This being the last game of the sea- son, the defeat was a blow to the Tornadoes, especially to the seniors who will never again play for West Muskingum. Nevertheless, they have nothing to be ashamed of because all season they have been successful not only in their determined efforts, but al- so in gaining ther enthusiastic support of many fans. The Tornadoes played a strong game and promised a victory until John Glenn made a surprise attack in the last few seconds to defeat us 25-12. With less than one minute to go, the score was U.G.J 18 -fW.M.J12. Although West was working quickly to score, the Muskies threw a fast touchdown to bring the Tornadoes to a 2-8 season. During the halftime, the two foes were united for twelve minutes. The John Glenn and West Muskingum march- ing bands combined forces to present an unforgettable show that made the fans wait until afterwards to get their hot chocolate and coffee. 57 New Coach Revives 0Id Spiril A group of people, not often thought of as hard -working, is the coaching staff. Just as the team mem- bers do, these dedicated men make many sacrifices for the betterment of the team, including time spent away from a family and a warm home, as well as extra time spent on classwork, Among the duties of head coach is the difficult job of instilling spirit and enthusiasm into the team members - a task at which l-lead Coach Fugate has been very successful. Coach Todd Fugate qfar rightj studies the field for possible plays. Assistant Coach Ted Marlatt qrightj crouches on the press box, his mind intent on the game. fbelow leftj Assistant Coach George Marquis runs the team through pregame drills, qbelow rightj New Managers, left to right, are Larry Hodgson, Tom Agin, and Tim Hartmeyer. y A me g THE 1971 VARSITY GRIDDERS: qrow lj Tim Hartmeyer f1'1'1gI'.j, Brad Brumage, Marc Jesse, John Parker, Jim Fracker, Tom Hosler, Chase Johnson, Jim Hayes, Jeff Smith, Kenny Williams, Randy Hartrneyer, Larry Hodgson fmgnjg grow 25 Tom Agin qrr1gr.J, Dave Forsythe, Randy Kreuter, Mike Huffman, Jody Maxwell, Randy McFerren, Jeff Jones, Roger Tusing, John Wallace, Ron Derry, Randy Tisonyai, Doug Winland, Dennis McDaniel, Mickey McNeish, Assistant Coach Marquisg frow 33 Dave Merker, Terry Sisk, Mike Dennison, Rick Hepler, Jerry Stewart, Bill Leake, Brent Rambo, Mike Feldner, Jim Shaw, Jeff Schlaegel, Ray Peyton, Doug Addis, Tim Dolen, Assistant Coach Marlattg qrow 45 Coach Pugate, Rick Blaney, Dan Kirkendall, Bernie Jones, Greg Smith, Scott Baker, Kevin Coulter, Pat Finnen, Steve Smith, John Sisk, Warren Baughman. - - J l J sitr if The following boys are our graduating seniors Qrow lj John Sisk, John Wallace, Jim Fracker, John Parker, Jim Hayes, Randy Kreuter, Tom Hoslerg grow 25 Randy Hartmeyer, Mickey McNeish, Marc Jesse, Dave Forsythe, Jeff Smith, Q, Brad Brumage, Tim Dolen, Dennis McDaniel, Chase Johnson. Someone said during the season in reference to our team that the dif- ference between success and failure is working hard and hardly working. Al- though by looking at our record one might not think our team is victorious, by this definition our team is truly a success. Observers can see our gridders as a dedicated, energetic team working successfully with a new coach and a rival of the old West M. Spirit. Cross Couniru - Over The River And Through The Woods x ,.4 i The cross-country runner is a dif- ferent kind of person. He is a hard worker who loves to sufferg the pain of cold air in the panting lungs, the ache of tired muscles. He gradually works up to the long race by forcing his muscles to do more than they want to with each practice run. At last, mind and body are prepared for the moment when he must not only meet his challengers, but he must also test the conditioning he has gone through. Hoi Reserves Go All The Wag ZS . iq-g 'L'1 Coach James Zechiel, with a strong dedication for a strong team , gives directions at a critical moment dur- ing a game. Hey, Hey, you. We're the gold and blue. We're hot. You're not. Show you what we got. The power. The power. The power. No cheer could better recount this year's reserve team. The power was there, and they certainly were hot. Their 16-2 record and undisputed first place in the M.V.L. elaborates their striking performance on the court during the season . After losing their outstanding top scorer, Ted Lemmon, to the Varsity tearn, they proceeded to remain un- defeated in the M.V.L. and prove that they were not a one -man team . They were always seen either leading all the way or coming from behind to take a victory, using their height, quickness, skill and coaching to the full advantage. With a magnetic personality, he attracts many admirers, both in season and out of it. During the season, parents, students and faculty members are seen whenever our Mr. Basketball meets with the Mr. Bas- ketball of another school. Out of sea- son, groups of young players are seen oftentimes