Competition, tournaments, fun spark Speech Team Attending a speech meeting are tbackj Carolyn Reisdorf, Kathy Hubmer, Gary Klimiowitcz, Carol Rolfe, Pat Elwell, ffrontj Donna Giese, Anita Archibeque, Robert Thompson, and Rick Quezada. Interest and willingness to work are the two main requirements for mem- bership in the National Forensic League. Members gain experience in oral interpretation, extemporaneous speak- ing, debate and oratory. Students need not take a speech class to be a member of the team. The group has participated in many tournaments. Their president, Richard Quezada, won first place in oral in- terpretation at the Highland tour- nament. The team's secretary, Carolyn Reisdorf, took second place for her oratory. Vice-president is Glenn Gar- vin. Two out-of-town trips, one to Los Alamos and one to Trinidad, pro- vided fun as well as competitive ex- perience for the team. - i 4 All smiles, two winners on the speech team along with their sponsor Mrs. Duq- uette, proudly exhibit the trophies won at the Highland Tournament. American Field Service International Scholarship is an open door which leads to understanding and friendship among the peoples of the world. The 1970-71 foreign exchange student, Asim Mehmet Atay, was from An- takya, Turkey, a city near the Medi- terraean Sea. He wants to become an engineer. He has various hobbies such as playing the guitar, collecting stamps and coins and listening to all kinds of music. He lived with the family of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter in Corrales, who had children attending WM this year. A Penny Wednesdaya to raise money for future foreign exchange students was carried on second semester. Seated is Jessica Lopez, secretary treasurerg fleftj Ellen Carpenter, vice-president, Asim Atay, exchange studentg Ann Weidman, historiang and Kathy O' Leary, president. Turkish foreign exchange student attends WM Active members of the club are Carla Graniield, Kathy O'Leary Mr. Bessom, Eva Montoya, Becky Smith, Carol Mason, Nancy Giese, Mary Green, Ellen Carpenter, Asim Atal' and Barbara Love' Yvonne Chavez, and Nancy Love are also active in AFS. 192 Organizations .
