CDUJUD Goof: Today the thought uppermost in the minds of all Americans is Victory. After Victory we think of Peace and the Magnificent America we can have if we will. In years past other nations have experienced Victory and have memorialized it in various ways. We have in our lower hall here at West Night a copy of such a memorial and it is around this we have built the theme of this year's Echo. First let us look into the story of the original Winged Vic- tory of Samothrace. In the year 506 B.C. the Greeks won a naval victory. Those Greeks living on a little island in the Aegean Sea decided to memorialize the victory. They had a statue erected of the goddess of Victory on their little island of Samothrace. They must have enjoyed the beautiful statue as much as we enjoy what is left of it, because they had it copied on the coins they used.

If it weren't for these coins we would not know today how she looked originally, because the statue had been broken and lost during the two thousand years after it was erected. It was not until recently that what remained of the statue was discovered. It was taken from the little island in the Aegean to the Louvre at Paris where it has remained unless it has since been carted off to Originally the goddess stood a trumpet to her lips with hand she held a cross shaped The copy which stands in our several other of the Greek halls. They were placed in Berlin. on the prow of a ship. She held her right hand and in her left trophy. front hall was bought along with works of art to be found in the the present building the year it opened. The principal of Hughes at that time was Mr. E. W. Coy who had been principal in the old building for over thir- ty years and remained principal here only a few years. It was as a result of his effort and his interest in Greek art that we have the beautiful statue today. An interesting story is told of the janitor who unpacked the various boxes the statue was shipped in. After he had it all unpacked he went thru the empty boxes several times looking for the head.
