This means of course, a continual improvement. Therefore, the Class of '69 is the best that West has ever had. The seniors and administration have worked hard to make this a great year. We feel that we have accomplished much. The up-to-date courses of Psychology, Art, and Music Appreciation have been addedg the school is being evaluated in prepara- tion for joining the prestigious North Central Accredidation Associationsg and our football team, cheered by enthusiastic fans, won the Muskingum Valley League title. It is this school spirit that made senior girls cry at the last football pep assembly and made the boys laugh at them, while wanting to do the same thing. This spirit has bound us to Westg and it is a great feeling. So, we give to the underclass- men this spirit and the challenge and tradition to make each year better than the last. May this book be a reminder to you of this challenge. 1 Foreword Dedication Faculty Seniors Clubs Juniors Activities So phomores Sports Freshmen Advertising Table of Contents 4 1 llts 7 24 46 63 gg 71 E 94 101 130 138 We the staff of the '69 Tornado -wish to show our deep appreciation for his devotion to this and past graduating classes by dedicating this year- book to Mr. Delmar E. Major changes were made in the following areas: Juniors were included on the staff as well as Seniorsg staff assignments were made more specific, the news- paper was placed on a bi-weekly production schedule, and the newspaper was made available to all students. rather than to a select group of subscribers. It was felt that the reorganization would improve the quality of the paper and make it a much better medium of communications. The reorganization appears to have been successful. Students seem to be better informed and have often been heard discussing items which have appeared in the Tornado Times. We hope and believe that the staff for the next school year will continue with the fine work that has been done and will go on to make the Tornado Times the best high school newspaper anywhere. Other activities of the Thes- pians included attendance of The Lion in Winter at Muskingum College and a spring party, By working in the shows, 18 students accumulated enough points to become Thespians. They taught us the basics of good sportsmanship in both winning and losing, though we went down to defeat only twice this year. The cheerleaders spent many hours after school practicing new cheers. As a result we have some of the most up-to-date cheers in the area. During the summer our cheerleaders attend the National Cheerleading Camp to learn new methods and ways to cheer. Mrs. Gwen Moore, advisor, also spends her time trying to better our cheers. She supervises all pep assemblies, and does a fine job. Through her efforts our cheerleaders have been able to buy new summer outfits along with their fall uniforms. ff Q ar, A Atv- ., T 4: i 11 is - , :Tlx 31 r 1 5 - ,v.., ii R M I , d ik. And so begins the transformation from the sounds of the Marching Band to the more refined tones of the Symphony Band, and new Challenges. New music to read and learn that covers a wide range of musical styles and themes. A musical is coming up - My Fair Ladyg contest is approaching fast. Of all the numbers worked on this year, four remain uppermost in our mindsg Bellerophon, the DiSUFiCI B'2 required Dumberg the , the two selected numbers: and Chant and Jubilo, the state required number. West received the only l rating in the county at district contest and went on to receive a II at state contest in Columbus. Shortly after contest, the band had the pleasure of presenting an assembly for the entire student body. The year finished with a 30 minute T.V. Program and the annual Pops Concert, This year's concert theme was Time-out - the students take over. The John Philip Sousa Award winner was Ted Denman. The student conductors and art exhibit proved talents that will keep West the best! VEST V297 MMM sd h ,. Marching Band After a week 's vacation in June, the 1968-69 West Muskingum Band hit the road to success, Practicing twice a week, the band marched to victory in the many parades and festivals held during the summer months. In July, West was invited to compete in the American Legion Convention Parade in Columbus and took fourth place in the two and one half mile procession. As a result, West will participate in the 1969, 4th of July ceremonies in Columbusg and as guests of the American Legion will go to Cleveland for the State Convention and 50th Anniversary celebrations and contests on Iuly 18 and 19th, 1969. In August, the band went to camp to work toward a successful football seasong and successful it was - September - the trip to the Marietta Band-o-Rama proved rewarding as a dress rehearsal for the Zanesville Bonanza of Bands, Out of the 10 bands entered in Class A, West came home with the third place trophy, Marching season rounded out with the trips to Dennison University, Baldwin-Wallace College and the Parade of Champions in Cambridge, West Muskingum High School Majorettes are, from L to R: Kathy Baker, Karen Williams, Pam Schuster Cindy Jones, Cathy Mittchell, and Suellen Perone. Majorettes The 1968-69 West Muskingum High School Majorettes did a fine job of leading their band on to victory in state contests as well as boosting the morale of the football and basketball teams during the respective seasons. One of the year 's genuine highlights was the presentation during the first week in May of My Fair Lady - the truly great musical by Lerner and Lowe. The show was a combined effort with the students of both the instrumental and vocal departments working under the direction of six teachers. Mr. Gibson and Miss Folan directed the vocal and instrumental efforts, respectively, Mrs, Herreman designed the sets and super- vised their detailed painting while Mr. Finley designed the lighting and was in charge of the set construction. The dramat- ic coaching was done by Miss Judy Nehls, a student teacher in speech. Also, Mrs. Atkinson helped coordinate make-up and Mr. Ledfort served as a technical advisor The complexity of scene changes, the size of the cast, and the challenge of the music and staging made My Fair Lady the largest undertaking in the school's history. And, the dedicated efforts of the 130 students involved made it one of the most impressive and satisfying productions this area has seen, Later in the show Doolittle comes to the home of Professor Higgins in search of his daughter or rather her ransom In explaining his plight he leaves Higgins, Pickering and Mrs Pearce completely dumbfounded I don t eat more than the x GR I . . Eliza faces her initial test at the Ascot where she meets Mrs, Hig- gins, Freddy, and peers, As was the case on Broadway, this was one of the most beautiful scenes. Shown here is the 30 piece orchestra that rehearsed diligently in prepara- tion for the four performances Under Miss Folan's direction, the band was one of the show's strong points. 1 A 2 ug' 'C -. 4 i if w W L 7? mm,, , ,... Although their cleats are on the shelves As a team their hearts remain. by Rick Luman This year's football team was the best team in the history of West Muskingum High School. The team accomplished all the goals that a team could possibly accomplish. They had an outstanding record of 10-O and won the M,V, L, Crgwn, In the final poll for the state ratings the team lost out of first place by a matter of a few votes. The team accomplished its goals due to the fine coaching of Coach Steinbrecher. Mr, Steinbrecher promised the team at the end of the 1967 season that in 1968 West would win the M.V. L, and the state championships. The team proved him nearly correct by winning the M,V,L, and finishing 2nd in the state this season.
