Music, Art Individual fulfills artistic Directing the orchestra in preparation for an evening concert is Miss Carol Mignot. Under the direction of Mrs. Berlene Casselberry, the Chorus performs for the students during Homecom- ing Assembly. 40 Academics needs in fine arts The Fine Arts Department included classes in chorus, orchestra, band, art, and crafts designed to fill basic human needs. According to Mr. Knight, de- partment head, with increased leisure time the individual has more op- portunity for fulfilling his artistic needs. An innovation in the music depart- ment was a ninth grade chorus class in which an introduction to music read- ing exercises was featured. The orchestra performed in the Dis- trict VII Music Festival in addition to regularly scheduled concerts. Many different types of music were presented by all bands to provide more variety in their performances. A series of noon concerts was initiated this year by the Stage Band. Because of high student interest in popular music, a second stage band, which practiced after school, was begun. Through the use of colorful movies and slides, as well as practice in paint- ing and drawing, students studied some of the more modern schools of art. Added this year was a project in Psychedelic Poster Design Illustr- ation. In addition to beginning and advanced art, a Commercial Art class stressed the basic structures used in art in the business world. In crafts class the acquisition of two additional clay closets for the storage of ceramic work in progress reduced the incidence of accidental breakage. A more highly structured course that gave students a broader experience than was previously available was stressed.