on home courts, playgrounds, or in the gym, following their leader, trying to learn his ways. Mr. Basketball is a very demanding teacher, requiring the boys to constant- ly run, jump, twist and turn with ex- treme precision. He expects all his players to have coordination, stamina and determination to the highest degree. Only those players who live up to Mr. Basketball's standards ever make it to the spotlight, as was true in this 1971-72 season. However, the young men who made it this year still have worked hard, tasting both victory and defeat as they came along, All Paris Togeiher . . . Co-Captain lim Hayes, the only West player named to the M.V.L. team, works his way past an opponent block- ing his way. What? Did I really forget my tights?! Junior Greg Foltz leaps high and takes aim for the basket . . . Make A Whole Ted Lemmon, a sophomore, moved up from the Reserve team to replace two lost players on the Varsity. Coach Ankrum later realized this was no mistake. He must be willing to play in all kinds of weather. He must remain calm despite extreme pressure that he is under. He must have great powers of concentration because even the slightest mistake can make a dif- ference. A golfer is his own fan, for there are no spectators to give encouragement. His self-determination is his only sup- port, for there is very little public glory. This year's golfers brought in a suc- cessful ll-5 season. Beginning weeks before, expectation slowly starts drifting between students until it rises to a head. The main topics of discussion become descriptions of outfits and guessing of the attendants. Then, at one of the most spirited pep rallies of the year, the selected candidates are announced . Screams of surprise and tears of happiness are released from the newly chosen Royalty. lt is Homecoming. Now, time moves swiftly and soon it is Friday. The big day-very last chance to wrangle an invitation. Student Council members see the ceremony is practiced and the attendants learn to gracefully f?j descend from the top of the' back seat of a car. What coordination! Seniors hustle to get the gym decorated in a few short hours, while trying to remove staples from fingers at the same time. Girls hurry off to get their hair done, then hurry home to redo it themselves. A hectic day leads up to a long-awaited evening. All the work pays off and the court makes a beautiful sight on the field in a well planned and easily carried out ceremony. Debbie Miller is crowned by former Queen Linda King. A hard -working team plays a good game against Crooksville, but their efforts do not pay off as far as winning goes. Despite the 21-6 score, any student could applaud some great hustling. The decorations carry out the theme From Pumpkins to Promises, and lend the usual Fall atmosphere to the gym. The dance starts out with students staring at them or each other. But surprise! - by the end of the evening, almost everyone is dancing. Homecoming is a lot of work, but it is something that will not be forgotten by West Muskingum students and alumni that watch it happen. 7 1971 Homecoming Couri in 'fn . Sw maui gimp Hamm W, ,. ov W! ERCLASSMANg Whatever happened to the Mature Senior? OR: We're no longer dismissed or called first. We're getting edged out of our lounge. No one looks up to us. Sometimes when we act foolishly, we are having fun and getting the youth out of our lives. ERCLASSMANf lf some of the seniors feel they must get the youth out of their lives, shouldn't they think of a better way of doing it than pawing each other in the hall? OR: Let's have some spirited class rivalry and wait for the achieve- ments of being a senior, because you'l1 want the same superiority next year and the years to come. SENIOR: To be a senior was something to be proud of. Now, there is no distinguishing a senior from a freshman except that he may be older than the freshman. UNDERCLASSMAN: Oh well, enjoy be ing a senior, and acting like a freshman. At the start of September, the days seemed to drag along. Suddenly everyone realizes school's out. The smnmer vacation be- gms. The new, inexperienced, staff had a difficult time putting ideas onto paper. Everyone caught on gradually. Day by day, we saw the 1972 Tornado taking shape. At times we had our little U5 fights. Overall, we had a fun time. I think the advisor, Mr. Henderson, deserved more credit than he got. At times his temper flared. I am sure he had his doubts as to the outcome of the book. But he stuck behind us. I'd like to thank the staff for their effort they put forth to make what we think is the greatest yearbook yet. I would also like to express my grati- tude to Bob Murphy, our photographer of 3 years, and A1 Butto, a great repre- sentative, who was always giving advice and lending a helping hand. We hope you, the student body, en- joy the book as much as we, the staff, enjoyed putting it together. Debbie Miller Editor-in-Chief
