E OUTDOOR CLASSROOM -- Conservation is the sign at the entrance to school property. being studied by WestMuskingum HighSchool Kenny Gus shovels dirt while Jim Urban, students as they build a flower garden around Mike l-loskinson and Alan McLoughlin watch. Teaching conservation is relatively new and no text book has been chosen but students have been reading about con- servation during the winter from reference books chosen by their instructors. One of the instructors is Chuck Bryant, former Zanesville High School and Ohio State football star. Bryant says the students prefer getting outdoors for the actual conservation work but also asserts that the out- door work creates interest in the book work for many stu- dents. Before winter weather set in, the students had construct- ed half of a log cabin which will be finished this spring. They have constructed nature trails on the wooded hillsides which make up much of the 47 acres owned by the West Muskingum Board of Education. The Class plans to dig up seedlings from the wooded area to stop erosion which has been a problem on the sloped banks of an area graded for building of the school. The classes also are working along the roadway leading to the school to clear brush to make the approach more attractive to visitors. Two flower beds are also being planned. One will be at the base of the West Muskingum High School sign along the edge of Rt. 40. The other will be a gar- den forming the letters W and M in blue and yellow flowers which are the school colors. The students will also learn about grass by seeding the football field. They will also construct part of the track facilities. X i x W-ti X Starting the 1964 1965 season the West Muskingum Marching Band had a new squad of majorettes. This squad consisted of Shirley Porter, Susan Hayes Dedi Russi Rhonda Guerin, and Martha The West Muskin- gum Band also had a new drum major for the 1964-1965 season. This young man's name is Jeff Kendall. Pick something cool and delicate, but with a modern flair. You know, some- thing like Blue Hawaii. Surround this with murals emphasizing the theme. For color, add spotlights of a rainbow assort- ment, and sprinkle lightly with a few hundred blue stars, ala Christmas lights. For spice, add one kissing hut. To the glow you have already established, add l5O pineapples, complete with candles, to throw a little light on the subject. At this time, blend in fifteen to twenty thousand tissue flowers, preferably handmade in assorted colors. For a centerpiece, try one small island, and if the mood strikes you, possibly a sailboat, to add taste. To keep the whole affair from drying out, toss in a couple of fountains, maybe with colored water, if you desire. These prepared items, put together with work, anxiety, and even desperation at times, and most of all, pride, can be whipped up in about a day, especially if that is all the time allotted you. Serves several hundred with ease. wwf' l The West Muskingum High School Troupe 2451 of the National Thespian Society held their winter initiation March 15, l965 before the school forum.
