This first year at the new school has seen not only the people connected directly with the school, but proud townspeople as well, display gratifying interest in W. M. H. It has seen civic pride grow as a result of new activities for the young people of West Monroe. Businessmen, parents, faculty, and students have backed WV. M. H. wholeheartedly the entire year. In sports, recreation, activities, and study program, cooperation from these peo- ple has made '53-'54 a success. The students and faculty have used the modern facilities provided in a spacious, up-to-date building to create a well-rounded program in every phase of school life. On the following pages are pictures of life at W. M. H. S., compiled in an effort to show not only the people that have played a part in the establishment of our school, but also the organizations, activities and attainments that have made the year memorable. The Rebel- aire hopes to reflect the spirit of W. M. H. in its first year. CLASSES ACTIVITIES FEATURES ATHLETICS ORGANIZATICNS Q53 uh MMM Wa- 4. s Q E .Wwe 54- is :F I 0 'KNOW let me tell you. When she says this favorite phrase of hers, one knows it will be something' worth hearing. It may be plans for the senior trip or an explanation to a history question, but, at any rate, when this cap- able orator speaks, many heads turn attentively, careful not to miss a word. She loves and is loved by her students, whom she eases through the in- tricacies of American history, and the seniors, whom she wisely counsels as class sponsor. Also this zealous supporter of school activities spurs her students along the trail of good sportsmanship by being' a good sport herself. The sound of her spry little steps as she hurries along the halls in a tireless effort to promote senior projects will ring forever in the ears of members of the class of 1954. For these reasons, the first Rebelaire of West Monroe High School is fondly dedicated to Mrs. Helen LeFevre. The line be- tween failure and success is so fine that we are often on the line and do not know it. A little more persistence, and a little more effort 3 and what seemed to be a hopeless failure may turn into glorious success. There is no failure except in no longer trying. There is no defeat ex- cept from within, no really impossible barrier except our own weakness of purpose. Your loyalty to your school, your spirit of cooperation, your sincerity in your work, your respect and consideration of your fellows express your phil- osophy of life, whether you be genius or otherwise. It is my keen desire that all our efforts may contribute to a better and more satisfying living for all. Each of us shall cherish this, the first Rebelaire, as long as we live. From time to time we shall thumb the pages, reminiscing over events we hold dear. S incerely, P. B. MANGUM. Page 8 XQ mcufagum KPRINCIPAL wa SCHOOL BOARD STAFF fatcd Mrs. Effie- W. Band, under the direction of Solon King, ranked among the school's most active organizations, its functions varying from loyal support of the football team to formal concerts in the audi- torium. During the fall, the band played at all Rebel football games, presenting half-time shows in co-op- eration with the Rebelettes. Marching' in the Foot- ball Festival, Rodeo, and Armistice Day parades, as well as supplying music for assemblies, pep meetings and bonfires were also amonv' its functions. D The band's winter season was climaxed in De- cember by a Christmas Concert in the auditorium. A trip to New Orleans to tour the city and participate in the Mardi Gras Parade on March 2 was a big event of the band's first season. The band has been invited to return next year to the celebra- tion, and tentative plans are to make the trip an annual event. At the Ruston Music Festival, the W. M. H. Band rated superior in class C, the division for all first-year bands, A spring concert and a short tour to nearby schools completed the band's list of activities for its first year. Page 71 Presentation of the Christmas Concert on December 16 and the Spring Concert on April 27 in the school auditorium were the outstanding events of the W. M. H. S. Choir, directed by Mrs. Juanita Kilpatrick. Both programs featured scenery appropriate to the music. The Choir sang at the Easter Sunrise Service in Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe and also at the dedication service of W. M. H. S. Participating in assembly programs at Delhi High School, Ruston High School, and Winnsboro High School, pre- senting a choral program over television station KNOE, singing at the First Baptist Church, and performing' for the Children's Workshop at Northeast Louisiana State College were more ac- tivities of the Choir. The year's work was concluded by singing at the vesper services of the graduating class and at commence- ment exercises. Losing many games by ciose scores against the state's toughest competition, the hard-fighting, out-weighed team managed to win two of their last three games. As the season progressed with West Monroe tak- ing its defeats in stride, the Rebels came through with the first victory of the school's history in a thrilling upset over the Winnfield Tigers. Pave 95 FRE H N FOOTB LL JEFF HENNESSX' Coach The Freshman Football Team made one of the best rec- ords compiled by a Rebel squad this year, as they won four games of their eight-game schedule. Their opening' game with Neville was the first of three losses suffered by the freshmen during their entire season. Victories over Ruston, Columbia, and Ouachita accounted for the wins in the junior-varsity teamls schedule. In the latter part of their season, the fresh- men, in a thrillingly hard-fought contest, edged past the O. P. H. S. freshmen by a score of 8 to 7. For next year, games have been scheduled with Neville, Jonesboro, and Bastrop. Many of this year's lettermen are expected to return next year to fill their old positions.
