one another in the various important positions during the two terms of night school. Of the fall and winter staff B. Grabencamp, Allendorf, Gerber, J. Gilbert, and L. Oliver did excellent work. Of the present staff, old standbys V. Harrington, G. Cassini lonce Calhounl, R. Cassini, C. Willeford, E. Thomas, M. Franklin, Stocker fproduction manl and our spring term leaders, Editor Walker, Ass't. Editor White, M. Schroot, Humbert, Grotlisch, D. Tusch, Schneider, and Cappa have given West Night a paper of increasingly finer quality. Production of the night school annual is fraught with the same difficulties and obstacles that harass the night school news- paper staff. The most serious of these problems is to find people with the special talents required who can afford to devote the necessary time to staff work. With his regular daytime job and two to five nights of classroom work to keep abreast of, every lContinued on last pagel Row 3: T. Humbert, J. Ritter, C. Kennet, J. Oliverio, G. Adams, A. A great deal of credit and appreciation is due those who have devoted many hours of their time and energy to the production of this book. Appreciation is due first of all to Mr. Renfrow who is serving his first year as advisor to the Voice Staff. In addition to giving West Night the best newspaper it has has had for several years he has promoted the dances and other activities which have enlivened the school year and afforded much of the material that composes this issue of the Echo. And finally his artistic talent is responsible for the ideas and arrangements of many of the pages of this book. Geneva Hickman whose clever and artistic drawings depict the theme of this book has, through many hours of painstaking work, adequately earned her title of Editor. As every West-Nighter knows, Carol Willelord has in like manner earned her title of Business Manager by her unceasing drive to obtain Voice and Echo subscriptions and to make those necessary but painful collections. Credit goes to Tom Pigneguy for the informal pictures that record the typical activities that take place in and about West Night. ln addition to these specialized jobs there are many unspectacular tasks that require time and painstaking care such as the management of group picture taking, identifying every person whose picture appears in the book, checking and re-checking the spelling of names, arranging, typing, etc. Credit for managing these details is due the following: Bob Cassini, Esther Thomas, Alvera Fluegeman, Helen Fleming, Joe Stocker, Walter Bergen, Velma Herrington, Hazel Heubach, Mildred Espelage, Ann Walker, Roger Brill. For an expert job of laying out and pasting up copy for this book credit goes to Mr. Moore and several members of his mechanical drawing class. As soon as the material for a page was collected and the arrangement decided upon, it was whisked away to Room 2 where Lowel Brookbank and Yoshio Kamikawa went to work with T-square, dividers, scissors and paper cement. Presently back came the page ready for the printer. As most West-Nighters know the subscription price paid for the Echo does not nearly cover its cost. The balance must be paid from funds raised by other means chief of which are the tax stamp contests conducted by Miss Sudbrink and the members of her classes who have collected, sorted, and counted nearly fifteen thousand dollars worth of stamps which have a cash value of over four hundred dollars. ,Thanks are due also to all of the teachers and students who have so generously cooperated in these contests. The staff wishes also to acknowledge with appreciation the kind interest and helpful cooperation given us by the following companies and their employees: Varsity Studio. l. . .Senior portraits, class groups, dinner dance, Commencement Barth Photo Service ..................................
