Teaching conservation is relatively new and no text book has been chosen but students have been reading about con- servation during the winter from reference books chosen by their instructors. One of the instructors is Chuck Bryant, former Zanesville High School and Ohio State football star. Bryant says the students prefer getting outdoors for the actual conservation work but also asserts that the out- door work creates interest in the book work for many stu- dents. Before winter weather set in, the students had construct- ed half of a log cabin which will be finished this spring. They have constructed nature trails on the wooded hillsides which make up much of the 47 acres owned by the West Muskingum Board of Education. The Class plans to dig up seedlings from the wooded area to stop erosion which has been a problem on the sloped banks of an area graded for building of the school. The classes also are working along the roadway leading to the school to clear brush to make the approach more attractive to visitors. Two flower beds are also being planned. One will be at the base of the West Muskingum High School sign along the edge of Rt. 40. The other will be a gar- den forming the letters W and M in blue and yellow flowers which are the school colors. The students will also learn about grass by seeding the football field. They will also construct part of the track facilities.
