West Mesa's Duke City Judo-Karate Club, America's oldest public school judo-karate club and a well known Oriental fighting arts club in the Nation, has completed another out- standing year of activity. During the summer of 1970, a group of members traveled throughout Europe seeing the tourist attractions and practicing karate 'gEuropean style? They made personal friends wherever they went, not only for themselves but for West Mesa High, according to their sponsor. The 1970-71 school year saw members competing in tournaments and presenting demonstrations in Las Vegas, Nevada, Los Angeles, Lub- bock, Dallas, and Denver. During this summer they expect to tour Mexico again. Tournaments sponsored by the club brought about even more national recognition than in past years. The Central North American Karate Championshipsn and the National Black Belt Karate Grand Champ- ionshipsi' brought most of the world's top karate competitors, instructors, and administrators to West Mesa, where overflow spectator crowds witnessed karate in its finest form. The clubas founder and coach, Mr. Sam Allred, received more awards of national significance this year, in- cluding the official karate Con- tribution Awardf' Mr. Allred is a 4th degree black belt in karate and a 3rd degree black belt in judo. Members of the club are progressing through karate ranks at normal speed, and it is almost certain that the club will boast its first Black Belt pro- motions by West Mesa students some- time in the 1971-72 school year.
