Physical Education Department Team sports, individual fitness, special courses, health comprise physical education curriculum In West Mesa physical education, each girl is given the opportunity to par- ticipate in activities and learn skills necessary to enjoy more fully leisure time both in school and in adult life. While 'in Physical Education emphasis is placed on a general conditioning program. Special emphasis is placed upon fundamentals for team sports. A special Girl's P.E. class is offered to senior girls with above average grades and a teacher recommendation. This class left campus for activities which include swimming, tennis, and bowling. Enrollment in Boys Physical Edu- cation reached a total of 1065 students. The program was divided into four areasg health, team sports, individual sports and physical fitness. Sports such as basketball, track, tennis, gym- nastics, flag football, golf, tumbling and health were included in these areas. Boys are grouped into these areas ac- cording to their pretesting in fitness at the beginning of the year. All Freshmen boys are required to take one semester of health. Karate-the art of personal defense- is being practiced in PE III by Debbie Warwick and Nancy Shope, juniors. -42

Industrial Arts An aluminum casting on the bandsaw is worked on by John Truden, as Mark Howett and Eugene Flores look on. anual skills have major role in World society Checking the float level of a carburetor for Power Mechanics, are Jeff Gurule and David Jaramillo. Connecting a transmission to an engine in Power Mechanics are Boney Miera and Joe Cruz. In our industrialized society, manual skills still play a major role. Metals I and II were offered to in- terested students this year. The Metals II classes worked on more difficult projects while Metals I concentrated on machine shop functions. Drafting included free-handed draw- ing and geometric construction. The principals and effects of electricity gave students practical knowledge that they applied later in repairing small appliances. In Woodworking boys designed and constructed their own project. Learning all about engines was the objective of Power Mechanics. Academics 41

RGTC activated in fall assembl Junior Naval Reserve Officers Train- ing Corps, activated this year, helped prepare cadets for military duty while teaching leadership. The boys spent three days a week en- gaged in regular classroom activities and two days of military training. Improving the quality of citizenship is the main objective of NJ ROTC. Donating S660 to the Kidney Founda- tion, S300 to the Hearing and Speech Center, and helping in the Toys for Tots drive were some functions of the group this year. The two main activities were the Mil- itary Ball and a field trip April 5-9 to San Diego. In the future, Commander Orval Hughes would like to see a Girls' aux- iliary in addition to the regular pro- gram. Presenting a plague to Princi- pal Evans during activation cere- monies of JNROTC is Rear- Admiral Robert MacPherson. Academics 43
