Basket- ball West Mesa's Mighty Mustangs finished with a 7-17 season, including post-season games. They gained a pocketful of experience. Coach Fred Romero's Blue Brigade did not fulfil his dreams of becoming District 1AAAA champs but most of this can be largely attributed to Lady Luck be- cause most of the regular season players were plagued by injuries or had to quit the team. Coach Romero finished the season with many sopho- mores on his Varsity Team, two seniors and a few juniors. As the season came to an end, we started winning a few games, noted Coach Romero. lf this had hap- pened sooner, we would have had a fine team, he continued. Certain conclusions can be drawn from glancing at B-Team statistics. Coach Louis Yannoni got it to- gether early and kept a strong ball club. With an up- set over the gigantic Manzano Monarchs, WM knew they had a good enough team to play and maintain any team. This they did by losing only six games the entire year.. The best B-Team ever dressed out for the Mustangs was the 1973-74 squad. As C-Team stacked up, led by Coach Jerry Snider, they were probably the best all-around good team the city had with a record of 15-5 and a 2nd place spot in the city. Coach Snider worked his kids as a team and that's what brought in victories. The Freshman Team had a good season, tying for 3rd in the city with Polk and losing only four games during the season. Coach Pete Pino led his team to victory and stressed the point that a winning attitude is a necessity. 1. Sophomore Ronnie Lowe 1225 goes up with the intent of blocking a Los Alamos player's off-balance lay up. 2. Junior Cager, Greg Ellis jumps high near the rim to pull down a tough rebound. 3. Against Albuquerque High, announcer Pat Elwell pauses during the course of the game. Wm lost, 53-38. 4. The only two seniors to play basketball for WM this year are Kurt Pasnewski and Charles Pettit. Here Kurt holds Chuck's sprained ankle he sustained during the AHS endeavor.
