Wrestling As wrestling stacked up, WM had a runner-up district team which qualified all but one mem- ber for State. The result was two district champs and one state champ. The grapplers finished the season 6-5-2, record- ing the first winning season since 1968 when the Big Blue Machine took District. The matmen were coached by Mr. Tony Gallegos, who was once a Mustang student. In district competition WM finished 2nd coming out of the tourney behind well-balanced AHS, only losing by six points. AHS went on to take State. WM's state champ this year was Marty Garcia ' who had been wrestling varsity since his sopho- more year. Marty wrestled in the 105 lb. ,divi- sion and only lost one match the whole year. B-team was a winning team also being unde- feated in district. Freshmen learned from the B- Team as they completed the season 3-3. . 1. An unidentified B-Teamer trys to overpower his opponent in one of the wrestling matches this past year. 2. Grappler Fred Sanchez prepares to over-turn his foe during the state tourney. 3. Senior matman Marty Garcia finishes off Rio Grande's Rudy Archuleta for the state championship. He was the only Mustang state champ. 4. Wrestler Stanley Teal gives it all he has against his opponent in the state mat tourney, 5. Junior Jimmy Gallegos attempts to turn over his foe during the state tilt. 6. Mustang Mike Otero tries for an escape to re-plan his strategy. 7.
