Teachers hold educational positions in their local, state organizations Many teachers exhibit a strong sense of professionalism toward their edu- cational commitment by voluntarily putting in many hours of work with various educational organizations. Mr. Jim Brownlee, who teaches shop, is vice-president of the Albuquerque Industiral Arts Education Associa- tion. Serving as a delegate to the New Mexico Classroom Teachers Asso- ciation Convention is Mr. Jim Souter, history teacher. He also serves as a building representative from West Mesa to Albuquerque Classroom Teachers Association. Belonging to the National Council of Teachers Mathematics Association and the local Albuquerque chapter is Mrs. Linda Taylor. Mr. John Simons busies himself by being a member of the Albuquerque Teachers' Federation. finds Mrs. Polly Holbrook in the position of vice-president of the Girls Southwest New Mexico Activities Association. Mr. Orval Hughes, Commander of the school NJROTC, is very active in thethe U.S. Navy. Many teachers are involved in the Albuquerque Classroom Teachers Association, an organization involv- ing Albuquerque teachers which speaks for them in negotiations with the school board, working to improve the school system. West Mesa has more teachers in this organization than any other school in the system. Busiest of all seems to be Mr. Winston Christian. Mg Mr. Robert Evans, Principal Mr. John Barefoot Mrs. Mildred Faris Mr. Joe Griego Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Attendance Cirriculum and Faculty Discipline The responsibility for West Mesa's growth and leadership falls on Dr. Tom Wiley, Albuquerque Public School superintendent, School Board members and Mr. Robert Evans, principal. Awareness of the needs of the schools and a constant search for information have made Dr. Wiley a successful leader. Serving for the second year as Superintendent, Mr. Wiley pre- viously taught in the Bemalillo County school system and was twice its super- intendent. The Albuquerque Board of Education has several responsibilities, but per- haps its main one is to 'represent the community in setting educational policies that appear to be the best for all concerned. A bond issue ap- proved this year by the board and passed by the voters allotted 3400, 000 to be used for additions and im- provements at West Mesa. Mr. Robert Evans has guided the school during its five years of exis- tence. This year's enrollment at one time reached 3,000 students making West Mesa the largest high school in New Mexico. The freshmen class is the largest with about 900 students, sophomores are next with 800, juniors have about 700, and seniors are last with approximately 600. Mr. John Barefoot, assistant princi- pal, heard many different complaints and excuses during the year, as he was responsible for all buildings and grounds and all non-professional workers, as well as student attendance. Mr. Joe Griego, assistant principal, was in charge of all disciplinary mat- ters. Mrs. Mildred Faris, assistant princi- pal, directed all professional personnel and was in charge of curriculum.
