In the center of the Land of the Rebels, now two years old, can be seen a huge castle-no medieval castle of fairy-tale lore, but a modern, streamlined structure fully equipped with facilities for offering wide edu- previous spring, election of representatives completed the organization. West Monroe High School's first stu- dent council was on the job. Everywhere Rebeland's population was working. The Rebel Dispatch staff issued Volume II, Number I. The football team, the band, the Rebelettes, and the cheerleaders began in earnest what they had been practicing in the summer. Senior Rebels, wanting a record of their last year of high school, began to plan the '55 Rebelaire. cational advantages to all its citizens. To refreshed students the new year brought the organization of the Tusquahoma Chapter of the National Honor Society, and-as always-mid-term examinations. Another first was chalked up for Rebeland as the basketball team brought home West Monroe High's first trophy. Suddenly the inhabitants of Rebeland began to succumb to the spell of little hints of green that had struggled through the clay of the campus, the yearly siege of spring fever had begun! In order to prevent an epidemic, all W. M. H. S. forces combined to re- wt vive students with the senior play, conventions, the science fair 5 spring training for the band, the Rebelettes, and the football team, and the onset of the baseball, golf, and track season. Seniors realized how near graduation was, when the annual senior assembly popped up. Then in rapid succession final exams, the vesper service, and the senior trip to New Orleans paved the way to May 24, a crowded auditorium, and graduation. As Rebeland's citizens received their report cards 'cfor keeps, seniors wondered how '54-'55 could be gone already. But even as seniors sighed fa littlej and may- be even cried fa very littlej their thoughts were on the future-jobs, college, adult life. At Pelican State Larry was chosen city clerk and served on the Ways and Means com- mittee of the Nationalist Party, Dennis was elected state senator, and Bill Seymour was chosen chief of police. An imaginary state government, Pelican Boys' State enables its citizens to learn by par- ticipation, how the real state government works. Elected by the faculty, the boys were chosen on the basis of leadership, scholastic ability, and character. The West Monroe Kiwanis Club sponsored Dennis Fields, West Monroe Lions Club, Bill Seymour, and Isadora Liebreich Lodge of B'nai B'rith, Larry Alexander. KTED Janice Frazier, Melba Harris. Barker, as- sisted by Coaches Dan McClure, Jeff Hennessy and Bobby Wilson, rolled to a halt this year with two wins, ten defeats and one tie. Though outweighed and inexperienced, the Rebels al- ways fought hard and lost several games by close scores. They first tasted victory by defeating Mari- on, in Lake Charles, in a hard fought battle. Then West Monroe battled the Pineville Rebels to a 13-13 deadlock the next week. Closing out the season, the Rebels downed the Mangham Dragons here in a home game. Joe Adcock, of the Milwaukee Braves, was the guest speaker at the second annual W. M. H. S. Athletic Banquet. He spoke on his ex- periences as a professional ball player. The ban- quet, sponsored by the Quarterback Club, honored players of all sports. Page 106 's ,x 'Y ix, W 'Wei' Qm Rebelandls first homecoming was celebrated by the crowning of Queen JoAnn McGough in an assembly in the auditorium on Friday, November 5. The Lettermen's Club chose the queen and her court of ten maids to reign over this first homecoming ceremony. Ruler of Rebeland, King Howard Barker, according to a fairy tale related to the assembled students by Miss Ann Thompson, was seeking a successor to his throne. His ten sons, seniors and last-year men, each escorted a princess to the kingls court. A queen was to be chosen from this group. Prince Robert Harris was named the lucky son, for King Barker abdicated his throne and crowned Jo Ann McGough as West Monroe High's first homecoming queen. Princess Gay Monroe was chosen maid of honor. Following this ceremony, the queen, her court, and their escorts rode through the Twin Cities in a colorful parade with the band, Rebelettes, and club floats following. Quarterback Club President C. Watson crowned the queen for the second time on the field before the game between the Rebels and the Fair Park Indians. After the game a dance in the gym ended the homecoming festivities.
